Tho chief detective of a groat Southern railway system had ad journed to tin? smoking compartment of the Pullman for a final cigar be fore he climbed into his upper berth. Ile had just finished a job of clover sleuthing and was in a talkative mood, which quickly brought tho ?ialf-do/.un other smokers to atten tion. "I suppose in the beginning I was supplied with as much confidence in human nature as tho average man," he bonan, as lu; settled back into thc .cushions and put his feot on a chair, "but after spending twenty years in finding out just how much the truth is stretched every time somebody sues tho company for damages for personal injuries there isn't much left of it. "I hadn't been wearing railroad gumshoes very long before I was turned loose on a case where a six teen-year-old boy wanted $100,000 damages because ho was deaf and dumb as the result of a railroad wreck, "I worked on tho case for two years, during which time the suit was postponed from ono term of court lo another, until finally it had to be tried. Tho sum total of all my knowledge was that thc boy hadn't spoken nor apparently heard a word for two years. "On the morning of the trial I ad vised the company's lawyers to settle for *'J5,000, which they offered to -do. Tho plaintiff's counsel refused tho offer, so the case was called. ? nc OWoeUOO nu e.uiuj?ieiA-iy one-sided that, tho case would cer tainly >.avo been finished and gone to the jury before night, but at noon I had an idea. 1 thought that if we bad one more day something might turn up to us. I conferred with the company's lawyer, and at about the hour when the case was ready for tho jury our leading attorney was taken suddenly ill. The Judge had no al ternative but to adjourn court until the next day. "That night I went to the pl an ti lt's counsel and explained that we were ready to settle, but wanted to make a physical examination o' the boy iirst. Ho had no objections, so we rented a room in the local hospital ?nd look the boy lhere. "We put him upon an operating table, around which were gathered tour white coated, white-whiskered men, alleged to be eminent surgeons, bul iii reality the company's lawyers ' Alter baring the youth's bosom Dver the heart, the chief surgeon grabbed an ugly looking knife, and joleranly said : "'Urethren, there is about ons . .hailee in a hundred that the patient will survive thia operation. Aro you \ illili!"; to take the chance ?' " 'Wo are,' answered the others. "The words were hardly spoken bi ?ort' the1 Loy lot out a yell, and cried, 'For God's sake, don't kill roe.' "Then ho snapped his jaws to gether and became dumb again, but ihe few words he had said were mighty cosily for hun, tor his law yers immediately tin ow up tho Sponge and asked for the dismissal of the the case the next rooming." Then the detective felightod Ins .. ii^ar, and remarked that he always iliad more trouble getting the truth out of a woman than a man. "A few years ago a Buffalo' woman, \vho was known to us as a member of a fake injury syndicate, put in a otarra for $60,000 against us for al? leged paralysis of all her limbs," con tinued the detective. "She pretend ?ed that her spine had been jerked ont of kilter in a little one-horse wreck down in Tennessee. "I was positive that the woman was as sound aa a dollar, but I couldn't prove it.-' 80 I had to move to 1 ?nflalo and camp on hor trail. Finally I managed to strike up an acquaint ance w?th another woman who was on very intimate terms with the supposed paralyzed one. "1 professed to be a member of a hand of personal injury grafters out in Chicago, of whom ?he know some thing, and I showed HUOII an exten sive knowledge of th? gaiuj that she believed me. Of course, ?ho wanted me to meet hor frioud, the paralytic, the ti rat thing, and I was for it strong. "She gave me a very effusive letter of introduction, and 1 started out on the warpath. When I found the woman I wanted, sho Was propped up in bed and was certainly doing tho helpless aot to perfection. When I sprung the letter she warmod up, and we wore soon merrily discussing our experiences in taking various kinds of falls out of railroad treas uries. "When I arose to go I suggested that her friends in Chicago might like to read a little note from her, which I would bo pleased to deliver withiu a couple of days. Xever sus pecting for a moment, she hopped jauntily out of bod and dashed off a few lines in no time. "Then I sprung my detective's badge on her and she suddenly be came the most activo woman I ever saw. She made a break for a gun, but I pulled first, and had her in a cell in less than an hour. "She was arrested not long ago in Chicago for trying to Hi tn diam another railroad."-New York Sun. In the Merry Srpinglime.
