NEWS NOTES FROM PENDLETON. Marriage to Take Place on Novem ber ll?-Personal Mention. Pendleton, Nov. 7.-Special: Mrs. B. M. Aull entertained the "Tuesday Club" nt her home on last Tuesday afternoon. The club's Invited guests were the bride-elect, MI33 Ella Slt ton, Mrs. J. J. Hilton, Miss Emma Sitton, Miss LBd Strlbllng and Miss Cora Aull. After the business of tho club was transacted Mrs. Aull served n tempting snlad course. Miss Ella Sitton and B. P. Hunter attended the Flower Show at Seneca on Tuesday. B Harris attended the State Fair at Columbia last week. Eugene Sidon has returned from Columbia, after visiting friends there. Miss Kate Sharp is visiting rela tives in Anderson. Jesse C. Strlbllng, of Anderson, spent a few hours in town Monday adjusting Dr. W. W. Watklnc's new automobile. Mrs. J. L. Hunter spent Tuesday morning in Anderson. Miss Emm*. Sitton is visiting her friend, Miss Lipscomb, at. Ninety-Six. Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Evans and fam ily have returned, after spending sev eral months in Union. B. Hardy Sadler and Miss Ella Sit ton are to be married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Sitton, on November 11th at noon. The Misses Strlbllng charm ingly entertained in honor of the bride-to-be at their home, "Sleepy Hollow, on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Sitton, attired in a lovely gown of lavendar and gray, received with Mrs. Stribllng in the front parlor, which was decorated in yellow chrys. anthemums and ferns. Tho back par lor was very pretty In white chrysan themums and potted plants. On en tering the dining room Miss Sitton was showered by Miss Lelze Strlh ling with tunny dnlnty and useful presents from her friends. The din ing room was beautifully decorated in pink chrysanthemums and Ameri can Beauty roses. A delightful salad course was served by the Misses Strlb llng and Louise Hunter. (Columbia State. 4th. ) There was an Interesting story in circulation here yesterday to the ef fect that a handsome young woman from the up-country had been mixed up in a diamond ring scandal of some kind, to the extent that she was de tained for several hours by the offi cers of the law, pending Investiga tion. 'phe charge was that she was responsible for a ring going from the possession of Its rightful owner. Male relatives of the young lady -.vere tele phoned to and came in on an early train and made th,- matter all right. lt was impossible to learn more of tlie details, but it is said that the whole matter has been settled to the satisfaction of all parties concerned. Baltimore, Nov. 6.-Baltimore's vote this week In fiwor of an issue of $5,000,000 of bonds for an ex tension of Its water-works upon the most comprehensive scale emphasizes tho activity in municipal Improve ments in the South. Among those noted by the Manu facturer's Record is the spending, within tho near future, of nearly $300,000 upon the streU3 of Little Rock, Ark. That city has recently awarded a contract of $59,549 for paving two mlies of streets In one section, and another contract of $69, 000 for paving in another section. To meet this contract, the city will spend $57,000 and the county $15,000, while the electric raliway will spend $175,000. The autnorltles at Richmond, Va., have Just awarded contracts of $47, 748 for a new pumping station, in cluding $19,805 for cast Iron pipes and special castings for a new force line between the reservoir and pump house; $14,350 for four centrifugal water pumps with an artesian capa city of 4,000,000 gallons daily each; $7,4'io for electric motors and ap purtenances, and $6,460 for an ad dition to the steam pump house. Danville, Va., has awarded a $22, 000 contrnct for improvements in Its electric light plant. Fast Point, Ga., has voted $15.000 of bonds for similar Improvements, and Norcross, In the same State,voted this week on a like proposition. Among the corporate undertakings evolving electric lighting of towns and cities is the planned expenditure of $15,000 by a company at Boons boro, Md., to develop about two hun dred horse power from a stream to construct six miles of wiring and to transmit light and power to Boons boro and other cities. A company at Bristol, Tenn., ls proceeding with the development of its plans for a water-power electric plant, calling for the construc tion of two concrete dams 100 feet long, 15 feet wide at the bottom, 12 feet high and 5 feet wide at the top. and the erection of twenty milos of transmission wire. To supply Albertville, Ala., with electric lights until the development of a water power at Short Creek Kails a franchise has been given a steam power plant In North Highlands. The wounded lady ls much better, and there are strong hopes for her recovery from the wound. _ ... Four Killed in a Mine. Renton, 111.. Nov. 6.