Spence, of Deese, India, in a communication to the London Commercial Intelli gencer. Mr. Spence claims to have discov ered and propagated a tree that will produce annually from five to ten pounds of clean ootton, superior both in classification and staple to the Amerioan ootton, and equal in classi fication to Egyptiau ootton. He farther asserts that he has planted more than 8,200 trees to the aore. Even the first year's yield from the young trees, says Mr. Spence, averages from 400 to 800 pounds per acre, which is above the average of Egypt. In commenting upon the cotton tree, Mr. Spence is quoted as saying : "It is an astonishing faot that the value of this tree's produot has not up to this tim? been discovered by any one in the cotton trade, notwith standing the faot that the tree has been known to exist since tht time of the mutiny, and probably for hun dreds of years previously. The only uses to which the ootton which it produces has so far been put are the manufacture of wicks for lamps in Hindu temples and the studing of beds and pillows. After carefully examining it, I unhesitatingly ex press the opinion that it possibly would ultimately revolutionize the ootton cultivation of India. "I sent samples to Bombay and Liverpool, where experts in the for mer city classed it as 'lino,' white in oolor, staple \\ to l.j inches long, and said it would spin up to CD's. In the latter oity it was ol&ssed Super fine' color, white staple, 1 8-16 to 1? inches in length, and valued at 7 to sd per pound above the price of 'middling' Amerioan. "It will bo seen that if one-third the cotton growing area of India were planted with this tree, the re. suit of the second year would be a orop far in excess of that of this country and Amerioa put together." "Whiskey ls Hell I" The following is taken from the Associated Press report of the de bato on the "pure food" bill in the House of Representatives : Mr. Stanley, of Kentucky, went on to demonstrate how the "blender" makes "blended" whiskey. He had no objection to any body blending two kinds of whiskey, but be did object to making whiskey while ypu ] wait. Then taking a bottle from the table he poured it into a graduate and said : "Here is a quart of alcohol, one hundred proof strong. It will eat the intestine's out of a coyote. It will make a bowling dervish out of an anchorite. It will mako a rabbit spit in a bull dog's face, lt is pure alcohol, and under the skill of the rectifier he will put in a little color ing matter and then a little bead of oil (illustrating). I drop that in it. Thon I get a little essence of Bour bon whiskey and there is no connois seur in this house who can tell that] hellish business from the genuine article, and that is what I denounce. (Applause.) I say that the coloring tn au ci is not harmful ; 1 say that the caramels are not harmful, but I say that the bouy stook of the whiskey I made is rank alcohol, and when it| gets into a man it is hell." Atlanta, July 19.-Claiming to be the victim of the hypnotic art of her sweetheart in South Carolina, Miss Ella Hyde, a pretty young lady of Greenville, S. C., is now in the Grady Hospital iu a semi-conscious condi tion. Ou ber entire family sickness has laid a heavy band, her brother b?-int? at the present time a prisoner in the police station of this oity the victim of some kind ot drug ; her father is with an inourable disease in a hospital in Columbia, S. C., and the mother is in Atlanta, where she oame to find her daughter and son. Miss Hyde was brought to Atlanta Monday night from Greenville, and was unconscious when she reaohed the oity. She was immediately taken to the Grady Hospital, and though everything possible was done to re* store har to consciousness, she gave little response to their efforts until early yesterday morning, when she informed her nurse that she was in a hypnotized condition ; that she is in constant telepathic communication with her hypnotizer, who is her sweetheart, Watt Ward, of Green ville. Her statement is confirmed by her brother, John Hyde, who is now at police station, having been brought there in a cac Monday night while in a semi-conscious condition. It is believed that he is suffering from some kind of a drug. "There was a little old churob on the outskirts of Philadelphia that had an old olergyman who was noted for the dryness of his sermons. "It is said that one Sunday morn ing the old gentleman preached a sermon so amazingly long and dull that the congregation diminished one by one until only the janitor and himself were left. "Hut the clergyman, apparently unconscious of all this, kept right on until the janitor, seeing no prospeot of relief, finally gave in also, and, handing up the keys to the minister, said : M 'I'm off. You can look up the church when you'ro through.'" Fool Impending Doom. Spartaoburg, July 19.-A severe storm, accompanied by lightning, passed over the county Tuesday afternoon. The damage occasioned hy the wind was slight, but three deaths are reported to lfhve occurred in the county. At Enoree a negro, whose name cannot W ascertained, as telephone wires are working badly, was struck and instantly killed. The clothing was almost entirely torn from the body. At Cross Keys, near Cross Anchor, a farmer by the name of Briggs was instantly killed. Briggs was well known in his seotiou, being an ex tensive planter and a good citizen. A telephone message from Wood ruff states that a negro boy, Nix, was killed in the same manner, near Hi?sville. D., July 21.--For nomo unknown reason the steamboat North Alabama, which struck a snag and sunk in 1870, six miles be low here, euddenly reappeared on the surface of the Missouri river last evening, and to-day hundreds of peo ple are viewing the spectacle. The boat was bound from Sioux City to the Yellowstone district, loaded with Hour and whiskey, when it sank. It is supposed a ohange in the current washed away earth deposited above and around the boat, allowing it to rise again. There were fifty barrels of whiskey aboard, and already a hunt has begun to locate the liquor, which bas had thirty years of ripen ing. Owing to the fact that mud and sand have filled up much of the interior of the boat it has been im possible to get at the whiskey as yet. Last year the produot of our 39, 000,000 acres of hay fields and mea dows was 60,531,017 tons of hay, having a value to the farmers of $516,000,000 in round numbers, says Farming. Is this sufficient cause to congratulate ourselves? Let us look a little farther into the dry subject of statistics. Through the greatest producing States it was considered a good year. The average yield was one a I one-half tons per aore and the average price $8.50 a ton. Com parisons between widely separated States cannot be fairly made. For instance, the high average prioe of $16 per ton in Rhode Island is not due to the superiority of the hay there, but the fact that the local sup ply satisfies but a small fraction of the market demand ; whereas, the low average price of $4 per ton in South Dakota docs not indicate in ferior hay, but that the local market is so fully supplied that the price falls nearly, if not quite, to the actual cost of production. All this is very good for averages, but what is more to the point is how much does it oost to produce a ton of good hay in the various States, and how may we improve the quality and in crease the profits ? The killing of Stanford White, the well known architect, by Harry Kendall Thaw, the young millionaire, at Madison Square roof garden re cently promises to lead to a sensa tional moral shake up, the like of whioh has not been known in New York for a great many years. The papers bave been printing pages about the matter and there are a great many more pages yet to come. As the situation now appears from Thaw's side, White had betrayed Mr 4. Thaw before her marriage and was still pursuing her. Newspaper stories make it appear that W hite was a moral leper of the worst kind. Ile is represented to have ruined scores of young women, but because of hts high position, financially and professionally, he was never brought to aocount. Thaw's immediate fam ily is said to be worth nearly $50, 000,000, and there are evidenoes of their purpose to expose White's past life in all its details. White, thought to have been wealthy, has been liv ing beyond his means, and his estate is not sufficient to wipe out his debts. He leaves a millionaire brother., who will defend bis name. Thaw has plead not guilty to the murder. Mrs. Thaw, it is under stood, will tell all about her past relations with White and give a lot of other information about him.
