WEEVIL IS A DEAD BEAT, And ls Coming Eastward on Passen ger Cars from Texas. Columbia, October 26.-D. N. Bar row, of Lake Charles, La., who is at work in this territory as general as sistant to Dr. S. A. Knapp in the Far mers' Co-operative demonstration work of the Department of Agricul ture, was here to-day, and in talking in State Superintendent of Educa tion Mart in's office of the probability of the boll weevil reaching South Carolina in the near future said that it was a surprise to bim and others who had had much experience fight ing the boll weevil that It had not al ready reached this State. "It is traveling steadily eastward at the rate of 60 or 60 miles a sea son, but it flleB thiB distance. Thl? weevil is a dead beat on trains. I have myself noticed them in passen ger coaches in Texas. And only a pair UL i in-MI ib i?tjC?rir ,iry to start thc devilment in this Stale, they propa gate ?o rapidly." Explaining how the Importation of the Guatemalaen ant to sting out the weevil had proven a failure, Mr. Bar row said that the trouble with this ant was not so much that it did not discriminate between the weevil and the field hands, hut that lt was not used to this country and did not prove an effective enemy to the wee vil. Speaking of his experience in as sisting in a quarantine experiment against the weevil in Louisiana, the expert farmer said that the old theo ry was that the weevil did not fly ex cept from plant to plant. On this theory the Louisiana Legislature tried to cut off the weevil by drawing a belt Beveral acres wide across im mediately in front of this advancing army, no cotton being allowed in this belt. One bright morning the weevil was found by the millions in fields 60 miles east of this point. The ad vance guard of the army flew that far In a night. The only way to checkmate the weevil, BO far s the Agricultural De partment haB ieen able to discover, is to niant early a rapidly maturing klndQf cotton and get the bolls ma tured before he comes on the scene in the spring, being careful In the time to burn all stubble in the fields in the winter and plow them deep at the same time. They Make Yon Feel Good. The pleasant purgative effect ex perienced by all who use Chamber lain's Stomach and Liver Tablets, and the healthy condition of the body and mind which they create maxes one feel Joyful. D., who has been the pastor of the First Bap tist church of this city for the past eight years, submitted his resigna tion to the congregation yesterday, to take effect on December lBt. Several days ago it became known that Dr. Chapman had received a call from the First Baptist church at Val dosta, Ga. He visited that etty last week and went over the church field there and decided to accept the call. The congregation of the church here are loth to give up Dr. Chapman and his estimable family, and it is very probable that an effort will be made next Sunday to have them re main in Anderson. C . C .
