Last Tuesday, in .Saluda county, about 1*2 (?'clock, while on his way to the polls, doe 1). Willis, a young white man, aged 2?? years, son of Kx Attditor Willis, was shot and in stantly killed near Berry's cross roads by .lohn I-Jerry, also white. Ile was shot twice with a breech-loading shotgun, one load taking effect in the breast, and the other tearing off thc batik part of hi? head. Til ore were eye-witnesses lo the terrible tragedy. Last Tuesday, near Donald's, Neal Robinson, a most repulsive looking and desperate negro, insulted a young lady, the daughter of 10. M. Richey, a respectable farmer. Tho lady got a shotgun and the negro left. She went to a neighbor's hoilSt) anti gave thc alarm. A posse of citizens took thc negro's trail and soon captured him. They carried him to Richey's honst; and a jury td' the older mon present decided thal as Robinson failed in his purpose that fifty lashes on thc bare back with a trace would be light punishment. This was dono and thc negro released with a promise to leave tho Slate for good. Tho teacher who docs not obuorvo Arbor Day, violates tho law of the State,} and if a child is taught to broak a j law, what Cati you expect of him I when a man? A great military leader of Germany was n?k?d from whence came his army's strength. His reply was, "From that little school hons*', for there the children are taught lo love (tod and the fatherland." The teacher is more than a queen, and isn't it our duty lo have only the best in our rural schools? "Not that I love Caesar less, but Home more"-not that I love the teachers less, hut I love tho future destiny of our country more, and this prompts inc to speak ont for better teachers. I know what I am going to say will bo hurtful to tho feelings of some teachers, but I am pledged to try to upbuild dur rural schools, and "ho who hangs on prince's favors" is very weak minded. So I will try to do my duty. There is a tendency to teach with out going to high schools or colleges, and by very young hoys and girls. Can wc ox peet to rise ? The husiness man wants a trained book keeper, the housewife a trained cook, hut they* will send their chil dren to a poor teacher. O, may thu day ctnne wh?n tho rural teachers will be educated--heart, head and hand. The school ollioial who lets a poor teacher teach is putting a premium on ignorance, Stop and think ! Some of our rural teachers aro paid $75 a mouth ; thc poorest are paid $'25. A pupil of the seventh grade in one of our graded schools is now teaching and drawing a salary as large as her teacher in tho graded school, who has spent years and money on her education. At Rook Hill, at the conference, several col lege graduates said they wanted to leach here, hut they would not teach where a poor teacher received as much pay as a good one. Do these "girl" or "hoy" teachers ever ask God to give them wisdom to make the children noble men and women? As a school visitor I have observed that thc best improved schools in ! thc two counties I visited are taught by better educated men and women, and the pupils are bright and in love with their work, I ask the mothers to form a Mothers' Club for school improve ment. 1 want ( Iconee to be the loading county in the State, ami ? ?judging from the rapid improvement in tho past, if we get the mothers Consolidated and to work with thc' i Superintendent and school visitors, it can he done. Thc mothers can stay at homo and belong to this elah, except on Arbor Day, (the .'aird friday in November,) when we vvaht then to meet at tho school house and form a club and send mo their names. Kaoh mother is asked to read the bulletin of Dr. Metcalf, of Clemson, "Sanitary Conditions of tho Home ami Karin." When you become a mom bor of this club you pledge yourself to sacrifice for your child. Start him to school tho first day and keep him in school ; see that his hair, teeth and nails aro brushed ; provide him with hand kerchief ; keep his clothes clean; don't mind the patches; leitch him to he honest, to love and obey his teacher, to love animals and birds, and not to make fun of a poor child. Ask him of his school, bul don't let him gossip; take an interest in his gaines, give him dowers for his teacher, teach him to love agricul ture; take nice papers for him to road ; buy him hooks; give him a musical instrument; spend a day with him at the school liO'ce, sit on the hard seats, come home and think ol' how idee (?) they were; invite your trustees to your home and talk over your school improvement ; ask them to organize a county trustees' meeting, and tell them Of the large number of children out of school ; got them to hunt and "honey" them up and fill the school house ; tell them of a new hook for tho library some noble hook that wi.'l lill thu child's mind with good ideas. (Jet the trustees interested in fl library at the. oilier of ihr Superintendent of kdilOAlion for teachers' use. Hon. O. I?, Martin said he would gladly aid Iii this movement. I can get help, but 1 have mentioned this to several teachers, bul could not got their co-operation. Now, lot us all-young ladies, mon, womit) and children-hand togcthor ami try to diminish tho largo nulli numnor ot people who cannot road. Think of thc poor cripple and weak minded child who omi not outer our schools. There is no place for them in thc State. Thcro aro hundreds of poor children on tho farm bogging for even nu old paper to road. Don't forget to observo ?rbol' Day and devise plans to od neate nil thc white children of our county and wo will have fewer crinios. 1 want lo live a life so that when I die sonic ono who was onco a poor child can say, "she gave me sutishino and started mo upward."