-An explosion at the mine of Col. W. P. Rond, three tulles west of Benton, late to-day wrecked the shaft, and as a result four shot firers are entombed. So terrific was the explosion that a car and pieces of rnilroad track were hurled from the bottom to the top of the shaft, more than 000 feet, de molishing a steel tipple. Annual Meeting will be Held in Lau rens on November until. The one hundred and twenty-third session of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Episco pal Church. South, will be held In Laurens, November 26th, Bishop Al pheus W. Wilson, of Baltimore, pre siding. This is the third official vlsi: of Bishop Wilson to the South Caro lina Conference within the last five years, lie is the senior Bishop of Southern Methodism; strong and forcible as a preacher, positive and conservative as a presiding officer. He ls thoroughly familiar with tho nsau"s o? the church and its labor. An annual conference occupies a very prominent place in Methodism. The whole year's work focuses on this annual meeting. Here the preach ers render their reports; here the characters of the preachers are exam ined and passed upon In onen confer ence; here the preachers Ireceive their appointments for the coming year. There are at present 2 35 pas toral charges In South Carolina, with a membership of 85,161. Entertain ment will be provided for about 150 preachers and delegates. The work of the conference is accomplished largely by committees, and but for this it would be Impossible to accom plish the work in three or four days. There are eight new presiding el ders who enter the Bishop's cabine*, for the first time. A great responsi bility rests upon the presiding elder. His position ls a critical and trying one. Ho is really an assistant bishop. There ls nothing except the usual iou tine to come before the conference nt this session. The election of dele gates to the General Conference will take place at the next session. Last year the conference met Its ass essment for missions in full lot* the first time in its history. Vienna, Nov. f>.-The Extrablatt states that Dom Miguel, of Braganza, son of the claimant to the Portugese throne, is betrothed to Mary, daugh ter of George M. Pullman, the Ameri can railroad man. The prince met Miss Pullman at Ostend last season and became engaged to her, but the announcement was postponed pend ing the conferment of some rank on Miss Pullman. It is stated that the wedding will take place in London at the end of November. Mormon Church Dynamited. Montreal, Ga., Nov. 5.-Dynamite was used last night about ten o'clock by unknown parties to destroy a Mor mon church located at this place, which is situated in DeKalb county. There are only a few houses in this place, which has about a hundred in habitants. There is no clue to the perpetrators. Feeling against the Mor mons has been high for some time. The Knoct-ont Blow. "WHEN LAWYERS DISAGREE.*1 John Gary Evans und S. G. Finlay, Two Lawyers, Fall Out. (Spartanburg Journal.) John Gary Evans and S. G. Finlay, two well known lawyers, engaged in a personal encounter In the office of Nichols & Nichols, at a reference that was being held to wind up the law business that formerly existed between Messrs. Evans and Finlay. The reference was being held before several well known lawyers,who sepa* rated Messrs. Finley and Evans be fore either of them sustained Injur ies. Messrs. Evans and Finley were associated in the practice of law at the Spartanburg bar for several years and a few months ago they dissolved the partnership, and there was a dis agreement as to a settlement. It was finally agreed to leave the matter to several members of the local bar, and two or three references had been held previous to this one. On resuming the reference this time Mr. Finley took exceptions to a statement made by Mr. Evans, and they came to blows, but were separated before either of them sustained any injuries of any account. Election Riot in Now York. New York, Nov. 5.-As the result of election rioting yesterday morn ing two persons were killed and four injured in this city.
