Solutions of the causes leading up lo the strike are varied. In several instances the men claim that their employers, taking advant age of their recent prolonged Idle ness, are offering them now low wages for their work. The officials .assert that conditions do not warrant higher remuneration at this time. Other Grievances. Other grievances are tho alleged violation of the eight-hour work day, recognition of organized labor, a con troversy over the use of so-called "safety" powder for coal mine blast ing, and better working conditions generally. YORK JURY DISCHARGED Failure to Convict Where Charge HUH Not I ?in in! Cause Of lt?'lea sc. Yorkvllle, July ?4.-Judge Mern minger this morning duinfounded a panel of petit jurors hy dismissing them on the ground that they were unlit for service in ids court. Tile case was one in which the usual count of carrying concealed weapons was tacked on to au Indictment for assault and battery with Intent to kl". Tho testimony showed quito a sorious tight lu which two Russells shot two Robinsons, the bullets be ing Hied from the rear. There was a good deal of conflict in the testi mony as to the merits of the fight, hut no dispute as to the fact that both of Hie Russells had pistols. The jury acquitted the Russells on all counts. That was last night. When court convened this morning Judge Mem 111 Inger had the clerk to call the panel and said to lt In effect that If a jury saw proper to accept a plea of self defense from a n in who had shot an other in the back lt was not within lils province to set the verdict aside, but where men were unable or un willing to be guided by the plain law and evidence in a case of carrying concealed weapons in the face of the fact that there had been no attempt to deny the charge he was unwilling to go on trying cases with such ju rors. Ile therefore Instructed the diembers of the panel to apply to the clerk for their pay and consider themselves discharged from further attendance. Then turning to the dork his honor instructed the draw ing of additional jurors to Hil out the venire. it people with symptoms of kidney or bladder trouble could realize their danger they \ mid without loss ol* time commence taking Foley's Kid ney Remedy. Washington, July IT.-Through going out to Fort Myer repeatedly to "see" the Wright brothers fly in their aeroplane. Senator (?ore. of Oklaho ma, ls fast becoming one of the most enthusiastic aeronauts in Washing ton, yet tho Senator is stone blind. Senator Oore'i: substitute for the eye he lost by a series of accidents dur ing lils youth is Iiis .vile and a kemi sense ol hearing, to both of which bis mind is peculiarly attuned. From them he obtains the same thrill of excitement thal others experience through first-hand perception. ll?' is well-satisfied with second-hand. The presence of Senator and Mrs. <!<>;,> on the Fort Myer drill ground is regarded as an excellent example of the way In which her eyes and bis mind work together. Few men in Washington are affected by the "at mosphere" of an event as the Sena tor. That helps him to comprehend the quiet words of lils wife, as she explains every movement of the avia tors, of the success or failure of the machine in starting, in maintaining itself In the air, and in descending. When all ls concluded. Senator Gore is just as anxious to applaud as any other "spectator." The Oklahoma Senator also is very fond of "watching" a base ball game, and he Is a frequent patron of the American League games here. Senator Gore's wife knows more about base ball than many wives' husbands. Governor Ansel has ordered an election for Rutledge county, to be held August 17th. Ulea.se to Run for Governor. -. Newberry dispatch: While In Lau rens several days ago Cole L. Blease, of this city, was quoted by the Lau rensvllle Herald, In an Interview, as stating that he would be a candidate for Governor In the campaign next summer, with practically the same platform he had last summer. Quer ied further on his views as to Clem son and compulsory education, says the Laurens paper, he said: "Let Clemson alone, and no compulsory educat ion." There will be Others. The Columbia correspondent of the News and Courier, speaking of the prospective candidates for Gov ernor, says: Mr. Blease ls going to run. The By mp toms are that Richard I. Man ning, of Sumter, will be In the race. The probabilities are that Attorney General J. Fraser Lyon will be a can. dldate. The friends of Lieutenant Governor Thoa. G. McLeod, of Bish opvllle, are urging him to run. These four are more or less certain candidates. If the prohibitionists have a candidate lt may be C. C. Featherstone, of Laurens, or lt may be M. L. Smith, of Camden. Then there ls talk of Capt. John G. Rich ards running for the place as a far mer, and some business men think they would like to see Mayor R. G. Rhett, or Charleston, enter polities through the Governor's office. And then thero is always the like lihood of one or two unannounced and unexpected candidates. TkTO really ought to be a candi date on the platform of ft Just and fair tax revision. He may not win tho first shot out of the box, but that ls as certain to be a winning Issue as any that has ever won In this State. ALABAMA SENATOR KILLED. Tragedy wan Doe to Effort to Get Pardon for Man-Klller. Montgomery, Ala.. July 15.-State Senator Oscar O. Bayles was last af ternoon shot and killed hy David K. Smith, at Monroevlll?, their home, as a result of Bayles's efforts to secure a pardon for Isaac and Jesse Shirley, who are serving terms for the killing of Jim Smith, a brother of the man who did the shooting yesterday. Bay les made sensational remarks to Smith while the hearing before tho pardon board was on, and he plainly showed his irritation at tho time. A phono message from Monroeville says that Smith and Bayles returned to their homes yesterday, Smith at noon and Bayles about 5 o'clock. Shortly after they met on the steps of the drug store, and after a few words, which could not be heard. Bayles slapped Smith down, at the same tim,? drawing his pistol. Smith came up witli his pistol out, and both began shooting. After three shot?. Bayles ran Into a doctor's olllce, and Smith into a drug store nearby. An open door gave each a sight of the other, a.id each took a fourth shot through the aperture. Bayles than fell to the floor with two bullet holes in his bowels, and died within a short time. Smith, who was not hit. was sent to Jail, where extra guard was kept over him all night. However, the people seem to take it that Smith was justified. Smith ls a brother of James Smith, for the killing of whom Jesse and Isaac Shirley are serving terms in tin? penitentiary. The Shirleys were convicted on Hie testimony of their sister, wife of the man they killed. Recent efforts to secure pardon for the Shirleys have been blocked by Smith and his sister-in-law, and bo ause of sensational questioning by Bayles, who was attorney for the Shirleys, Smith grew erv angry, and Mrs. Smith was pul > great embar assment.
