Meridian, Miss., Jan. 10.-The Ala bama Great Southern passenger train No. 1, bad a narrow escape from being) wrecked and crushed by a giant pine in tho swamps between Akron and Eutaw, at 3 o'clock this morning. As it was, the res ni ts were serious enough. . From a passenger on tho train it was learned that shortly after leaving Akron, while going at a speed of 35 miles an hour, a tree fell upon the train. Much damago was done. The sido of one | coach was torn almost completely away and two others were badly damaged. Conductor Sam Park, a Mrs. Johnson, of Minneola, Texas, and two other pas-1 sengers were injured. Their wounds! wore indicted by projecting limbs and flying particles of glass. Had it not bouu for the extremo width of the right of way at the point whore tho tree fell ita body, instead of limbs, would have fallon across the train and thereby have produced, beyond a doubt, motlier shocking catastrophe. Change In Well-Known Firm al Seneca. Ono of tho most important changes in Soneca's morcantilo world is the dissolu tion of tho well-known, old reliablo firm of J. W. Byrd A Co. Mr. Byrd has .bought tho cntiro interest of J. Q. Adams, in the firm, and ?ill hereafter conduct tlie business alone. Mr. Byrd "grow up" in Seneca* from a clerkship to tho hoad of ono of tho most solid, re liablo business houses in upper Carolina. Tho namo, "J, W. Byrd," has been a synonym for honesty, reliability and sipiaro dealing. Enterprising along le gitimate hues, yet clinging with cour ageous tenacity to all that is best in tho .old business methods of tho past, we ?rodlet for him an enviable business, lr. Adams, tho retiring member, is a well-known, highly esteemed young business man. Solid, substantial; and the faot that ho docs not leave Seneca is A matter of gratification to his business associates and friends generally. We wish them both unbounded success. Farm and Factory, January 11th. M?HERS IN PREMIE CHAMBER. COMPULSORY EDUCATION AND 10-HOUR LABOR BILLS ARE UP AGAIN. Columbia, Jan. 15.-- Editora Courier: The brat week of the session of tho General Assembly is goue and very little work dune. The weather has been unusually favor able; in fact, I do not think that we have ever bad a prettier week during a ses sion. We have not needed any fire yet. If it should oontinue for a month as warm aa lt ls the trees would be putting out. The warm weather has tended to relieve the coal famine more than my* thing. I went through the penitentiary the other day and spoke to thoae convicts from Ooonee county. They are all In good health; and not more disssatisned tbau would be expected. The Beard of Pardons recommended tb? full pardon of W. K. Powers a few days ago, and the Governor has signed the pardon. There have been more bills introduced for the time than usual. The SolioPora have been very hard worked to wait on tue members. I have introduced a bill providing for the use of stenographers and typewriters for writing bills and acts, which will facilitate the work ot that department and reduoe the cost at least one-half. The paper that is now used for enrolling acts is 20x28 inohes and is very unwieldy, and no better than that used for ordinary documents. Besides, it is inconvenient and diffloult to keep aa a record. AU cases ?re made fe? the usual document size paper and cannot, be used. There have been about fifteen or twenty bills introduoed to stop the deal ing in futures of agriooltural products. There seems to bea spontaneous demand throughout thc State that this mothod of gambling be stopped. I bad prepared a measure on this line, but there have been so many others that I will support some of them and not offer any. The 10-hour bill for laborers in facto ries is in and will likely olaim a >;ood deal of the time of the aession. Thia measure ia introduced every yoar in some form and brings in a large representation of the mill people on either Bide. The compulsory education bill ia also on its way, but it is in a milder form than heretofore. It requin s children to be Bent to school for at least twelve weeks in a soholastio year. The annual fight to repeal tho lien law will come up in a few days. Hills have been inti od need in both houses for this purpose. This law was a great disad vantage to land-owners when it was put in force on ?"oount of the radical changes that it made in tho nettled methods of doing business, but it baa now been in force for about forty years, and rendi tions have adjusted themselves to tho law. Besides, it would do little or no good to repeal the lieu law and leave the mortgago law as it now is. The seizures under mortgages might bo moro oppres sive than under the lien. I have introduced a bill providing for tho inspection of oils that are sold for lighting purposes. It is strange that almost every ??tate has some kind of in spection law to provont the sale of oil unlit for use in lamps. The rejected oil from the other states around us may be dumped here with impunity.. We ought to have some means of protection. A bill baa been iutroduoed requiring tho publication of the names of persons to whom railroad passes were isauod. The law at present forbids the use of free passes by officers, and it is rumored that many of the office rs are disregard ing this law. The inauguration of Hon. M. F. Ansel as Governor takes place to-day at 12 m Ooonee ls peculiarly interested in this a? be is a native of our county ?nd a man of whom no evil can be said. It is ex tremely sad that our fellow-towuaman and brother was not spared the pleasure of seeing bim inducted into office. He looked forward to that time with great anxiety and often expressed his inten tion of being present. His life has proven his faith ?nd be has reaped the reward of the Just.
