PRISONER KILLED IN JAIL. ommitted Suicide Alter Holding, the Sheriff .t Hi? Morey. , Ar ierson, May 10.-After Ins fail ure to effect an escape last night, and when he had kept the sherit?*? posses at bay for more than twelve hours, Tillman Wetherall, a desper ate negro prisoner, committed suicido in his oell at noon to-day. By aome means he had Becured a revolver, but when he could not break away last night te became master of the situa tion and the sheriff would not per mit an open battle in the building. All night the negro paued bis cell, with gun in hand, daring prisoners Cifficers to approach him. When riff Green attempted to enter the ,,D he was warned to fall back. Several bullets went whistliug through the jail during tho early hours of the morning. Just before noon, when Wetherall still kept the officers away, he ordered the other ?prisoners to eh ar the hall. They huddled in terror into a small oell, and Wetherall picked up a blanket, walked into a cell on the Eastern side of the oage and lay down on his baok on the cot. In a few moments a pistol shot rang out, and prisoners rushing into the cell found the blood spurting from a wound in bis breast, his Smith <fc Wesson 82 calibre pistol still grasped in his band, which waa lying across his obest. In a few moments Wetherall was 'cad and the floor of the cell was covered with blood. The cell doors were looked and Cornor Pruitt sent %r. Only the coolness and nerve of Deputy Sheriff Scott prevented a wholesale jail delivery about dark Tuesday night. The officer opened the outer ballway door of tho county jail and, and in order to pass into the prisoners a bucket of ice, threw over the lever by which all the oells are locked and unlooked simulta neously. As be did so, Tillman Wetherall and Lonnie Robinson, two notorious prisoners, ran up to the door and Wetherall drew a pistol, ordering the officer to stand out of the way. Instead he olosed the lever with ono band and reached with the other for his pistol. Before he could fire Wetherall and dobinson had dodged into the dark cells. While the officers were trying to locate Wetherall, he fired at a range of about three yards at Marsella Stewart, who was standing at the side of the row of cells with his pis tol in his hand, but oould not well fire at random into the mass of black faces pressed against tho bars. The posse proposed entering the dark cells from tho eleotrio-lightod steel corridor and either shooting the ne gro to pieces or securing the pistol, but the sheriff ordered that the ne gro be left in possession of the gun until daylight. At night he had every obanoo to kill a half dozen men, who could locate him only by the flash of his pistol, and several of the other prisoners, with whom the jaj?fa crowded, would be burt. All the other negro prisoners, who are confined in the same tier of cages, professed to be very much frightened and donied all knowledge of the method by whioh the gun was smuggled into the jail. Tho officers are always careful to watoh olosely the few visitors allowed to talk to prisoners, and usually conversations with negroes are held through a grated window sevoral feet away from the cells. ?etherall was a burly black negro, rently about 30 years of age, low forehead and vicious, sensu ous face. Very little is known among the officers hero about his life, but they say that he has served sevoral terms on county ohaingangs and one term in the penitentiary. He was arrested for housebreaking an d was awaiting trial. RYDALE'S TONIC A New Scientific Discovery for the BLOOD and NERVE?. Editors Courier : I have been no ticing several articles on the dispen sary subject. I abhor liquor or the use of it so muon that I would like to tell the public just what I think of the user. The subject is too large for mo to bandle, but I will throw out a few thoughts anyway, Whiskey is good in its platte, if 1 know whore its placo is. You who use it know its place ; know where it goes and where it stays. You know there is not a pure, oloan Christian on the face of the earth that uses it as a beverage. Ho will go to dives where gentlemen are not found ; therefore I say no gentleman will drink it as a beverage. Probably the husband is a mem ber of the church ; tries to stand up in sooiety, or he may be a Sunday school teacher or superintendent, or a Iradi v of the choir or he may be a deacon. What does the Bible say about what a deacon should do, or t.tther should not do ? He will come home from town with his breath so strong of whiskey that his wife can not get a good breath without that awful scent of whiskey, although he has tried to take a little of every thing he oould think of to kill the scent. I think the best thing to do would be to put him out-doors and let him cool off. Has any one ever been along this line ? Probably you have family prayer. What doeB the wife think whee he mixes things up so badly ? He prob ably thinks the wife never suspi cions anything wrong, but, neverthe less, the wife knows more and dis covers trouble quicker than any one else. She has a right ; she under stands her husband better than any body else. Tho husband may hold different offices or positions, or, perhaps, he may be a school teacher. Then I wonder why the trustees do not em ploy him? They have a good rea son for not employing him. They do not want a whiskey-drinker to teach