?> Th? Hell Bound Train. A DKKAM. Tom Gray lay down on the bar-room floor, Having drunk so m ach he oould drink no more, 80 he fell asleep with a troubled brain To dream that he rode on a hell-bound train. The engine with blood was red and damp And brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp, An imp for fuel was shoveling bones, While the furnace rang with a thousand groans ; The boiler was Ulled with lager beer And the devil himself was the engineer. The passengers made such a motley orow, Church member, atheist, Gentile and Jew, Rioh men in broadcloth and beggars in rags, Handsome young ladies and withered old hags, Yellow and black men, red, brown and white, All ohained together, ("what a horrible Hight!") While the train dashed on at an awful pace, And hot winds scorched their hands and ftfoe. Wilder and wilder the country grew, And faster and faster the engine flew, Louder and louder the thunder orashed, And brighter and brighter the lightning flashed ; Hotter and hotter the air beoame, Till the olothes were burned from each ? quivering frame; And in the distance there roBe such a yell, "Ha! bal" croaked the devil, "we're nearing hell." Then, oh, how the passengers shrieked with pain, And begged the devil to stop the train. But he capered about and sang with glee And laughed and joked at their agony. "My faithful friends, you have done my work, And the devil can ne'er a pay day shirk; You have bullied the weak and robbed the poor, And the starving brother turned from your door; You have laid up gold where the oanker rusts, And given free vent to your fleshly lusts; You have juBtioe scorned and oorruption sown, And trampled the laws of nature down. You have drank and rioted and murdered and lied, And mocked at God in your hell-born pride; You have paid full fare, so I'll oarry you through, For it is only right that you should get your due; Why, the laborer always ezpoots his hire, So I'll land you safe in the lake of Are, Where your flesh shall roast in the flames that roar, And my imps torment 70U more and more." Then Tom awoke with an agonized cry, His olothes soaked with sweat and his hair standing high; Then he prayed as he had never prayed before, To be saved from drink and the devil's power; And his vows and his prayers were not in vain, For he never more rode on the hell-bound train. Tragedy on Train. Valdosta, Ga., September 13.-One of the coaches of the Georgia South era and Florida passenger train, coming from Jacksonville to this oily, was the scene of one of the bloodiest obapters that has been writ ten in the history of the Okefinokee regions. In a general melee a white man named Jaokson Duncan was stabbed to death, two negroes wore killed and Marshal Duncan was stabbed in several plaoes and either thrown from the train running or fell off. The men who did the kill ing, recording to the report, are Charles and Hillary Altman, who re side near Baxter, Fla. The killing was the result of a row, precoded by a long period of bad feeling between the Dunoans, who are prominent naval store men, and tho Altmans and other oitizens of that plaoe, who appear to have been resentful of the development whioh the still and the mill had brought to that seotion of the coun try. The Dunoans have stated here a number of times that they were always having trouble with their neighbors, who persisted in trespass ing upon their lands. The tragedy oaused great excitement in that s<* < tion of the ?Hate. ? ?' ??.*? Cured Hemorrhages of the Lungs. "Several years sinoe my lungs were so badly affected that I had many hemor rhages," writes A. M. Ake, of Wood, Ind. "I took treatment with several physi cians without any benefit. I then started to take Foley's Honey and Tar and my lungs are ss sound as a bullst. I recom mend it in advanced stages of lung trou ble." Sold by J. W. Bell, Walhalla; W. J. Lunney, Seneca. Immigrants und Mora of Then. Commissioner Wataon, of the Depart ment of Immigration, continue? to find people of all nationalities who are ready and willing to catt in their 'lot with us. Every few days, almost evory day, iu fact, the aunouuoement is made that im migrants from Scotland, England, Couti nental Europe and even the uttermost parts of the earth come to him with a request to be allowed to avail themselves of tho exceptional advautages which South Carolina offers to every one. During the recent primary eleotion the people of the State took very effective means of proving ? hat. they wore beart and soul in fa vor of tbe movement now on foot to bring S'jutb Carolina as many reputable white citizens as we can possibly gee to come here from other parts of the world. It will be doubtless a difficult matter in the future to induce any man running for publio office to como out in opposition to the immigration movement, and Mr. Watson can go ahead with his admirable work in the utmost confidence that be has the sympathy, and will reoeive the support, of at least 09 per oent of the white people of tho State. If he oan make it so in tho near future that he oan bring us a thousand immigrants, where he is now bringing us one or two, no complaint will be raised by very nearly one hundred per cent of his follow-citi zens.