Amerieus, Ga., Feb. 6.-A strung?1 negro, probably Insane, stole the de tached locomotive on a freight train on the Centra,! of Georgia Hallway In the Smithville yards this morning, anjj started the ponderous engine out of the yards. Beneath the locomo tive n*t work the fireman, when lt be gan to move, grasped for and clung to tho driving rods, his only chanco for escape from death. Whirled up and down within a few Inches of death for several minutes, he finally succeeded lu climbing over the rods to the running hoard along the en gine, then gained tl?? cali, while the engine with throttle wide open was making fast time towards Dawson. At sight of the fireman the negro then jumped from the cab. A crowd of men, who saw the fireman's nar row escape, pursued and caught the negro. Ile was brought here to Jail. Mrs. Smith, wife o? John Smith, died ii) Eastminster last Thursday. Her body was hurled in the Old Westminster cemetery Friday, fune ral services being conducted by Revs. A. P. Marett and .lohn R. Moore. She was about 3!? years old and leaves, besides her husband, five chil dren to mourn,her death. Geo, W. McConnell will open a hotel in the Carter house, now occu pied by Mrs. W. (?. Smithson, about February 15. Mr. McConnell is a good hotel manager and will no doubt succeed in his undertaking. He will operate his automobile from the depot io the hotel for the accom modation of transient boarders. w. J. Seneca, Kel?. 9.-Special: Not withstanding the very unfavorable weather, it number of enthusiastic li brary folks attended the meeting of the association, at the residence of Dr. El, A. Hines, tho president, last Friday evening. Matters pertaining to the Interests of the library wero discussed and neted upon. The ex ecutive committee was empowered to look toward securing a now home for the library, and If some of our liberal-hearted citizens would offer a home it would put the library on a safe basis. Now we know full well that there are numbers of our citi zens who are able and who are will ing, but the Idea just hasn't occurred to them. The executive committee would gladly hear from thom, and we believe we eau safely say that a home will be forthcoming. 'W?4> pub lic will remember thal for a lumber of years the librarian's salary was paid by the City Council, and room rent was also donated for several years.
