Columbia, Maroh 22.-A "nervy*' hold up bf a plucky Ohio man by two negro highwaymen occurred at an early hour this morning almost directly under an nrn light, as tue victim wfi walbing through Asaembly street toward the union station from the oity hotel on Maia street. The victim was M. M. Hamel re th, an attorney of Long Run, Ohio, who had stopped hero on his way home from Florida and Qeorgia, where he had been on business for three months. siter asking Ramelreth for a match ono negro col I ar wi and threw him to the ground, while the other not only rifled hi? pockets, in whioh he found $37 in oash, but stole Hamelreth's coat, oap and shoe?. This morning the treachery of a negro woman resulted <n the arrest of a negro named Sam Wilson, who was caught wearing Hamelreth's coat and oap. There was evidence that Hamel reth put up a game fight at the time he was arrested, and he ohased the negroes ont of Hight after they let bim up. When flamelroth confronted Wilson at police station he immediately identified him and attacked him. The police inter fered. The police think they have the other negro located and will arrest him shortly. There have been over a soore of suoh hold-ups in this oity within tho year, but practically all of them have been done by white men, though on several occasions negroes have found easy viot'ms, the police department being in a disorgan ized condition. Over 1,000 shot? wore fired. The negro was captured to-daj half a milo below town and was taken before Mrs. Rico, who fainted at sight of him. Upon re covering she tully identified her assail ant and on being asked what should be done with him, told the negro's captors to do as they thought best. Harding was taken a short distance from the Rice homo, whero a conference of tho mob leaders was hold.- Some said burn him, but shooting was decided on.
