Fairview, Lincoln, Neb.. July 29. -Charging that Wm. H. Taft "is not satisfied with tho work of the Chl <oago convention," which nominated him as the Republican candidate for ?be Presidency, and that "he Is deep ly Impressed with the work of the Democratic convention," Wm. J. H ryan to-day issued a statement in which he expresses the opinion that Air. Taft "fears the uprising which Republican abuses have caused, and yet hesitates to adopt his real and substantial reforms." The statement was called forth be cause of the allegations made by Haft in his speech of acceptance at Cincinnati yesterday that Mr. Bryan wna a destroyer of business. In re fgard to the speech Mr. Bryan said: "I read lt and shall discuss lt as I .Jeal with the various subjects upon which it treats. For instance, In a speech at Topeka betw ? a now and Ibo first of September i shall discuss the guaranty of bunks and contrast Mr. Taft's position with the Demo cratic position. In my Labor Day speech at Chicago on September 7 I shall discuss his attitude on the la bor question. In other speeches I Ahull discuss his attitude on the tar iff question, the trust question and other questions on which he has ex pressed himself. The most noticea ble feature in his speech Is his at tempt to amend the Republican plat form by engrafting in it some of the planks of the Democratic platform. He Is evidently not satisfied with the Nvork of his convention and Is deeply Impressed by Gie work of the Demo cratic convention. He la uncharita ble, however, In not giving the Dem ocratic party credit for having point ed out the reforms which his conven tion repudiated, but which he In a half-hearted way endorses. The speech shows that he fears the up rising which Republican abuses have caused, and yet hesitates to adopt his ron! and substantial reforms." Confirmation was given by Mr. Hrynn to the story printed in the afternoon that ll was not his Inten tion to riakc any extended campaign ?our, but only to deliver .1 few pre ;.**red speeches at central points be fore thc first of October, and that sluring that month he expects to re main homo and assist in the educa tional work of the campaign through ?be discussion of public questions in ?.ho form of signed articles. Inter views and letters. " The outline of my plan of cam paign, as printed to-day," said Mr. Drjan, "is substantially correct, but I am not yet prepared to announce flu* number of speeches or the places. Upsides speaking at Topeka in Au .-iust, and at Chicago on Labor Day, I shall attend the Democratic con vention at Peoria on September 9, the notification of Mr. Kern at In dianapolis on a date not yet fixed, rind a farmers' convention at Madi son, Wis., about September 2f>." Many Visitors. Although the heat was Intense to day, a large number of visitors rode out to Fairview and paid their re spects lo thc Democratic leader. One of these was J, T. Flynn, of Bellaire. Ohio, who was a delegate to the Den ver convention. Mr. Flynn discussed (politics With Mr. Bryan for some tim*., and expressed the belief that Ohio would be found in the Demo cratic, Column in November. Brynn's speech of Acceptance. The actual writing of his speech of acceptance has not yet been begun by Mr. Bryan, but he said to-day that his ideas were about formulated and he would enter upon the work of preparation lu a day or two. The .Vail that an additional stenographer rras appeared on the scene is an In dication that all is in readiness for ?his Important task. PAYS PENAJLTY-USUAL CRIME. Negro Tuleen from Jail, Hanged and Riddled with Bullet?. Pensacola, Pla., July 29.-In a des perate fight with a negro named Le ander A. Shaw, In her home, near this city, to-day Mrs. ..thin Davis sustained a gash across :'.? throat, was otherwise beaten and her baby hurt In her struggles to resist the attempts of Shaw to assault uer. . When accosted by Shaw Mrs. Davis secured a revolver and ordered the negro from the house. He grasped the weapon, and taking out his knife drew the blade across her throat and in escaping from the house struck the baby. Two hours later a deputy sheriff captured Shaw after a hard fight. Mrs. Davis, although In a critical condition, has identified Shaw. In tense excitement prevails. Meets Quick lK-atli Penalty. Pensacola, Fla., July 29.-Three men dead and a score wounded, some probably fatally, ls the record of an attempt to-night by a mob to storm the county jail and take out the negro. Leander Shaw, who to-day as saulted Mrs. Titian Davis near here. The mob numbered probably 100 persons and gathered early, but there was no apparent indication that the crowd, which completely surrounded the jail, contemplated making a rush until some hours later. The first indication was when a railroad iron was brought Into play by about a dozen men upon the iron gate of the jail yard. At the same moment tho entire mob seemed to catch the spirit, and with yells and curses dashed for the jail entrance. Some climbed over the tall iron fence, while others hammered upon the gate. The sheriff and half a dozen depu ties stood In windows upstairs with drawn revolvers and riot rifles. The sheriff pleaded with the mob, at the same time telling them he would de fend the prisoner at the cost of every life present. His words had no effect and the moment the first blow was struck on the gate a volley of shots (lashed from the upper windows of the jail. . This was answered by the crowd, which poured volley after vol. ley Into the jail windows, wounding two deputies. The mob was mo mentarily driven back with many wounded and one dead as a result of the deadly aim of the sheriff and his deputies. At midnight the mob, which had in the meantime been reinforced by many residents ot the surrounding country, made another attack upon the jail. The sheriff and officers were over powered hy some of the men who had crept over the rear wall and covered them with rifles and revolvers. Oth ers broke down the cell door and took Shaw out. The negro was carried to the cen ter of the pla a and hanged to an electric light pole, after which fully ")00 shots were fired Into his body. In this latter fight H. C. Kellum. a street car conductor, was killed, while two deputies and four or five of tho mob we.-ft wounded. At 1 o'clock this (Thursday) morn ing everything is quiet and the mob has dispersed. The Third Congressional District has i; mighty fine Congressman-In fact, we are not missing a true state ment very far If we should say that he ls the best one In the State. Wyatt Aiken Is a working Congressman, no grass growing under his feet. He ls one of the most Intelligent members of the lower house, tactful and dis creet at all times. He has done and ls now doing more good for his district than any man we could possibly send there. By his shrewd diplomacy he can get more Republicans to vote for his bills than any other Democrat, at the same time not compromising his political principles. During his five years In Congress he has had the following appropriations made for his district: Public buildings at Newberry, 160,000; at Greenwood, $60,000; at Anderson. $70,000." He had not less than thirty-two bills passed by the last Congress-more than any other member. How's that, citizens of the Third District? Surely you are not going to remove this man simply because another man wants the job. Mr. Aiken made three rattling good speeches during the last Con gress-one of which was so good, from the Democratic point of view, that lt has been copied In the Demo cratic Hand Book for nntional distri bution. Say, you mill boys, turn out and send your good Congressman back. Stick to your old horse. A new one might throw you. Aiken is well on to the Job. He will get better and better as he gets more experience. We do not believe you are going to let that good-heart ed, big-hearted boy get left. Wind a New Jersey Editor Says. M. T.
