Over 700 Applications at Clemson. Clemson College, September 17.-The annual session of Clemson College for 1000-7, the fourteenth year of the institu tion, opened Wednesday. Nearly 700 applications for admission have boon ac cepted, which means that, making al lowances for the OUOB who do not come after applying, and for the return home of some who do not succeed in passing the examinations, there will be au at tendance when the work of the session gots under way of about 630 students, the full capacity of the institution. Of the total number accepted 428 are old students, which is a larger propor tion than fm mci ly. Tho present senior and junior classes are the largest in the history of the collego, and the prospects aro that noxt Juue will see the largest graduating olass ever turned out from (Memsen. The class of 1003 and the class of 1900, each numbering 60 men, have been the largest so far. Besides those accepted, 240 applicants have been refused admission for this session ou account of iaok of dormitory and other accommodations, 180 from this Stato and 60 from other States. Nothing shows better than do these figures the need of tho now dormitory, which the board of trustees have already author ized, and which will be furnished in time for the opening of the session beginning in September, '007. Entrance examinations for new stu dents and "make-up" examinations for old students who were renditioned last year, began this morling and will con tinue through the week. All other stu dents begin regular class work at once. The full teaching foroe is on hand, those who had been away for the sum mer or a part of it having returned dur ing the last ten days. J. L. Woodruff, a graduate in tho class of 1906, has won by civil service com petitivo examination a nattering position as assistant civil eugineer in the War De partment for the Philippines, and will shortly leave to take np ula work there. Prof. Brodie, of tho department of mathematics and civil engineering, says that lie is having many requests from various sources for Clemson men. Four Crazy Negroes Raise Riot. Greenville, September 14.-.Suffering from emotional insanity, superinduced, it is holieved, by religion, four of the host negroes in Anderson county late yesterday afternoon becamo violent, pulled one white man from his horse and forced him to Mee for his lifo, wan tonly destroyed a mail box belonging to n white man, stoned the whito mau and his wife when they offered resistance and fl ii ul 1 y barricaded themselves in their cottages, whero they sturdily resisted all efforts made to arrest thom until yester day morning. Ono of the four negroes was shot v. inle in tho house and died f'esterday. The other three havo been odged in the jail in Anderson. Heed Anderson, sixty-flvo years old. William Anderson, K.isio Anderson and Aaron Anderson, all of the samo family, wore the four negroes. They together own more than two hundred acres of tine farming land and aro generally regarded as th? most respectable nogroes in the county. All four of thom became vio lently insano Tuosday evening and met Talmage Morriu, who was pulled from his horse and forced to Ileo for his life. Lr*er tho negroes wont down the road and came to the place of James Long and tore down his mail box. When Mr. and Mrs. Long orderod thom away they stoned the farmer, and his wife was out by the Hying missiles. Th ? negroes were captured end tied, but t^/jy broke away and weut to their oottage, where they barricaded the doors. A large crowd of white people gathered about the house and waited outside, it being evident that the orazed negroes were armed. I )-. W. A. Tripp, boping to administer some sleeping potion, finally gaiued ad mittance, but was shot in the face aud hurled through the door. He is not seri ously burt. Finally Sheriff Scott, of Anderson county, was admitted by the negroes and the maniacs were handcuffed. Reed An derson was shot in the melee and will die. Mrs. Long was not seriously burt by the rocks. The affair oreated excitement, but there were no efforts made at lynching, as the negroes were very favorably known, and it was easily seen that their reason had been dethroned. First Heavy Frost.
