f lEXlNGTON SHERIFF ACCUSED. He is Charged with Not Arresting a Man who Carried a Fistol. Columbia. April 8.-Charges were flied to-day against Sheriff Colley, of Lexington county, befor? Gover nor Ansel, charging the sheriff with 'discriminating in a case involving the carrying of concealed weapons. The" papers state that last Saturday the sheriff heard the firing of pistols, and on going out in tho road met Thos.' Aughtrey, whom he accused. s Thjs Aughtrey denied, but on being searched a pistol was found on him. ?jjguieV more shots were heard, and Bberiff found Jas. Bagley with a ^pistol. Ho took the weapon from Bagley, and on the way back to Brookland met H. E. Avant, tho foreman of the McDuffle Lumber Co. In relating tho circumstances to Avant the latter Interrupted by pull ing out bis own pistol. Tho deputy shertfT took the pistol from him and handed lt to. the sheriff. After walk ing a few yards Sheriff Curley, ft is charged, returne'd the pistol, and cases were not brought against ei ther of the men. Aughtrey pleaded guilty and was fined $20. Frank Cauthorn, slayer of Mrs. Ada .Jones, wife of Sidney Jones, it was learned here to-day, has committed suicide by banging in the Southwest ern State Hospital at Marion. About a year ago Cautbron was sent to the hospital after having been declared insane by a Montgomery county jury, beforo which he was tried for murder. Cauthorn was about 21 years old, and Mrs. Jones, his victim, had been his sweetheart before her marriage. At the time of the trial Cautbron admitted that he committed the doer) fr,r i(vr- " the girl, and that he died hat ho could not be l wanted to meet her in another w< i ld. Now Yofk, April 9.-CollectoY Loeb announced to-day that the American Sugar Relining Company of New York has completed payment of the duty due the government on the reliquidation of its sugar entries in consequence of the recent Undings in the United States Circuit Court, lt was alleged lu that case that the sugar was underwe'.ghed. The pay ment to-day amounted to $342,900, making, a total of $1,239,088 that has been paid to thc government. Now that the corporation has paid the duties Imposed on the rellqulda tion of its sugar entries, it ls in a position to appeal the case to the higher courts.