the children. I think church members and school teachers should be strict prohibitionists. But there is no need to worry about this 'evil because the people will have the dispensary if there is no determination to stop it. Some counties have VOted out the dispen sary. Why couldn't Oconee? The whiskey traffic is bad enough at its best, but I believe it would be far bettor for the country people to abolish the dispensary. Its sale, under police regulations, ia better for the town people than dispensing it through blind tigers. The blind tigers would be easily suppressed by tho vigilance of the polioe; there fore you would have very little trou ble and it would be far better for the country people. If you abolish the dispensary you should see that it is not transferred to the hands of the low, drnnken class of people. Speaking of the allotment of the dispensary Behool fonds : The money ls divided among the counties of the State according to enrollment after the deficiency money is distributed. Is it not a shame and sin to eduoate our ohildren on the money these poor drunken people have spent for liquor ? oalling every one a drunkard who takes a dram or two, but he is just that muoh drunk. I see the Stnto Board has fixed the price at which bottles will be bought by the wholesale dispensary. I sup pose those that drink will try to sell bottles in order to get back some of their money. I will drop this sub ject, as the public probably knows more about tho dispensary law and affairs than I do ; so 1 will pass on to what I want to bring to everybody's mind-the fate of the drunkard and his family. Just think of a father trying to raise and educate II?B children-raise them so they will stand highest in aooioty-creeping in home drunk or has been [drinking. You know that tollu just what a man thinks of him self and family, if he has one, and tells where he goes and what com pany ho kccps.ltIf a man will get drunk he will do anything else. A member of the ohuroh who would get down so low aa to drink ont of a drunkard's bottle, and then go home|to his ohildren, pretending to bo training up his ohildren in the way they should go, is not fit to train a shepherd dog. The Swedish Luthurau and Metho dist churches and tho opera hout-e block were wrecked and dozens of residences razed to thc grouud. Tic tonado struck the Southern end of thc. town and cut a clean swath one hundred yards in width through its entire length. Coming as it did ot midnight, the people were caught without a moment's warning. A heavy rainstorm had preceded the wind and after the tornado passed a 8ceneof complete desolation followed. The tornado broke upon the town with great force, wrought its havoc within a few minutes time and con tinuing into the rich farming country north of Marquette, caused further damage. In Marquette many resi dences were completely demolished, the wreckage being oarried away en entirely, while others were picked up bodily, moved a short distance away and dropped to earth. Many of the victim H were killed as they lay asleep ; others, maimed and bleeding, awoke to find them selves buried in the wreckage of their farmer homes. Following the storm was a lull. Soon the cries of iujured and fright ened people could be heard on every hand. As quickly as possible the work of rescue was begun. When the missing in Marquette had been pretty well accounted for, the searchers directed their attention to the surrounding country. Soon half a dozen wagon loads of dead and injured had been brought to town from the district adjoining it on the the South. THREE PAPERS A WEEK FOR $1.50. The "Mary who had a little lamb" was a Massachusetts little girl. The lamb was thrust out of the pen by its unnatural mother. Mary took caro of it, and it became a great pot, says th? St. Louis Globe-Demoorat. One day when the lamb was to be taken to the pasture no lamb was to be found. Hearing Mary singing on her way to school, hor pet had quietly trotted after. On reaching the door Mary carried it in and hid it in her desk. There it lay perfeotly quiet, covered with Mark's shawl, until Mary was sent to her spelling class. The lamb trotted after her and as obildren then were very much like children now, of course they laughed. The teacher reproved Mary, until she explained the situation, when she allowed her to take her pet home. It happened that on that morning a young man named Rawlston, who was preparing tor Harvard, was at Behool. A few days later he pro duced three verses of the poem. How they came to be published is not known. The young man died soon after, not knowing of the im mortality of his verses. One of the best com mercial argumonts in favor of educa tion that we have seen is given in the following terse paragraph from an exchange : "The average eduoated man gets a salary of $1,000 a year. Ile works forty years, making a total of $40, 000 in a lifetime. The average day laborer gets $1.50 a day SOO days in a year, or $460 a year. In forty years he earns $18,000. The difference, or $22,000, equals the value of an edu cation. To acquire this earning ca pacity requires twelve years at HC.IIOOI of 180 day a eaoh, or 2,160 days. Divido $22,000 by 2,160, and it is found that each day at school is worth a little more than $10 to tho pupil." ?.rn An Aged Couple Murdered. With their heads battered almost beyond recognition, F.
