We are glad thal at last Walhalla ladies aro to take up civic Improve ment work lu earnest. Then- ls a wide Meld here for a live organiza tion, and we are going to have an organization of that kind. It will he organized next Saturday after noon at Pitchford's Hall, the hour set for the meeting of ladles being "> o'clock. We urge every lady inter ested lu the welfare of the town to attend this first meeting, join the association and assist in the work that the organization will undertake. All that ls needed is workers. Wal halla is so situated ;t> to he peculiar ly susceptible to improvement at Hie hand of man. Hy nature beauti fully situated and full of natural advantages, the town needs but the live, active interest of her citizens to make lt one of the prettiest towns In South Carolina; and this move ment started by our ladies is just what ls needed and has been needed for >ears. There I? a work for tim women to do. and there ts a work for the men to do. Let these women plan, devise and suggest things beau tiful and things beautifying and le' the men stand hy them and aid then financially and otherwise in carrying out those plans If we work to gether we will be surprised how much, even during the remainder of this summer and fall, can be accom plished for Walhalla's good. There is no better place to live than rieht here in Walhalla We have a healthful and a health-giving r?tmate; we have business going on all about us. and room for more; we have about 2.SOO citizens, and we ought to have 2.500 more: we have a splendid town foi a health resort, and ne can have people here summer and winter for health and pleasure i: wo nant thom and let their, know that we want them Rut we have got t > get to work if wo expect to do things. We have tried lons enough the plan of "waiting for something to turn up " If we con Hr.tie to do this we will each be doomed to disappointment in the end. We have got to do something ami nuit "waiting." Walhalla has grown and prospered in spite of the indifference of our peoph . Occasionally we get out and do something for ourselves, b -t as a rule we have simply stood idl> hy and waited. Had we but worked -n erg? ti ally these years past we w >uld ha\? a far better and 'urger town than we have Let os all get -o gether ami end this -period o: leth argy. Let us a'.l work with tie one object in view-the bettering of Walhallr and Coonee. Never lose an oppottunit> t> talk tor your town and >our county. Roth are worthy of praise, and we owe it to our town, our . ninty and ourselves to do our LOM I.. \ tor Walhalla; you will - on find that it costs no more to . a good tiing th..ii ? doe.-? to gm ni .:. Think of it -stranded in a public road in Oconee in an automobile and "its frame burled in the mud." lt ls no justification to Oconee for her bad roads that tbe following appear? ed in tin same connection: The middle picture ls of the mud pond that the Olds tore Its way through, on the road just north of Keldsvllle. N". C. Here was a drop of one foot from solid road Into two feet or more of liquid mud. The fact thal others have as bad or even worse roads than we have does not justify our bad roads. Th*se descriptions of Oconee and North Carolina roads ought to spur us up to a higher standard of road making. And lt takes mon ry to build roads. Our road makers are not all to blame. b -v can they make roads without money? The entire body of citizens must be Interested and edu cated on the question of good roads before we will see any material ad vancement In that line. The auto mobile highways from New York to Atlanta and from Atlanta to New Orleans will event!.ally prove of vast good to the entire country in practi cal demonstration of the great bene fits to be derived from a system of roads ready to accommodate all kinds of vehicles. These three descriptions of the roads as they now are constitute an eloquent appeal for better grades and better roads. The county of Aiken has establish ed a new criminal record.
