About one hundred of the Clemson boys expelled last April will be read mitted to that institution at the next session. This action has been de cided upon by the faculty of the col lege. The trustees refused to Inter fere In the matter, leaving the whole question to be sottled by those In di rect contact with and authority over the student body. In this, we think", they acted wisely, as did also the""f?c ulty in making possible the return of some of the boys expelled. The faculty were in a position to go to the very bottom of the matter and sift it thoroughly, which they have doubtless done. The expulsion act was one of wisdom, for at that time prompt action was Imperative. lt was impossible on the moment to decide who in the large body were tho real culprits, and the expulsion of all who participated in the folly of April 1st was the only solution. That act gave the faculty ample time be tween sessions to sift the matter thoroughly. At the close of tho In vestigation those of tho students who merited expulsion have received their punishment In full; those who were not deserving of sucb extreme pun ishment are In position to receive a modification of it, and return to the college if they desire. The whole transaction, from start to finish, could not have been more wisely planned nor more equitably executed. lu the final outcome the student who merited expulsion re ceives it; those who merited sus pension have, by the modification of the expulsion order, received their just punishment; the college faculty have asserted their authority, which \a now established as supreme In all matters of discipline; and the dis cipline of the institution has been vindicated beyond a question. lt is safe to say that to-day Clem son stands on a firmer basis and more exalted plane than at any time in Its history. There is but one way to maintain her present standing, and Ave believe lt will be maintained. The faculty has Its unquestioned province and the board of trustees occupies a sphere exclusively Its own. Let each of these bodies work and act within its prescribed sphere, as was done In this recent case thc one upholding the other, each religiously abstain ing from meddling with the other, each working with an eye single to thc good of Clemson. The result must and will brhig credit to the college, and widen and uioa'en her already enviable sphere among our greatest Institutions. < JA MI \\ ION M E ET I NOS. This is somewhat of an Improve ment on the old-style two-ring circus, the "big show" being divided Into two sections, playing only one night stands, so to speak, and allowing all to see the big animals perform with out the hindrance of a rush. Till: COURIER APPRECIATED. Mill Workers' World: "Among the many excellent papers that refresh our exchange table we can hardly help mentioning The Keowee Courier of 1 "einalla. This is one of the strongest county pap? "-? In the whole country. The solid edito Inls and the great body of local news every week show ability and Industry worthy of imitation. Hy the way, the editor of this paper bas a standing order from his better half to bring The Courier homo every time without fall. lt may be proper to add that this wor thy lady learned her letters from the pages of The Courier when a child living up In the ecge of North Caro lina." We appreciate Lils kind remark from our friend, the editor of Mill Workers' World, who ls a competent judge of newspaper excellence as well a? ono of the producers of it. The Mill Workers' World has built up a field with wide scope, and is ably oc cupying lt. May the World continue to grow and prosper. If the Constitution Building in At 'anta could hut speak the sentiments of that paper, we can well imagine this regular morning greeting to the Journal's grim walls: "Smile, d you!" , The Republican leaders Just at present are very zealous In trying to "patch up" that Grant speech of Taft's. Verily, Taft ls fo lo ving early In tho footsteps of Roosevelt, who lins kept the party busy i'or years apolo gizing for him. If Chicago has ever failed to sus tain Its reputation as the "windy city," now is her time to make good. If somebody will just puncture the G. ?. IVs gas bag during the con vention now in session there will he a swirling and twirling of wind and foul gases that would make a West ern cyclone look like 30 cents counterfeit at that. It begins to look like Roosevelt will carry off the nomination at Chi cago In spite of himself. If he should receive the nomination for a third term, Roswell,Ga., will become prom, inent as a President-maker. Citizens of that town started a petition some months ago asking for a second elec tive term for Mr. Roosevelt, and that petition was closed with more than fifty thousand signers among the citi zens of Georgia. It Is In the hands of the Roosevelt enthusiasts. Dr. Henry N. Snider, of Wo ff o rd College, who was last week elected president of the South Carolina Uni versity, has declined to serve. He was earnestly besought by the facul ty and students of Wofford not to leave that Institution, and Saturday sent the following telegram to tho university authorities: "After conscientious delibera tion, I feel compelled to remain here. Letter following." Thus Wofford retains a good man, and the South Carolina University must look again for a president. . . 9 * . For the first time in twenty-seven years Senator Gore, of Oklahoma, on Tuesday of last week was enabled to discern an object. He has been un der treatment hy a specialist in the city of Washington, and lt ls now hoped that his sight may be perma nently restored. Senator Gore, in spite of his great affliction of total blindness, has Indelllhly Impressed himself upon this country during his first, session In Congress, and the en tire country will await with interest and high hope ?the final outcome of the efforts to restore to him the great blessing of sight.
