An Interesting Article to ers-Sure Rem The last bulletin issued by Clemson College deals with the subject of "Garden and Orchard Inseots." A very interesting chapter is an article by Prof. Cbambliss in whioh he tells when to apply insecticides or other treatment. If the noders are inter ested in the different emulsions re oommended by Prof. Chambliss, they will find this article very helpful. As to the application of the insecticides, Prof. Chambliss paper is as follows : Apple-For codling moth, apply Paris green in liquid form or arsenate of lead as soon as tho blossoms fall ; repeat before the fruit turns dowD. Collect and destroy the fallen fruit. On trunk of tren use a band of cotton or burlap during July, AugiiBt and September ; remove this band every 10 days and kill tho insects found under it. For wooly aphis, apply kerosene emulsion or whale oil soap as soon as the insect appears on the limbs ; re peat whenever necessary. For the root form, uso tobacco. For tho apple aphis, apply kero sene emulsion or whale oil soap when the buds open, if the lice appear ; re peat live days later, or before the leakes begin to curl. For the San J oso Beale, apply tho lime and sulphur wash to all parts of tho tree in December ; repeat in Feb ruary if treo is badly encrusted, in Hummer apply kerosene emulsion. For tent-cat >rpillar and fall web worm, apply Paris green in liquid form or arsenate of lead when the caterpillars appear ; repeat, if neccB Hary, ten days later. When first seen, tho nesta of these inseots should be destroyed by burning them, which should be done only on cloudy days or lato in the afternoon. For tho oyster-shell scale and scurfy scale, apply kerosene emulsion during tho winter; repeat in April. Asparagus-For asparagus beetle, apply pyrethrum in liquid form when tho young appear ; repeat every four days during the cutting season. After the cutting season, apply arsenate of lead. Bean-For leaf bettie, apply Paris green in liquid form or arsenate of lead when thu beetles appear ; repeat whenever necessary. Either of these insecticides may be used with Bor deaux mixture. Celery-For caterpillar, apply ar senate of load in Bordeaux mixture when tho caterpillars appear ; repeat a week later if necessary. Cabbage, Cauliflower and Collard -For aphis, apply keroseno emul sion, whale oil soap or tobacco decoc tion whon tho lice appear; repeat ono week later. After the crop has boon gathered, plow up and destroy all parts of plant that remain. For tho harlequin bug, apply kero sene emulsion or whale oil soap upon the first appearance of the insect. ; re peat whenever necessary. Use mus tard in cabbage patch ap a trap crop. On this plant destroy insects with pure korosonc. For cabbage caterpillar and other leaf-eating caterpillars, apply Paris green in liquid form once a wook un til hoad ?B nearly grown, if tho inBects appear. Uso pyrethrum on the older plants. For root-maggot, apply carbolic acid emulsion to thc seil around thc bose of tho plant. Cantaloupe and Watermelon-For the aphis, apply to tho under surface of leaves kerosene emulsion, whale oil soap or tobacco decoction as soon as the insects appear ; repeat every live day? until the lice are destroyed. For beetles and leaf-eating insects, apply Paris green or arsenate of lead with Bordeaux mixture while plant is young. Use air.slaked limo or to bacco dust as a repellaut. Cherry-For aphis, apply keroseno emulsion or tobacco decoction before the loaves begin to curl ; if necessary to control thc insect, repeat every five days. For ourculio, apply Paris green in liquid] form or arsenate of lead when tb? first leaves appear ; repoat aH soon as fruit is set, and a third application ton days later. Jar the tree after tho fruit is set, twice a week during the first three weeks. Pick up and de stroy tho fallen fruit. Farmers and Fruit Grow edy for Insects. For slag, apply Paris green in liquid form when the insect appeaia , i repeat within ten days. For the San Jose seale, apply same inneoticide as recommended for apple. Cuoumber and Squash-For squash bug apply Bordeaux mixtm to the young plant ; should inseota appear, apply kerosene emulsion ; repeat in a few days if neofrsary. In small patches it ia praoticabie to piok by h'm ', the adults, when they first ap. pear. For squash vine borer, no insecti cide can be used. Barn old vine?. For aphis and leaf-eating beetles, apply same insecticides as recom mended for thc cantaloupe. Egg Plant-For Colorado potato beetle, apply Paris green in liquid form or dry as soon as tho adult in sects appear ; repeat ten days later. For flea beetles, apply Bordeaux mixture to young plants ; when the insects appear apply Pariu green in liquid form ; repeat within ten dayB. Grapo-For flea beetle, apply Bor deaux mixture as soon as buds open ; apply Paris green in liquid form or ?iisenate of lead when the insect ap pears ; repeat ten days later. For slug, apply same insecticide as recommended for cherry. For leaf folder, apply Paris green in liquid form or arsenate of lead a? soon as insects appear ; repeat before the loaves are folded. Peach-For black aphis, apply same insecticide aa recommended for apple. For tho borer, wrap the trunk of tree, not later than September 15, I with newspaper or brown paper. This covering should extend to the height of 18 inches from the ground. It should be fastened at the top with a stout string, and should be banked at the bottom with earth to the height of ten inches. Upon remov ing the covering, which may be done at any time during the winter, a search should be made for the borers. When found, they should be killod in their burrows with a wire probe. As a repellent to the moth that ap pears in May, apply to the trunk of tree a thick coat of the lime and sul phur wash. This wash should be ap plied with a large brush and not later than April 15. For the curculio, apply same insect icide and treatment as recommended for cherry. For twig borer, apply the lime and sulphur wash during