mm UNION BUREAU. Lott. Ou account of tho abolition of buoket bbc ps by law in several of the cotton States, four New York ootton exohaagos have reoeutly bursted and another large ootton exchange that did a business of $38,000 in 1006 per month did a busiuess of only $5,000 per month in 1006. Now we want every county in South Carolina to oall a meeting at onoe of farmers and others and de mand that our present Legislature abolish both the lien law and ootton jMrianges in this State. Both these v8|rm league together to rob the South of its profits iu her colton .orops This Corporation Won and Saved Money. In early fall myself and other long staple cotton growers tried the mills and buyers to sell our oottou, but could not get our prices until after thc long staple ootton growers of South Georgia and South Carolina - and others got together and agreed to bold until fair prices could be had. Before this meeting was held some gol tired out, some selling at 10^ cents and Borne at ll oents. Some of the mills in tho eurly season olaimed that they could not use our cotton, but are now glad to get it at an advance ol' from 5 to M cents per _^^>ouud. All this was the result of the strong det?;riuination and co operation with the long staple cotton growers. This gain of 825 per bale, brought about by intelligent co-operation by tho growers, should point out a prece, dent to guido other cotton growers, who- could easily have gotten 12 cents per pound for all good mid dling cotton tili-? year just as easy as the long staple growers cjot their prices. We aro feeling good over tho success of our long staple cotton growers. The lien law is an arm of the Now York cotton exchange and in turn the New York cotton exchange holds the mortgaged cotton farmer in leash, ns the hunter bolds his hounds. Knock out of the South the lien law and the New York cotton ex change shops, then cotton growing and cotton marketing can be placed in the hands of intelligent men, which will make it easy to oonduot the whole ootton business in a busi ness-like way to the greatest interest and profit of the whole South. Mr. Heddon, a noted banker of Atlanta, in his address beforo the 1 "xnkers' Association at St. Louis, said in part as follows : "British oapitalists furnish New York agents with money to lend to Southern merchants to advance sup plies to Southern farmers." "The farmers produce the cotton, and before it wan harvested the mortgage that rested upon it from the timo the seed went into the ground, was hurrying it on to thc U Britishers who furnished the money f for its production." Cotton farmers about this time of The Farmer's Wife Is vory caroful about hor churn. 8ho scalds it thoroughly after using, and gives it a sun bath to sweeten it. Tht South Should Plant less liens on orops and fewer gam bling houses and eotton exchanges, and inaugurate more corn oongresses and ?ne stock shows. Rook Hill's-manly and pluoky mayor, Mr. Rodney, says: "The New York ootton exchange is not only a great fraud, but a groat farce on its face, and the only "I)unco" game allowed iu the United States, where a man pretends to seil some thing and uot allow his customer to know what he is buying. It is prac tically the same as going into a Btore and saying, 'I will buy a suit of clothes, basis $20,' but at the same time the seller not even allowing you to know whether you receive a ?3.75 suit or a $50 one. The nerve of it and the ignoranoe of the South so long is quite disgusting. Of course they should be wiped out of exist ence or the Louisiana State lottery, gambling houses and all bunco games be allowed. It is indeed a pleasure to see the South becoming educated, for this ourse has cost the South more than the civil war." People don't pay ?890,000 for a Beat in'the New York cotton exohange for the fun of it. This faot should bo reason enough for any legislator to vote all such evil doers ont.
