Think of the United States with a President who does not believe thkt Jesus Christ was the Sou of Cod, but looks upon our immaculate Saviour as a common bastard and low, cun ning Impostor! What must Mr. Taffs feeling be toward our civilization, whl>'h is so permeated and inter woven with the religion of Jesus Christ? Take Christ, the Inspiration of His gospel, lils sacrifice and His church out of ont national history and life, and what would we have left? Try to Imagine the discovery and civilization of this great conti nent passing through Its many trials and conflicts without tho ministers of Jesus and His grace. Take His nanto and power out of our slvilizatlon, tear away the churches which have kbeon erected for His worship, the schools that hnve beer. erected to His honor, in which His teachings have been repeated an 1 emphasized, blot out-the charitable Institutions which have'sprung up out of devoted love for Him, take His name ouf of our literature, His praise out of our songs, His doctrines from our society and homes, His promises from the foundation of our hopes and His love from our hearts, and what would bo left? Are we ready, by electing this commonplace unbeliever our chief magistrate, to repudiate our faith In the world's Redeemer.? Will we dare the reckless risk of crucifying the Son of God afresh; will we, after all of our preaching His word, praise of Him and praying to Him, put Him to open shame before the civilized and heathen world? What would Europe think of us? I venture to say that civilized Europe would not think of putting the crown upon the head of a man who denied the Mos slahshlp of Chirst. How would our missionaries answer the questions of shrewd and smiling heathen who must inquire how it is that your Chlrstian nation has elected a man to the Presidency who has no more faith in Jesus Christ than a naked savage? How could Mr. Taft, if he were President, represent us? Illa belief ls so different from ours, or rather his unbelief is so contradictory to our faith-he cannot sympathize with us, he cannot enter with us into our feelings and holy hopes and aspira tions. What stupid Idolaters we must appear to him! As ho passes by the church buildings, they are to him but the monuments of our ignorance and superstition. And this man asks our Chlrstian ministers to trail the banner of the Cross In the dust and vote for him for the Presidency. He would have the Christian manhood of this nation to turn their hacks upon the Chirst who died for them, and lift hint upon the price of their apostacy, to the highest place In the nation. How could he enter with us into the joys of our Christinas cele brations? It would seem that a man with a mind so twisted as to have no faith in thc Chirst and a heart so cold that' in it there ls no love for the Son of God, who gave Himself for the ran som of the race, would prefer to go and live among the Turks and wor ship with the Mohammedans. There ls a much closer sympathy between the religious faith of Mr. Taft and the Turk than there is between his faith and that of the Christian faith of the American people. Every min ister of the gospel and layman of tho faith, and every mother who loves our Lord, and every Sabbath school child In the nation, ought to rise up and march to the polls on election day, singing, "All hall the power of Jesus' name," and give Mr. Taft a rebuke that will go ringing around tho world, up to heaven, and down through the centuries. "Jesus, the name high over all. In hell or earth or sky; Angels and men before lt fall, And devils fear and fly." SlOO Reward-$100. Anderson Mall. ^ CRUEL AND CRAFTY CRI MK. Woman Lured to I>eath for Bake of Her Little Fortune. New,York, July 22.-A crime so eruelly crafty as to be almost unbe lievable is revealed in the case of Mrs. OttUUe Eberhard, a Viennese widow, whose body was foun" on the New York, Susquehanna and West ern Railroad track, in a lonely sec tion near Hackensack, N. J. The po.ice of every Eastern city are searching for August Eberhard, the victim's nephew, who for months Importuned her to come here with a fortune ot $2,600 and her twenty year-old daughter, whom A-igust promised to marry. The girl refuses to believe that August, had anything to do with lt. His parents live on a farm near Dutchess Junction, New York. The victim, with her daughter, ar rived In New York last week. Eb erhard ls employed In a grocery store In St. Nicholas avenue. He set tled them at a hotel here, and con verted the money Into American notes. He took them to the country on the pretext of heat. At Rochelle Park, at his sugges tion, the trio strolled In the fields. Eberhard claimed he had lost the way. A thunderstorm broke. The woman stumbled on the track, ex claiming she had been struck by lightning. Miss Eberhard says there were three flashes from behind a car on a siding. As her mother fell the girl felt a bullet graze her own neck, cutting a gold chain. Eberhard urg ed her to run, and as she did so she was struck by two bullets. . The girl was cared for at a nearby j cottage. The murderer must have shot the widow as she lay prostrate. Murderer Confesses. New York, July 23.