-Nows and Courier, Septomber ll. mom A New Jersey Editor's Testimonial. M. T. Lynch, Editor of the Philips burg, N. J. Daily Post, writes: "I have used many kinds of medicines for coughs and roMs in my family, but never any thing so good as Foley's Honey and Tar. I cannot say too muoh in praise of it." Sold by J. W. Bell, Walhalla; W. J. Lun ney, Seneca. .?.tm Good for South Carolina. South Carolina is to be congratulated upon the possession of a practical and successful worker for immigration to the State. About four months ago E. J. Watson entered upon his duties as Com missioner of Commerce and Immigra tion. One of the first acts was to make a trip to New Tork, where he gave South Carolina wide advertisement. One re sult is the sale of two great tracta of land in Lexington and Aiken counties upon whiob about 7C0 families of Scandi navians from the Northwest are to be settled, the whole transaction involving Ultimately occupation of 35,000 acres of land and representing an investment of more than $320,000 in purcase alone. That is a magnificent showing for four months' work. It is no wonder that South Carolina rebuked last week petty manifestations of a spirit of antagonism to the immigration bureau. Facts ac complished aud others bound to follow should enoourage the next Legislature of the State to strengthen the banda of Commissioner Watson and his force. Manufacturers' Record, September 9. W. Creighton preached a very strong and earnest ser mon on temperan no In the Methodist church on Sunday morning, taking for his text Proverbs 20th chapter, 1st verse: "Wine is a mooker, strong drink is rag ing." In the course of his sermon he took occasion to say that he was most strenuously opposed to the Brioe bill. He said it was a blow, devised by politi cians, at the dispensary law, and while he was a prohibitionist from tho prac tice and principio, the dispensary was far preferable to the open barroom. And if the people had tried as hard to en foroe the law as they had to break it up we would have had prohibition. We thresh over this race problem time and time again, and say hard things about ourselves and about the negroes, but this faot stands out unmistakably.' The negro who goes along and attends to his own business and behaves himself is doing well and has no complaint to make. It is the negro who is of no servico to himself or to the white people or to his own race who is always getting into trouble.-Anderson Mail. T.W.Wood? Chefoo, September 0.-A Japanese column, numberiug approximately 700 men, while marohing alone: at night on a road in the valley between Long Hill and Division Hill, met a frightful disaster through the explosion of an eleotrio land mine, on Septembor 1. The mine was oarefully laid by tho Russians three weeks ago. It oovered nearly a milo of available marching spaoe. The explo sive was placed next, and on top of those clay was packed so carefully that the ground gave the impression of not hav ing been disturbed. The indications of Japanese aotivity in this violnity put the Russians on guard. Near midnight the .outposts rushed in and reported that the Japanese were approaching. Tho Rus sians withhold their fire for some time. Suddenly they threw a searchlight up the valley. The Japaneso oponed with a rifle Are. Tho Russians waited until ap parently the wholo Japanese column was in the danger zone. Then the mine ex ploded. The force of the explosion ! knooked a uutnber of Russians down, and the Bight of Japanese rifles, water bottles, legs and arms hurling through the lighted spaoe made by the search light was an awful spectacle. Some rooks landed inside the Russian lines. There waa one appalling moment, during wbioh the garrison itself was stunned, then a death like silence. The search light ooldly lighted up the road and hill sides strewn with dead. The following day the Russians buried the dead, but owing to their dismembered and mu tilated condition, the Russians were un able to accurately estimate the number of killed.
