J. Hesso, who resides near Couneross, was struck by lightning and killed. The mare was valued at $l?r?, and the loss falls heavily on Mrs. Hesso. The animal was in fie pasture at the Hmo she was struck. Two mules belonging to J. R. Burdett, a renter on Mrs. Hesse's place, were also shocked by tho same bolt of lightning, but were only stunned. Recovering from their shock they ran in fright about the pasture, finally running Into a wire fence, where one of the mules was badly cut and the other received slight Injury. Tills was made possible by the recent tearing down of the long ell fronting Main street, which was built on a level some two feet higher than the sidewalk. The building level at that point will be lowered some four feet from the Moor level of the old hotel, making a practically level grade from Cathe rine street to the College street cor ner. - Harry Karie suffered quite a painful accident last Thursday while at work In the Oconee News Office. While lr, the net of taking from the rollers a piece of paper lils hand was caught and the thumb and three fin gers were mashed between the press cylinder and the type. The Mesh was almost entirely mashed from tho thumb, Hi? lingers also being badly crushed. Fortunately no bones were broken. Killed Brother to Save Wife's Life. Charlotte, N. C., July 10.-At Pat atown, Wayne county, Sunday night. James Blvens Instantly killed his brother, David, with a hoe. The slayer surrendered to the authorities at Goldshoro this morning and fol lowing a preliminary examinatton was released on $200 bond for Iiis ap pearance at the August torin of the Court. The tragedy is enshrouded in mystery, nivens stated that ho had heard his wife screaming in his cotton flold and running up wis startled to see that she was hoing Choked to death by his brother. Af ter felling his brother James Weena carried his wife homo, and by vigor ous effort, saved her life. The dead man's wife, a sister- of Mrs. Janies nivens, the only witness to the fratricide, testified at tho hearing that tho killing was justifia ble.
