NOW FOR GREATER PROGRESS. -1 The municipal election Monday passod off quietly, without inoident and with little interest-lacking in iutorest because there was no opposition either in the race for Mayor or Aldermen. The officers for MM! n? aro practically the same as for tho past two yoars-Mayor, Jas. Thompson; Aldermen, J. W. Hell, W. D. Moss, John F. Craig, W. L. Vernor, C. <y. Jaynes, R. A. MoLoes. This is the old Hoard of Aldormon with two excep tions. J. K. Veal moved from Walhalla ?-and D. II. Rowland failed to register, thus disqualifying himself for re-olectiou. <3, G. Jaynes and R. A. M el.ces wero -elected as now momborH of Council. As tho old officials lay down their municipal authority for the moment, we vish to congratulate thom on tho good record they mado during t hen two years of service. They have accomplished much, they havo iii contemplation mote; they ha.o boon commondod somewhat, and criticised no little Tho local offi cials of incorporated towns aro seldom to bo envied, and desorvo pity moro fre quently than censure. Niuo timos out of 'ten they assume their duties handi capped by insufficient funds to do tho ?tenth part of what is expected of thom, ?and they are oxpoctod to tako tho greater part of then compensation out titi "cussing," with which the people they Hiervo aro beautifully gonorous. As tho now officials assume their au thority, most nf them succeeding them selves, wo congratulate them on going into offico undor, possibly, tho most auspicious circumstances of any sot of olticers we havo had, and wo commend them to tho pooplo thoy aro to Borve as deserving of ovory means of assistance anti help. Certainly thoy do uot occupy enviablo positions, and they aro fre quently and must appropriately re ferred to as "thankless jobB." They deserve tho Support and assistance of every citizen, and tho least any one can do is to refrain from standing in their way and criticising for personal reasons. Their authority should be re spected and thoir hands upheld. Tho towu ha? two vital needs-hotter ?streets and walks, and bettor lights. These have novor hoon what they should hie. Owing to tho unovonuoss of this weet ion tho street question has arisen as A serious problem befnro e;. li succeed ing Council and will continuo to do BO for years to como. During the past two yoars, however, somo pormanout work on tho sidewalks has boen done. Tho laying of hexagon hlooks ou a part of Main stroot has dono away with ex pen sivo "patch work" for that much of tho town for yoars to come. Year by year it is desired to continue this pormanout work as far as possible. In the matter of lights tho new Council will lind another serious problom con fronting thom, and this will novor bo .satisfactorily solved until wo havo a sys tem of electric lights. Until that time, ldowever, wo suggest to tho now City Fathers that thoy tak< up the question of lights and givo it careful and earnest ?consideration. Something ought to ho done, must ho (Inno, to remedy the evil of almost total darkness. If tho system of oil street lamps is to ho continued, then there should ho many now ones. It is hoped and believed, howevor, that tho time is not far distant whoo electric Sights will solve this problom satisfac torily. Wo feel that in tho hands of tho new -Council the affairs of Walhalla will bo looked after well If each official and ?each citizen will du his part to tho host of his ability there will ho a groat move forward in tho noit two yearn, Let us ;.&11 look to tho best interests of our town. HERE, THERE ANO YONOER. Tho decision is fair, inst and equitable. .\ Thors has hoon a wonderful growth of .cotton manufacturing and allied indus* i .-ow in the South during the past year. 'The increase of capital investod during tho past twelve mouths amounted to $0,073,0.r>0. This roproaonts uow cotton mills, oil mills, hoBiory mills, com presses, etc., and additions to estab lished nulls. A Grim Tragedy is daily euaoted in thousands of homes, ss death claims, in each one, another victim of consumption or pneumonia. But when ooughs and oolds are properly treated the tragedy is averted. P. G. Huntley, of Oaklandon, Ind., writes: "My wife had the consumption, and three doctors gave her up.
