Tho Goonoo Teachers' Association was organized in July at Clemson. Think of tho environments surround ing this mooting ! Wo met in tho Columbian hall, on the wall of which was Hampton's and thc Wallace House pictures, Clemson's stately buildings, fine live stock, beautiful flowers and Heide, John C. Calhoun's house, Clemson's pictures. The learned professors and their brilliant wives, thc great summer school and thc State Teachers' Association. If all this cannot inspire one to study, they are as Shakespere said of thc man who has not music in his soul. Prof. Furmnn said, "the most im portant factor in an education is in timate association with trained and cultured minds." This was true at Clemson, for thc best of tho State had gathered there, tho talesman drawing them was, "How to better myself to train the child the parent has trusted to my care." How to train the child is the rub. If we know that Jimmy would bo Presi dent, how we would stuff his mind often to thu neglect of others. If we could see John in the prisoner's box in tho future, how worried we would be. God is wise and keeps all these things from UM. What made Wofford and Thaiian Academy a success? lt was the kind, gentle and educated Dr. Carlisle and Kev. John L. Kennedy. Did there ever live two men more loved by their pupils? The most successful teacher is the one who prepares him self for life's work. Two young ladies went to teaching. They taught in tho same district at different limes. In after years they went back oil a visit. Miss li had spent years preparing herself for her work. Miss G left the old field school and went to teaching. Miss C was made sad when she re turned to her old school, when she benni what the mothers told Miss H. Thus it ran: "You taught my boy to love the birds, trees and animals, to see tho agricultural value of the birds and insects, thc uses of rivers, rocks, etc. Youtnught my girl to love mu sic and flowers." Another mother said : "You was kind to the poor, you let them have your books and papers, and when jon left us it was like the ceasing of exquisite music." While ft pupil nt Agnes Scott In stitute one Afternoon 1 was in the music hall and heard Miss S, a pupil, playing one of Soharneiika's master pieces. The next night we went to Atlanta to hear Scharnetiku. I sat by my music teacher. Miss Melli ide. She wa> BO delighted that she would say " Isn't that grand?" I said, ?'Why that's tho same piece Miss S played al the college." "My dear, yes, it is, but don't you soe tho diff?r ence between a trained player and an untrained ono. Miss s has thc desire to play, but she bas not been trained and sh?' can not bring ont tho power of music like Scharnonkn." Miss McBryde's words have often mie to nie when I soo an uiicdii c I loactior leaching, ere is loo much rush for money. Yon. girls go Otlt to teach without preparation and their oharactora aro not formed and tho results aro fearful. If tho agc of toachors was put to .Jl in piare of 1> we would have fewer teachers and far better ones. I want the ?lay to come when teach ing is not a stepping stone to some thing else and that every rural selim ' will have a teacher, both assistant and principal, who could fill the col lege president's chair. And that the children will not be educated on blood money; while you send your child to school the tuition is paid by a drain of a father whose child is unlearned and poor. This reminds me of a time in Home when Ser nus Tu!) Os was killed by his son-in-law to get the throne. His j body was placed in the driveway and the Kind's daughter came along in her chariot. t4l)o you fear to drive over the dead ?" she said to the cha rioteer. 44 Go on." The man went on, the blood of the murdered father stained the wheels of the chariot and dress of his inhuman daughter. Oconee has made rapid progress in hor schools in the last few years. The teachers are better and the pa rents are realizing that to educate the children is the brat investment. My heart has been made to rejoice at the large number of boys and girls enter ing college this fall, but my friends, for five years I have tried to better the condition of these boys and girls who will never see college, so they must have a school at home. Give thom a good home and teacher. Wo nood a clerk to do tho oflico work of the Superintendent of Edu cation. His whole time should bo taken in visiting the schools, talking to tho trustees and pnrents about modern ideas, forming trustees meet ings, mother clubs for improving the property, teachers' libraries, libraries in the homes and securing teaeheis to go out to rural districts and aid | the people. Give the Superintendent I plenty of stamps so he can reply to teachers wishing to teach here. Every dollar spent on education will bo returned to the State double. We must keep up with tho other counties in educational lines. Wo need a Wade Hampton to lend our schools. Men, think of this when you vote, voto for the best educated man, vote for your child's interest. Now, it is my duty as correspond ing secretary to welcome you to be come a member of Oconee Teachers' Association. We want all friends of education to join us. We meet four times a year. If you are a gentle man, you pay fifty cents ; if a woman, half tb?; amount. These dues will keep up the Association. The Asso ciation is the O. K. S. T. A., reorgan ized. Om Association will beasuo , cess, for the Clemson College men have snid?they will ?dd us, and with our county teachers, club women, trustees and ministers we will pros per ; if WO "seek lirst the Kingdom of God all those things will be added." Now, when Prof. Clinksoalos, the president, calls the meeting let us all join it, and forward march. In sunshine and shade I nm ever ready to lend ft helping hand. Marj e li. Shelor, Cor. Sec. Deafness Cannot he Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of tho ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is tty constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused hy an inflamed con dition of the mucous lining of the eusta chian tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, ami when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can he taken out ?ind this tuite restored to its normal condition, hearing Will he destroyed forever. Nine oases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condi tion of the mucous surfaces. We will give one hundred dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot ho cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free. K. J. ( ll KN KV ?S CO., Proprietors. There is strong confidence among the stockholders of thc two mills that the affairs of the company will be satisfactorily adjusted and that everything will work out to the interest of all parties concerned. As evidence of confidence the operatives of both the mills have expressed themselves as being satisfied to re lyaiu and so taras known none of the operatives have left either of the manufacturing concerns, believing that thc difficulties will be adjusted. The exact condition of the books is not yet known. Expert accountants aro now at work and nothing con cerning the financia) standing will be given out. It is believed it will be far more favorable than was al first thought. OASTORIA. Be?ra th? J*lhe Kind You Hate Always Bought Bryan Writes to Roosevelt. Lincoln, Neb., September 20. William J.
