LAHMER HHS JEN TO NEVADA. TELLS A WASHINGTON REPORTER OF SOME OF THE GOLD MINES HE SAW. f Washington Horald.] The Hon. A. C. Latimer, undem onstrative but UH o fwl junior Senator from South Carolina, told a Herald reporter at the New Willard last evening some interesting things about a trip to the Nevada raining cu mps, from which he had just re turned. His western tour also in cluded Los Angeles and San Fran cisco. "The great wealth of the mines in the Goldfield and Tonopah Districts," said Senator Latimer, ubas not been the subject of exaggerated reports. All I saw out there produced in my mind the impression that the half has not been told concerning the riches of that remarkable region. Men talk as coolly out there of mil lions as we do of thousands here, and it is not idle conversation or braggadocio. Too many of them have made good in the accumulation of fortunes for the talk to be classed as ?pipe dreams.' A year ago Sena tor Nixon aud his partner, Mr. Wingfield, joined a third man who had started a bank on a $50,000 capital. At present the bank has deposits aggregating $7,600,000 and its stock has* a value of ten to one. Of course Senator Nixon and Wing field are the men we bear most of, but there aro others who have made large fortunes nineo the camps first got the attention of the outside world. If I were out of publio office and wanted to make big money fast I would not hesitate to try my luck in these Nevada camps, for they present the greatest opportu nities, in my judgment, that are to , be found anywhere. "Despite the faot that a big strike was on during my stay in Goldfield, the town was as lively and full of business activity as though there was no disturbance of conditions. Every body out there seems well supplied with money and everybody is mak ing money. The landlady of the best hotel in town, a wooden struc ture of forty rooms, told me that she paid $500 a month rent and wondered why it was not $1,000. The rooms were very small-not much over 8 x 10, but they were in demand at $2.50 to $3 per night, and you had to wire ahead to get quarters. Every other house in the place seemed a saloon and gambling was in full blast, the rattle of the ohips being audible from the street, there boing no pretence of conceal ment. "But though a wide open town, Goldfield is by no means given over to toughs or sports. I met scores of well-dressed, well-educated, respecta ble mon, who aro ont there to make money-not to dissipate. The popu lation, notwithstanding the large sporting contingent, is law-abiding aud decorus in its observation of the decencies of civilization. At a club to which I was invited a large num ber of men wero in evening dress, and they showed in every way to be citizens of solid worth and high busi ness integrity." m Spring winds ohap, tan and oauso freckles to appear. lMnesalvoCarbolized applied at night will relieve that burning sensation. Columbia, May 2.-Columbia has another murder mystery on her hands, with not the slightest olue to work on. R. T. Woacott, 45 years old, who conducts a meat market at 1508 Taylor street and resides in Waverly suburb, was shot through the left temple at 5 o'clock this morning as he was passing around the corner of a school house, two blocks from his home, on his way to his store. His 16-year-old son stum bled over the oorpse as he passed along half an hour later. Neighbors heard one shot fired. It was Wes oott's custom to carry bis money in a shot bag between his store and his residence with his revolver in his hands. His weapon was found lying by his side unfired. It is not known how much money he oarried this morning, but only sixty cents was found in the shot bag, and his dia mond ring had been slipped from his finger. Well trained hounds from the penitentiary would follow tho murderer's tracks only a few feet, a large orowd having gathered on the scene by that time. About 50 hold ups and robberies and seve?al mys terious murders, occurring within a year in the city and suburbs, with the police and county authorities unable to stop the epidemic, have intensified the excitement.
