Lemon, of the War*Department, who is located at Savannah, spent several days here last week investigating the olaims that tho Savannah, Tugaloo and Seneca rivers are navigable. He did not say what action he thought the department would take upon the receipt of his report, hut ho in timated that tho only way to make the Savannah river navigable would be to put in a system of looks from Augusta up. Ho did not think that the govern ment would interfere with the building of the big dam of the Savannah River Power Company, except that it might ho found that some provision should be made for putting in locks in case the river was found to be navigable. Laurens, AuguBt 28.-Joe Koon and John Golden, two young white men, were killed by a bolt of lightning four miles beyond Cross Hill last Wodnesday aftornoou. They were seated in front of the fireplace In Golden's house. Simpson's reply will be as vig orous as was Mr. Stabling's artiolo. An engineer and fireman were killed at Ensley, Ala., Friday, by the explosion of a locomotivo boiler. Miss Jj Jessie Dobbins left on No. 30 Saturday for Charlotte to resume her studies in the Presbyterian college of that oity. Hated Carter, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Carter, is at home from the Southern Busiuess College of Atlanta. Cleveland Trice and Claude Gaines, of Seneca, were in town Thursday evening and attended the party given by the Misses Brown. Mr. Trioe is a native of Thomaston, Ga. Miss Mary Messer returned Friday from Atlanta and Lavonia. One of the most enjoyable events of the season was the party given by the Misses Harris at their home in the East ond on last Tuesday evening. The Misses Harris aro charming entertainers. Many parlor games were played and re freshments were served. Thirty odd guests were present. S. W. Dickson has begun the ereotion of his briok store room. It is 25x100 feet. North and South Carolina. They took 1 in Whitewater Falls, Lake Tozaway, Sapphire and other places of interest. Besides enjoying the mountain breezes they hunted and fished, but it was not recorded how much game they oaptured. Misses Sue and Maria Dendy, of Rich land, and Sudle Jones, of Madison, and J. H. Dendy, of Richland, were among the visitors here Saturday. The Matheson Hardware Company and Carter's Pharmaoy have exchanged store rooms. L. P. Smith visited his father and family near Gainesville last week. A meeting will begin at Oak Grove next Sabbath. Rev. J. J. Darrell will be assisted by Rev. John G. Law, of Wal halla. Misses Maude Zachary and Cordelia Bearden, two charming ladies of the Oakway section, have been visiting here several days as the guests of the Misses Brown and others. The attendance at the campaign moot ing held here Thursday, 23d instant, was rather small. J. L. Dorn visited relatives in Edge field oounty this week. Rev. W. J. Wyly, of Georgetown, who with his family are spending a month in Coonee, preached a very impressive and forcible sermon in the Presbyterian church yesterday. Rev. J. J. Harrell left on No. 30 tim. morning for Honea Path, where he goes to assist Rev. W. L. Boggs in a meeting. Mrs. Eliza Norris, of Anderson, is vis iting relatives in this seotion. Mrs. Alethia Ballenger is spending a while with T. W. Ballenger. Rev. and Mrs. H. L. Singleton have returned to 1 lorry county after a visit of several weeks to the up-country. Mr. Singleton is a Methodist minister of the South Carolina conference aud resides at Buckaville. A large crowd from here attended the all-day singing at Hopewell yesterday. Marsball shot and killed Lewis Gray, a negro, for the crime for whioh negroes are lynched. Yesterday afternoon, while Mr. Mar shall was away from his house, the negro, Gray, oame to the house and made an indecent proposal to Mrs. Marshall. Before ho' could make any attempt to carry out his purpose be was frightened away by Mrs. Marshall's mother, who appeared from a not her room in the house when her daughter screamed. The negro fled. Marshall, who was at work in the field, ae soon as he reached home and learned the facts, secured his shotgun and started out on a hunt for the negro. Ho hunted the country over all night and about day break went into the store of H. B. Mo Call to vest. While in the store Lewis Gray walked in, not knowing that Mar shall was there. Marsball, without a word, fired and killed the negro in stantly. Marsball left the store, intending to come to Florence and surrender. He came to town, ft is said, but did not give himself up and is still at large. Marshall's homo is on the plantation of J. S. McCall, near Effingham. His wife is a woman of about 27 years of age and her mother lives with them. The negro was an itinerant barber, who was well known in that section, whioh is about ten miles from Florence town. A freight train orashed into a work train on the Pennsylvania Railroad, near Johnstown, last Saturday. Seven per sons were killed and several were more or less injured.