Deoember; as the buds are opening, apply the Bor deaux mixture, containing either Paris green or arsenate of lead. For San Jose scale, apply same in secticide as recommended for apple. For the other scale insects, apply the lime and sulphur wash during the winter ; when fruit is half grown, ap ply kerosene emulsion. For shot-hole borer, destroy in winter the dead and dying trees by burning. Collect and destroy by fire all limbs that fall to the ground. Remove and burn infested limbs as soon as they are discovered. Pecan-For bud worm, apply Paris green in liquid form or arsenate of lead when the buds open ; repeat ten days later. Pear-For codling moth, apply same insecticide as recommended for apple. For the slug, apply same insecti cide as recommended for cherry. For San Jose scale, apply same in secticide as recommended for apple. For aphis, apply same insecticide as recommended for apple. Plum-For curculio, apply sarao insecticide and treatment as recom mended for cherry. For the San Jose scale, apply same insecticide as recommended for ap ple. For tho Leoanium scalo apply kerosene emulsion to tho limbs dur ing the wenter. For tho shot-hole borer, apply same treatment as recommended for tho peach. Potato-For Colorado potato bee tlo and blister beetles, apply Paris green in liquid form or dry as soon astin, adult insects appear; repeat ten days later ; repoat ?. very five days until the insect is brought under control. For flea beetle, apply same insecti cide aa reconuneuded for egg plant. ' Quince-For the slug, apply same treatment as recommended for cherry. Raspberry, Blackberry and Dew berry-For the rose seale, apply kerosene emulsion during February. Before spraying, out aud burn the canes that are badly infested. For the San Jose scale, apply the insecticide as recommended for ap ple. For slug, apply kerosene emulsion or whale oil soap as soon as the in sects appear; repeat in five days if necessary ; do not spray while plants are in fruit. Rose-For aphis, apply tobacco as a liquid spray as soon aa the inseots appear ; repeal if necessary. For slug, apply kerosene emulsion, whale oil soap or arsenate of lead as soon as inseots appear ; repeat every five days until ic oct s are brought under control. For the rose soale and San Jose seale, apply insecticides as recom mended for raspberry. Strawberry-For strawberry wee vil, use varieties of plants that are imperfect bloomers. ID localities that are infested, perfect bloomers should only be used for a trap orop. As soon as the trap orop is fully sot, cover the plants with dry straw and burn. For strawberry root-borer, plow up old beds and destroy by fire as soon as fruit is picked. Whorover two-year piokiug rotation is practiced this insect never becomes a serious pest. Tomato-For flea beetles, apply samo insecticide as recommended for potato. For tomato caterpillar and fruit caterpillar, apply Paris green in liquid form or dry or arseuato of lead when insects appear ; repeat one weok later if necessary. Letter to Joe Todd, Walhalla,.SJ C. Lot a man paint two houses alike, same size; one Devoe, the other that $1.50 paint. Ile buys ten gallons of eaoh and pays $3 a day for labor-$3 a day is $3 a gallon, easior reckoning. Ile has to buy two gallons more of the $1.50 paint, and has two gallons left of Devoe; 12 gallons $1.50, $18; 8 gallons $1.75, $14 ; $4 more for "cheap" paint. He pays $3 a gallon for painting; 8gal lons $24; 12 gallons $36; $12 moro for painting "ohoap" paint. He'll buy the less-gallonB*?paint after that. Now York, May 4.-It is author itatively stated that John I'ierepont Morgan, famous financier, intends to retire from activo business. His duties will bo assumed by his son. Mr. Morgan celebrated the seventieth anniversary of his birth on April 17th. Ho was born in Hartford, Conn., in 1837. He graduated from tho English High School at Boston and afterwards studied at the Uni versity of Goettingen, Germany. For many years Mr. Morgan has been a leading figure in the linancial affairs of tho United States and of world. He is at present traveling in Europo. For years he ha? been a great art collector. Blue Ridge Bonds Cats in Court washington, April 25.-Henry A. M. Smith, of Charleston, receiver for the State bank, ?ow defunct, is Still try lute to nrevent State Treasurer .Tanning* from exeouting the order to write $37,000 of old Blue Ridge Railroad bonds off the books of the State of South Carolins, The oase was argued to-day before the United States Supreme Court on an ap peal from the Supreme Court of South Carolina, wbioh refused tc issue tho in junction. T. W. Baoot, of Charleston, represented the petitioner and receiver, and Chas. A. Douglass and E. B. 8berrill represented tho H ta to of South Carolina. The bonds in question are not, to be confused with the- hoted Blue Ridge script bonds, which wo*e repudiated. In 1854 South Carolina issued $1,000,000 in bonds of a thousand dollars each for the aid of the Blue Bidge railroad. The State bank, in Columbia, became the owner of 100 of thean toonda, all of wbioh, in 1865, Sherman's army took and carried away. Some of tho bonds were recov ered by the bank * 4 paid. A receiver was appointed ia 1810 to take charge of the af ai rn of the bank and an act passed that none of the bonds should be paid exoept to this receiver. The receiver got hold of al) the bonds but 37 and they wore paid by tho State. These out standing bonds matured July 1, 1870, but up to 1800 tboy bad not been found and the General Assombly passed an act that after 20 years from the dato of ma turity no bonds should be paid. But those 37 bonds, worth $37,000, remained on the books of the State Treasurer as dobt against tbo State. In 1002 tho (?ene ra! Assembly passed a resolution order ing tbo treasurer to write this dobt off tho books. It was to prevent this that Henry A. M. Smith, roceivor for the State bank, ? . keil for an injunction and it was to-day plaood boforo the Supreme Court of tho United States to decide. lt KRUI NI!