-Drawn back to the scene of his crime by a force he could not resist, August Eberhard, self-confessed murderer of his aunt, Mrs. OtttlUe Eberhard, a Vlennesse widow, whom he lured to a lonely spot In New Jersey a few days ago and shot to death, was captured near Paterson, N. J., and ls now a prlson I er in the llackensack. jail. What In 1 forested the authorities most In the confession Eberhard made to them late to-day was the reasons he gave for committing the crime. Eberhard said that he was In love with a New York girl, and that he needed money to marry her, so, knowing that his aunt had $2.500, he plotted to kill her and steal *he money. Eberhard said he also Intended to kill his pret ty cousin, Ottlllie Eberhard, to whom Me was engaged, so that nothing would stand in the way of his mar j rlage to the New York girl. The po lice have the name of a girl men tioned by Eberhard, and she will be brought to Hackensack to tell what she knows of the murder. With hollow eyes, cheeks drawn, and with the look of a hunted animal I on his face, Eberhard was found ly I lng on thc lawn of a residence Just outside of Paterson. There was an ugly-looking wound In his right leg, which the murderer first said had been Inflicted by Italians who at tacked him, but which he afterwards confessed was Inflicted by himself so as to make the police believe he had been wounded on the night his aunt was killed. Morbid brooding over his inhuman crime had apparently un balanced the mind of Eberhard, but he showed some of the cunning that he displayed in the murder plot when the police questioned him about the murder. Eberhard did not Immediately con. fess to the police. When he was placed under arrest he expressed sur prise that he should be suspected of the foul deed, and told a most Inge nious story to account for his dis appearance after the shooting of his aunt to the effect that on the night of the murder he had tried to defend his aunt against the attack of a party of six Italians. He said he made his cousin run on ahead, and# then returned to i:clp his aunt, but the murderers owr powered him after shooting him In the leg. Then, he said, he lost con sciously-, i and remembered nothing until he cime to his senses In the Preakness mountains. He gave a graphic description of his alleged wandering In the moun tains. The Inquisitors ?lid not believe his story, and they kept Eberhard On the grill until he weakened and made a confession. The murderer seemed to feel relieved when he had finished his remarkable narrative of the mur der. lie asked the prosecutor, to whom he had confessed, for a cigar, and when lt was given to him he smoked it as though he had no other care In the world. An imi>ortant point In the confession was the state ment by Eberhard that he had an ac complice in the murder plot, ile said, however, that his accomplice had no hand in the killing of Mrs. Eberhard. This man, who was one of Eberhard's friends, has fled to the West and the police are looking for him. They have bis name. Eberhard told the police that he had planned tho murder two months ago. Ile wrote many letters to his aunt In his efforts to Induce her to sell her home in Germany and come to thlH country to live. He even promised that he would marry her daughter, OttilUo, and make a com fortable home for her aere. Then Eb?ihard recounted the ar rival of his aunt and his cousin, Qi tlllle, of his Anding rooms for them lu a rooming house in West 23d street, of the-trip to New Jersey and the fatal walk up the railroad tracks. A blludlng rain storm came up while they were walking up the Susque hanna tracks, and this aided the mur deter in his purpose. As the two un suspecting women were plodding along in front of him he drew his re volver, took careful aim and flred. Mrs. Eberhard fell at the first shot, but to make sure of her death the assassin Ared another shot into her body as lt lay on the tracks. Then he went In pursuit of his cousin and tried to kill her. The poor girl be lieved he was trying to protect her, and evon up to yesterday she had In sisted that she did not bellovo ber cousin had murdered her mother. She accounted for his disappearance by the theory that he probably was shot by the murderers. When Eber hard was searched not a penny was found In the pockets. Eberhard said he had burled the money he stole from his aunt. He led detectives to a tree near Little Falls and there dug >'p o, bundle of bills. There was $2,100 in tho bundle, which ls the amount that was stolen, as the mur derer left a small amount of money in the bosom of his aunt's waist so af. to give the Impression that she had not been robbed. Eberhard had also burled his own poe'eet-book, contain ing $26, so as to bear out his story that he had been attacked by Ital ians and robbed. Eberhard says that he and his ac complice escaped from the scene of cr?nic on a WSSt-uOttnd train, ne UK clares that he passed through Al bany, Troy and Buffalo In to Cana da and on to Detroit and Chicago without being recognized by the po lice. When he reached Chicago he says that an Irresistible power com pelled him to return to the scene of the crime, and then ht? planned to wound himself and surrender to the police in the belief that he could con vince them he had not murdered his aunt. When Ottillle Eberhard was told of her cousin's confession she was astounded. She ls living In Ha. ken sack and has been receiving the at tentions of a young steward named Held, who wa* on the steamship on which she and lur mother came to this country, lt ls believed that she will marry Held as soon as the pres ent trouble ls over.
