The Anderson Daily Mall o? yes terday announces that Calhoun Har ris, secretary and assistant treasurci of the Orr Cotton Mills of that city, ii: short in lils accounts to the amount '>r something like $50,000. There is i considerable air of mystery about he whole affair. Mr. Harris ls illi li r arrest, and justly no, although ho protest? thal the apparent shortage is due to clerical errors which he has endeavored for years to lind and cor rect, bul has never been able to do SO, and that he has made false en tries on his ledgers in the hopi- of yoi Unding the discrepancies. We mole from the Mail's reporl : * * * lu another instance a batch . ?f personal checks from a merchant in Ibo city were lound in the vault of iho mill ellice, v. hielt hud iiovor been presented lo the bank for pay? lieut. These checks bore different \ dates, several years old. They had ; I ec II entered on tho books of the mill, ? showing thal thu linn's account with the mill had 1.11 settled, yoi they had never been turned Into the bank itlld collected. J'lw books show that on one occa- ' .-ion Hie mill had loaned Mr. Harris' $3,000. A few weeks, later, it ap- 1 pears this loan had boen repaid. And j Ihe vault was found Mr. Harris's! personal check for $3,000 corres ponding with tho date on the nooks d the payment ol tho loan, and yet this check had never been presented to ib,- bank for payment. In addition to these checks lhere was lound in Hie vault many parcels ?nd packages ol' money, some in old nvclopes, some in old pasteboard j boxes, and some, in coin sac ks, such ! as thc banks use. Sonic of the money ' was in bills, and had lain in the vault ! for yeais. III Lil some ol' il had boc'l ( ?aten and partiv demolished bi rats. 1 Some of the money was in silver, .md ther>> were packages of nickels ' nul coppers. Some of the money j has been counted, but not all of it, I ;>ut tho estimate is that lt will run up to some $('?.000 or $H.00(). Mr. Harris was for years treasurer Of the First Presbyterian church. In the vault wine found a great many j envelopes which the members of the congregation use on Sundays in mak ing their payments to tho church. These envelopes bear the name Of tho contributor and the amount contrlh- j Uted. There were* dozens and dozens of the se envelopes which bed never j been opened, having lu them the money paid by members of the church as far back ns four or five I years ago. And there has been found i at h ast one instance of where checks ?ol' tho mill had boon used in settling Mr. Harris's account at Hie hank as treasurer of the church. The experts of thc* auditing com pany said the accounts were? in worse shape than any they had ever seen. They say lt will take? them perhaps j sov< ral months to get everything .straightened out, as every Item on | th. books will have to bc gone overt and verile il. These circumstances give to the af f-.-.w the color of errors of the head :>.M1 not of tho heart or in other words point to thu unbalancing of Mr. Harris's mind, probably due to long and constant worry and brood ing over errors he has been unable to find and correct. Whether or not this bc a corred 1 solution of the affair, wo are glad! thal Mr. Harris is in tho hands of tho law. When the investigation clems up tH?" maller ho ls in position t ?M be absolved from guilt If he ls In- i t?t>e< lit, and tho law call take its ' ?.ourse i?' he is guilty of having used che money of the mill for which he worked. ". il? >SK SON WILL UK NEXT : - The Tu ga loo Tribune, recen I lj es tablished at Westminster, advanced Ins) week some very good ideas, .among which, however, we (Ind, ac cording to our way of thinking, some very faulty argument. We quote as follows: "lt ls Hmo for tho Christians of , the South lo rise up in their strength I HI id pul down some of Hu* great evils : I our country. Tho boldness of the 1 tevil is becoming greater each day in some respects. We are taught In Romans 16:1-3 that wo aro to help the weak brother- help him over come 'he weakness that has crept opon him. It may be some of us who .will fall next-who can tell? Who knows, brother, but. that it will be your son next? We do not agree with our neighbor who In Thursday's editorial set forth the fact that Mr. Ilollcmnn, who was so unfortunately led into a trap by ?'loso who were stronger than he, "should be made to suffer for his misdoings." Mr. Hoi loman did wrong, violator! tho laws of our country, but he was honest enough to make a clear confession of lt, and loft all he had to make good, as far as lt would go, that which ho had been induced to lift from thc bank. . "Mr. Holloman ls not as much to blame for this act as the ones who Induced him to do the act. The law abiding citizens and Christians of our country ar? also to blame for not having had laws passed to put down such sneaking gambling aa the "buekct shops" have proven years ago to ho. If lt were a gang of negroes shooting craps out in tho suburbs of the town the police would run themselves down to catch one or all ot' them, hut a class of high-toned men come right In town, get a room on the square or main street and tot ?ip a gambling don that is a t' ousand limes more entic ing than the negro crap game. "Il ls sad to think that one of our best men can so unexpectedly be trapped. Hut he was, and hundreds of Christian hcirts are bleeding on account of this devilish "bucket shop"-a place where men can go and put up their money, or the money of somebody else-with tho belief that they can get rich faster that way than to honestly labor for it." That lt ls high time to suppress the "bucket shop" and other forms of gambling, even down to the fes tlve "crap game" of the coon, we are ready to agree with our friend. Hut there aro two sides to every question. H is not only a vlolntlon of law to run a gambling den. bia it is also violation of law to gamble. There is little harm will come from a gambling ?len without gamb lers. Shall we punish those who inn the game and lol thc gamblers go? Metter punish both according to the gravity ol'ile-offense. And the same theory will bold good all alone Hie line from higher (rimes down to minor offenses. "lt may be sonic ol' us who will "fall next." says our friend, and theil asks. "Who (an tell? Who "knows but that it will be your son " next? We do not agree with our .'neighbor, who sets forth the fact that * * * he should be made to "suffer for hi< misdoings." What has' whose son will be next" to do with tho matter? If my son goes wrong, does he deserve more or less censure, or heavier or lighter punishment, than your son. if per chance he commits the same crime, or breaks tho same law? The pun ishment is lixi-d for the offense, and he who violates any of the laws should suffer the pu ll Isl ment fixed for that violation, and wo have no righi to ask "Whose son is lie?" As a matter of fact, the whole country to-day is suffering from having ask ed too long and too often, "Whose son ls he?" "What political Influ ence has he?" "How much is he worth?" What we want is to bo absolutely impartial, and never ques tion whose son is Involved now, or whose son will be next. Nor should an honest confession and the leaving of what property one may have, "to make good as far as it. will go," absolve one from guilt. It can reduce the gravity of an of fense, but lt cannot wipe ?t out. The taking of a given sum of money, for instance, and leaving a smaller sum to replace lt, with a full confession of the fault and a statement of the amount involved, is a bad example Indeed, and if such were recognized as the proper course, w<< would soon be saved the trouble of asking "whose son will be next?" Our sons would be tumbling over other people's sons seeking opportunities to secure largo sums of money. In place of which they might leace "a clear confession" and "all they had to make good, as far as it would go." We have no sympathy for the "high-toned" en of tho bucket shop, to whom our friend alludes, and bul little more for those who patronize them. They all row in the saine boni, and should all be pun ished according to their transgres sions of the law, no matter whose sons thej m;i) he your son or mine, your neighbor's .--on or the son of my neighbor. Neither friendship nor kinship, social position nor financial standing, has anything to do with the maller of having laws and on forcing them. Hew to the lino; Iel the chips fall where they may. "Who knows, brother, bul thal ii will bo your son next?" And il it i?, ici ihc offed follow the cause naturally. There will be no reason to complain. Where will yon spend Saturday, August I ?Ith?
