Moultrie, Qa., Maroh 7.-Five ne groes, employees of the Union Pin opolis Saw Mills, were killed in a wreok near the Sunset Mill this morning and many others are seri ously injured. The train, consisting of flat oars, was baoking out and the negroes were on the front oar. A white tree had burned across the track in a sandy plaoe and was not noticed until too late to prevent the very disastrous wreck. Several white men were on the engine, but none were injured. Several of those injured, it is thought, will die. There were sixty men on the wreoked train and the faot that the list of fatalities was not greater is all but marvelous. The survivors at onoe set to work rescu ing the dead and injured from the wreok. In using a cough syrup, why not get the best? I oullus charmed the most oritioal taste of Rome with ul* hams and the old Saxons learned the method from the Homans, carrying their knowledge with them to Eng land, and in the coarse of time send ing with their best blood across the ocean. In thia country Virginia has long boasted of having the finest bama that money and taste could produce, some of them being kept for 25 years before being eaten. That they cure a fine ham goes without saying? for. except for a painful ignorance of the virtuos of rice and how to cook it, the Virginians are a highly civilized people. There are certainly more ways than one to euro a ham, although I have not been attracted by the Ger man method of boring into the bone and patting in saltpetre, nor by the Holland custom of oaring hams in the ashes, nor by the paoking boase way of evaporating them. These things have their uses and the paoking house would hardly be able to pursue the method in vogue among South Carolina's most highly educated farmers. Too much time is required for this. My father, Hon. James H. Rice, at Ninety-Six, has given me the following receipt, which is the reBult of his 40 years' experience in curing fine hams. 'There are modifications, of course, and there are* other good met hods, which ought to be published also for the information of the pub lic. Suoh information would do vast good. I might take an aside just long enough to say that the hog alone possesses a ham-true, one speaks of venison hams, but this is a figure of speeoh, mere poetio license. The razorbaok has only a hind leg, not a ham. Of all hams the Berkshire leads in this country. Other strains find favor in Ireland, England, Ger many and Franoe. COL. RICK'S RECEIPT. After hogs are killed out off thc bends (split heads and take out braim at once). Take out the backbone and spread meat on floor of smoke house (ground floor) with paper a nc cloth \imUr it for the first night Sprinkle oalt freely over meat. Next day out up. Rub a teas poonful of saltpetre on eaoh joint then rab thoroughly with salt anc paok in box or trough very olosely It ia well to pot a good weight ovei the ti oat to make it lie dose, spread ing first a good strong doth over th< meat. In 21 days, if the weather is clear take meat out of box and hang up hocks down. Smoke freely witt hiokory smoke. Spriukle red peppei t werai times over the fire. Som? people rub a teaspoonful of bora over each joint when they hang up Next make a large pot of strong re< pepper tea and dip each joint in it while boiling, to kill insects befon hanging up. After dipping joints in red peppe tea, /nb with black pepper, mad stioky with molasses. Then wrap ii olote wrapping paper, tie wit! strings, put in sacks and hang up. This ham roaches perfection afte it is three years old, although i makes a very fine ham at one year. It is hoped tba this informatioi may lead to ac improved oonntr ham all over tte State ; and it i also hoped that others may send ii their own receipts for oaring hams t add value to a rioh subject. There are in the Thorn well Or phanage, located at Clinton, S. C., 240 orphan boys and girls, in process ot securing an ?ducation. These boys and girls are of all ages, from sir. years of age up to 17 or 18. The older pupils, by their zealous labore, help to support and care for the young, putting in each day four to six hours of steady work in the shops and farms and kitchen and about the same time daily os their books. In this way the cost of oaring for the whole family is lessened by many thousands of dollars. But the great majority of the children are very small, only a oars instead of a help and must be aided in every way. The support of these children rests upon good men and women who love the orphans and freely aid them. Just at present there is special need ; of assistance and every gift, be it of provisions or of money, will be promptly acknowledged. Every de nomination in the State is repre sented among tue children, but the I institution is under Presbyterian control. * All gifts should be sent to Rev. Wm. P. Jaoobs, Clinton, S. C. C., Msroh 9.-"They gave me money to lure Lawrenoe to the place to kill him," testified Omey Greer, a fifteen-year-old mountain girl, in the trial of John Vicker? and Hamp Kendall for tho murder of Lawrence Nelson last November, in the mountains, four or five miles ! from this plaoe. Miss Greer was put on the witness stand by the State, and testified that she and a friend of hers were with Vicker? and Kendall the night of the murder ; that Kendall and Vick er? had given her money to lure Law renoe Nelson, of whom Vickers and Kendall were jealous, to a camp fire in the mountain.-, where Kendall and Vickers were. She said she ran away and presently heard a shot fired. See also stated that Vickers and Kendall told her that if she ever mentioned what occurred that night they would kill her, too. All the ovidenoe that had been brought out in the trial against Vick ers sud Kendall, that has consumed four or five days, has been circum stantial. Nelson was shot to death in the mountains. Ten weeks passed before his body was recovered. Both accused men swore that they had not been on the scene where the mur der was committed, and knew noth ing of the crime. Kendall and Vick ers were the men last seen with Nelson. Every one knows that spring is the sea son of the year when the system needs oleansing. Dade's Little Liver Pills are highly recommended.
