The following very pertinent para graph has appeared in the local and editorial columns of at least a dozen papers in the last ten days. Its pointed truth struck us forcibly, and we were about to give credit for it when we noticed that it had a simul taneous appearance in many papers: "Lawyers stand up in court houses before Jurors in the presence of largo audiences, and denounce men as liars, scoundrels, thieves and per jured vllllans, and when court ad journs tho mon appear to harbor no ill will against them. But lot a newspaper faintly intimate that a man's character is blemished, and he has to confront a horse plBtol, stand a libel suit jr suffor what the people think to be the greatest of all morti fications-loso a subscriber." Now, tho question arises, Whoso 1B it? and Who stole it? It cotalns a blt of truth for which some ono is justly entitled to credit. All those whtf have published it as editorial wilfplease keop quiet. Stuyvesant Pish has recently been spending some time at Oyster Bay. Evidently he is not such a lobster as some people seem to think. ***** Two servant girls in New York were arm ed last week for "playing hobo." Tho servant glrla In this sec tion of the country play h-well, no, not hobo exactly, and they don't get arrested for lt either. ***** The President and Attorney Gene ral, according to a Washington dis patch, "are alive to tho fact that the papor trust ?B again doing business." The newspaper? of the country have been "alive" to the fact for some time. ***** Tho Atlanta Georgian says: "Let tho people understand the pump question. If the Georgian, the Con stitution and the Journal could un say tho thousands of things they have said about the pump question we do not doubt that the people would un rle rsi and lt thoroughly. ? * * * * lt seems a little ominous that tho announcement of the absolute di vorce decree, annulling the marriage of Count do Castellnlne and his wife, formerly Miss Gould, should appear lu the dispatches the same day as the announcement of the coming mar riage of Misa Gladys Vanderbilt to Count Lazzlo Szechonyl. It may be nil right, but lt looks like "throwing good nionoy after bad titles." : > |>IED IN THEATRE. Banjo Maker Stricken, Passed Away to Music of "Hell Bolt." Chicago, October 5.-A gray-hair ed maker of banjoes died In the Olympic Theater last night while the music of "Don't You Remember Sweet Miro Hen Bolt." strummed on 'he stage on instruments of his own make, calmed the large audience which had been thrown Into a seml panlc. J. B. Schall, 5.r. years old, occupied a front seat In tho lower balcony. Ile had visited the theater especially to hear the playing of two musical specialists who used banjoes which had been turned out by his own hand. Suddenly Hchail roso in his seat wfth a choking cry, swayed for a mo ment as if he would topple over the balcony rall Into thu crowded par quet, and then crumpled down on the door. Intense excitement prevailed. Schall'? collapse was witnessed by throe-fourths of the people In the house. Several women near him screamed. H?hers and attendants hurried to him and carried him to the foyer, where they laid him on the carpeted floor and attempted to restore consciousness. The two players upon tho stage had reached a pause in their musical ''Specialties." Looking across the footlights they saw the man collaps and realized the danger of a panic 1 in tho packed house. At once they nlungod Into a wild medley of music to quiet the alarm of the audience. Their efforts were successful. While tho musicians played merry airs tho audience listened lu attentive silence, unaware that a maa was dying be hind tile last tier of the balcony. Once Schall caine to his senses. He opened lila eyes and said: "I think 1 can go home now." Just then tho banjoes on thc stage struck np, "Don't You Remember Sweet Alice Hen Bolt," an.1 na the last bara of the old tune ceased, tho audience burst Into a tumult of npplause, and the old musician died. Quinsy, Sprains and Swellings Cured. "In November, 1901, I caught cold ?nd had the quinsy. My throat was swollen so I could hnrdly broatne. I applied Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and lt gave relief In a short time. In two days I was all right." says Mrs. L. Cousins, Otterburn, Mich.
