PLANING MILL TOTAL LOSS. Fire Destroyed Mr. Shockley's* Plant nt Salem Lust Thursday. . Last Thursday afternoon at 12 o'clock the saw mill and resaw plant belonging to James C. Shockley, nt Salem, this county, was completely destroyed by Are, which originated In thu boiler room. Tbe whole plant burnt like tinder. Just as the blaze was discovered the fire swept the whole of the boiler room, tho blaze igniting the fine sawdust which had lodged about the walls and ceilings. In this manner the flames spread from room to room In an instant, and the entire plant was gutted and fell In within half an hour. Mr. Shockley's loss ls estimated between $6,000 and $7,000. He figures the loss as follows: Lumber .$1,500 Damage to machinery... 2,000 Buildings . 1,500 Supplies . 1,200 Total loss.$6,200 Fortunately tho big dry kiln was saved. Realizing that efforts to save the mill would prove futile, all avail able force was thrown on the' dry kiln, and this was kept from the Hames. The kiln contained 75,000 feet of lumber ready to bo dressed. The loss falls heavily on Mr. Shockley. He had just gotten his plant In thorough working order when the disaster came. He had no insurance. He had carried a policy with tho Spartanburg Mutual, but that company has recently been In volved In the Courts, and Mr. Shock ley dropped his policy with them and bad not taken out other insurance. He will start at once to rebuild his plant; and has already secured the machinery, Two weeks will find him running lull time at his mill, and the 75,000 feet of kiln dried lum ber will enable bim to fill orders on band and take care of Immediate needs of his trade. (Jin Also Destroyed. The gin plant belonging to .Joshua Darker was destroyed also as a re sult of the burning of the Shockley lumber plant. The gin was localed near by, and power was furnished by the Shockley plant to operate the gin. Mr. Barker's loss was about % lion. A Healing Salve for Burns, Chapped Hands and Sore Nipples. Just exactly what improvements are to be made on the Walhalla Hotel property we are unable to state at present, but that material changes and Improvements are to be made at an early date ls certain. The owner of the property, J. D. Verner, has no information to give out, as his plans are not fully worked out as to detail. Nevertheless radical changes are to be made at an early date. That the remodeled hotel will bo equipped with wateworks is definite ly settled. The concrete foundation and pillars are already well under way for the water tank, which ls to have a capacity .?< ?,000 gallons. This work will be pushed to comple tion so as to have everything ready when work on the building ls com pleted. So far as we have been able to learn, the main part of the hotel building is to bo increased to three stories In height, the first fioor to be lowered some 16 or 18 inches, bring ing lt down to a level with the Main street sidewalk. The entrance will have a vestibule practically the same sizr ns the present front piazza, with iron or concrete pillars as supports, tile fioor ol' the vestibule to be of cement tile. The office and lobby will be conveniently arranged, open ing directly on tile vestibule. Tho present ell on Main street is to be removed as a whole. Tills will be replaced by two large store rooms and a section specially adapt ed as to convenience and arrange ment for the post office, We are in formed thal Mr. Verner has already made a definite contract willi the government for the accommodation of the post oillco. lt ls not definitely decided yet whether there will be living rooms over the Btores and post office, but it is quite probable that this space will be thus utilized and made to serve the purpose for nddKional hotel a>:? wuiinodation. Plans have not been completed, but lt ls understood that all details Will be worked out at an early dale. This change will bo hailed with delight by our citizens and the trav eling public, who have long regret ted our Inadequate hotel facilities. lt will also doubtless have the de sired effect of bringing Walhalla back to her old standard as a sum mer resort. -"...- - Object to Strong Medicines. Harris, of the State Farmers* Union, und Mr. Williams, of the government agricultural and industrial department, met with a distinct disappointmentlastSaturday. There were not over fl fly men in at tendance, and scarcely half of these were farinera. There were some thirty lady teachers present, they being there tor .the purpose of or ganizing a County Teachers' Associa tion. Miss Mary T. Nance was pre vented from being present, and a letter from her was read expressing her regret. Both President Harris and Mr. Williams made short talks on lines that had a bearing on rural schools as well as agricultural interests. They are seeking to encourage busi ness method? in conducting fruin operations, and advocate the teach ing in rural schools moro of upturn! history and less of Latin and Greek. The necessity for organization for mutual protection was strongly urg ed by President Harris, who gave numerous illustrations of how organ ization had already helped the agri cultural masses and benefited tho people of tho rural districts, giving thom all they now have of independ ence. Both men were strong In their Insistence for tho reduction of cotton acreage and nn increase of acreage tor small grain and articles for home consumption. Thc Southern farmer will never be prosperous so long as ho raises cotton to sell at a price sot by others, and at the same time buys corn and hay at prices three or four times more than the cost of produc tion, Dairying and stock raising were advocated as another means to bring the Southern farmer on a sound basis. Teachers' Association Organized. At the close of the talks by Mr. Harris and Mr. Williams, the meet ing was turned over to the teachers, who held a short, session. Without much discussion lt was unanimously decided that they should organize, and this was done by electing the following ollicers: President, W. C. Hughs; vice presi dent, Prof. J. L. Kennedy; secretary, Miss Bertie Smith. The following members were then enrolled: Misses Ethel Angel, Ma nive Howman, Jodie Haley, Mamie Har rison, Mary Lay. Lieze Perritt, Be, tie Smith, Carrie Smith and Bessie Wood; also H. R. Hughs, W. C. Hughs, J. L. Kennedy, Wm. McCraw ind J. K. Sanders. The next meeting is lo be held at Walhalla on Saturday, April 24th at 2 o'clock p. m. At this meeting the plans of tho permanent organi zation will be perfected. Program will be announced later. Not only the teachers here last Saturday, but all others, are earnestly requested to attend. Rheumatism. More than nine out of every ten cases of rheumatism are simply rheumatism of the muscles, due to cold or damp, or chronic rheuma tism. In such cases no internal treatment ls required. The free ap plication of Chamberlain's Liniment is all that ls needed, and lt ls cer tain to give quick relief. Give lt a trial and see for yourself how quick ly lt relieves the pain and soreness. The medicines usually given Inter nally for rheumatism are poisonous or very strong medicines. They are worse than useless in cases of chron ic and muscular rheumatism. For sale by J. W.
