Wo aro glad indeed to note tho fact that tho town of Walhalla has taken a decided stop forward in tho mattor of municipal improvomout, and wo tako thia carly opportunity to commend tho Hpirit that bas prompted our Mayor and City Council, our business mon and C. II. Mayhew in working to got improved si reefs: and sidewalks. Tho proposed work is to bo of substantial and perma nent form, and its cost will not bo moro than 10 por cont of its worth to tho town and tho property owners who have en tered tho agroomout to boar oqually the oxpeubo of improvomont. Kvory outlay of money in such maunor represents a paying investment, and wo would Uko to eoe oach year sections of pormanont pav ing put down. To bo suro it comos high at first, but it is tho cheapest in tue end. Enough money has boon spont on our strcots for "patch work" during the past twenty years to havo put thom in o\.-ellen! and substantial shape, so that now tho cost of keeping thom ?ti repair would have booti a mero nothing. We ato glad to seo this boginning at porma nont work. It is tho boginning of tho USO of true economy in municipal affairs. Wo think it would bo -v wiso plan for tho present municipal authorities and thoir successors to put in a sectio.. ot porma nont work each year on tho streets and do as little repairing as possible consistent with good streets of tho old typo. Wal halla is growing and it is but simple i'e.i iee that slio should bo given such municipal improvomont as will koop her woll up in the lead with tho host towns of tho State. Thorn is also a need of individual offort for public enterprises. Wo havo made a fair beginning in securing tho establish ment of the knitting mill with local capi tal, and there should bo other enterprises started. Eaoh adds to tho business of tho town, and oach increases tho popula tion of thc place or gives employment to thoso who would otherwise bo idle. Every ono helps tho town. There is no question as to Walhalla's greatest need just at present and that is a now hotel building, equipped with modorn conveniences, built on a twen tieth century plan and calculated to draw patronage. Walhalla is naturally a good hotel point, summer and winter, and with the proper kind of a building tho le. el business could easily bo doubled in a vory short while (Jet your heads and your purses together, business mon, and look into the matter of securing a good, ? nodero hotel build i tig for Wal halla. You .will find it. will pay both directly and in directly. THK Wogglo Hug is not oonneoted by blood or marriage to the devil, Tom Wat son or the boll weovil. Two Anderson Mon Fi ?M. [Anderson Mail, September 18 ] James Martin and John Robbins, two well-known young men, had an alterca tion on the court house square yesterday afternoon, winding np in a fight with knife and pistol. Robbins was ont on tho arm, the back of the head, the shoulder and the face, and Martin was shot once, the ball entering the top of the shoulder and ranging downward sud to the right. JI is body is.paralyzed from tho waist downward, and it is thought the ball is lodged iu the spinal oolumn. The result of this wound cannot be fore told for several days. It is thought, however, that ho will recover. Those who saw the difficulty say that after a few sharp words Martin began slashing at Robbins with his knife, nnd Robbins backed off, apparently trying to get away. Finally Robbins, who is guard on the county ohaiugang, reached for his pistol, but before he could uso it a violent slash in tho arm sent it dying. Robbins circled around until ho caine in reach of his rovolver again and picking it up, shot three times at Martin, back ing away as he fired. Although tho first Bhot took offeot in Martin's shoulder, ho emit inned to advnncc upon Hobbins until ho foll. Robbins stood still with his pis tol in bis hand for a few minutes, thon walked over to tho Orr-Gray Drug Com pany and had his wounds dressed by Dr. J. L. Gray. They are painful, but not serious. Martin was carried to Dr. W. H. Nar din's office in the People's Rank building. The probo failed to locato the ball, but it is thought that it either struck tho spinal oolumn or is embedded iu it, thus pro ducing paralysis of the lowor limbs. Tho rolativos of both mon promptly furnished cash bonds for each in the sum of j? 100. Martin and Robbins worked together last yoar as county convict guards, and Martin's sister is the wife of Michaol Hobbins, brother of the man who did the shooting. Mr. Robbins is a son of Jesso Robins, a well-to-do farmer, of Rroadaway township. Sour Stomach. When the quautity of food taken is too largo or tho quality too rich, sour stom ach is likely to follow, and especially so if the digestion has boeu weakened by constipation. Eat slowly and not too frooly of easily digested food. Masticate tho food thoroughly. Let five hours elapse between meals, and when you feel a fullness and weight in tho region of the st omach after eating, take Chamberlain's Slorr.auu and Liver Tablets and the sour stomach may bo avoided. Clemson College, Septembor 15.-The session of 1004-6 oponed yesterday with over six hundred in attendance. Some 080 have boon accepted anti all of that number h ave reported except a dozon or so, who for valid excuses wore granted permission to enter a few days later. Tho campus, tho barracks, tho president's and tho treasurer's offices, tho examination rooms, etc., have boon tho scone of busy excitement for several days previous to tho regular opening yesterday morning when the first chapel assembly was hold. Tho exorcises woro conducted by tho Rev. K. G. Finlay, and af tor a few appro priate remarks from Dr. Mell and an nouncements tho classes began reporting for duty. Thia is thc largest regular attendance in tho history of Clemson College, and, oven after a twenty-ono room increase in tho dormitory capacity, a hundrod or two applications had to bo turned down. Not only tho dormitory capacity, ht t tho class room, laboratory and teaching ca pacity of tho college will be taxed to handle so largo a crowd of aspiring youth. Tho immense mess hall, where every cadet in school eats at once, presents a crowded and inspiring scene at meals. At chapel oxercises this morning tho same crowded condition was evident, a numborof students hoing unable to got seats without much crowding. Major R. K. A representative of tho uniform manu facturers is hore taking measures for uni forms, and in a few weeks the corps will of course bo much moro presentable as a military body. Prof. Leo is an oxporioncod and effi cient military man, and will manage tho work ably and woll until a United States officer can bo secured to succeed Col. Sirmyor. It is still boped that Col. K. B. Fuller can bo secured, though nothing definite has yet boon heard from him. Emorgency Medicines. lt is a groat convonionco to have at hand reliable remedie-, for lise in cases of accident und for slight injuries and ailments. A good liniment and ono that is fast hoooining a favorito, if not. a household necessity, is Chamberlain's Pain Balm. By applying it promptly to a cut, bruise or burn it allays tho pain and c mses tho injury to beal in about one thud the time usually required, and as it is an antiseptic, it provonts any dangor of blood poisoning. Whon Pain Balm is kept at hand a sprain may be treated boforo in I lamination sots in, which insures a quick rocovory. For salo by J. W. Bell, Walhalla; Seneca Pharmacy and W. J. Lunney, Sonoca. Convicted of Murder. 8partanburg, September 17.-'After arguments were finished to-day in the Dean case the jury retired to their room .nd in forty minutos reported a verdiot of guilty of murder, with a recommenda tion to the meroy of the Court. Judge Qary Immediately seutenoed him to lifo imprisonment in the penitentiary. The killing of McKinney occurred nearly two years ago, on the roadside, near Duncan's. Ho was accosted by Harry Dean and shortly afterwards the shooting took place. Deau olaimod that ho shot in solf-dofenoe. Attornoys for the defence gave notice of an appeal, which will suspond tho exe cution of tho sentence until tho Supreme Court decides tho caso.
