This work will commence on November 1. That the Federal government ls In terested In the soil survey of South Carolina is shown by a letter received by Commissioner Watson from the chief of the bureau of soils, Milton Whitney. The following ls nn ox tract from the letter: "I trust that you will indicate to me from time to time what the de sires of the State Department of Ag riculture for South Carolina aro In the extension and prosecution of soil survey work within the State, since lt ls my desire, as far as possible, to meet the wishes and requirements of the authorities of the State charged with the development of Its agricul tural resources." The solis of the State make a very interesting study. The work of tho soil survey ls based upon the princi ple that there are differences among soils, which directly affect plant growth to such a degree that not all soils are equally suited to the produc tion of all croiiu. Tho soil survey work, therefore, comprises the study of the character of the differences between soils and the effects which those differences produce In the pro duction of farm crops. Senator M. X. Lunney, Senora HIGHAM AND AVANT GUILTY. Murder Trial at Georgetown Itcstilts In Conviction. (News and Courier.) Georgetown, Oct. 22.-Three years and six months within the walls of tho State penitentiary will give G. C. Blgham and W. D. Avant time to pic ture to themselves again and nguiu that September evening when a gun In thc hands of the one sent to her death the young wife of tho other. To the husband will como tho vislou of the beautiful bride, nenr whom he stood and saw killed by his best friend. It Is tho verdict of tho Jury In the case of Blgham and YV. B. Avant that they wero guilty of man slaughter. It ls the sentence of the court that the defendants ..hall bo confined at hard labor In the peniten tiary for three and a half years. Tho jury remained out a little more than two hours. When the jury brought In the ver dict neither Avant nor Blgham show ed any signs of emotion, but later, as they began to realize that they were lound guilty oT tho killing of Mrs. Bighnm, both showed that they were ved. Dr. Dignam completely broke down as he was receiving the sen tence of the court. Sentence by the Judge. "The solicitor worked hard and got all he could out of the case," said Judge Watts. "Tho defendants were represented by able counsel. I have had considerable experience in crimi nal cases, but this ls the most myste rious and unsatisfactory case I ever tried. I would not have been sur prised If the two defendants had been acquitted or If they had been convict ed of murder, but I nm of the opinion that there was no intention on their part to kill Mrs. Blgham. Great reck lessness was shown. The jury prob ably found that in the pursuit of an unlawful act a gun was handled In a grossly careless and negligent man ner. They had a perfect right to find that this was an unintentional kill ing, constituting manslaughter." Judge Watts pointed out that there should bo more care In the handling of puns. "But I do not believe," said his honor, "that this was a malicious killing. You must have been fright ened or rattled. I am going to give you tho benefit of these doubts. The killing was pure recklessness. No doubt you have both suffered already and you will suffer more. In a mo ment of recklessness tho life of a good woman was taken. I know we can't punish the guilty without also punishing the Innocent. Your aged mother will suffer, Dr Blgham. I must say, though, In justice to you both, that there was no mnlice, In my opinion, In the killing. The sen tence of the court is that each of you bo confined at hard labor In the State penitentiary for a period of three years and six months." Story of the Crime. Dr. Bighani and Avant were charg ed with the killing of the young wlfo of Dr. Bigham at Murrell's Inlet, a summer resort on the coaBt not far from Georgetown, an hour after sun. down on September Ith. At the time of Hie tragedy Avant admitted that he had Bred the fatal shot. Mrs. Blgham was walking toward the beach dressed in her bathing suit, with a light overcoat thrown about her, when Avant, a close friend of her husband, fired. She lived only a minute or two after being wounded. The defendants claim that they were sitting together on the steps of a cot tage when a figure came from tho rear of the cottage and disappeared in the gathering darkness. Gun in band they followed lt, calling out to know who lt was and what lt wanted. Receiving no response, Dr. Blgham told Avant to fire, which he did. They rushed to the prostrate figure and discovered that it was Dr. Bigham's wife. She was 2.1 years of age and is said to have been a very handsome woman. Patrick McCarren Dead.
