These young ladies have made many friends and acquaintances during their visit to our mountain town. -Miss Antoinette Hammond, of Ab beville, who is pleasantly remembered here, was the guest of Miss Annie Rose last week. She loft Monday morning for Rome, Ga., where she goes to resume her studies. She expects to gradu ate at the close of the next session of the college she is attending. -Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Jaynes, of Wash ington, D. C., arrived in Walhalla last Saturday and remained until Tuesday afternoon, visiting relatives and friends. On their return they stopped at Spartan burg, S. C., to spend a day with the family of Hon. J. T. Johnson, Congress man from the Fourth District. Their friends were delighted to meet them again and to see them looking so well. - Evangelist, Rev. S. J. Cowan, of At lanta, Ga., by invitation, began a tent meeting in WoBt Union on last Thursday night. The meeting is still in progress, day and night, and will continue through the week, including next Sunday. The attendance is largo from the surrounding community. Mr. Cowan is well known to many of our people, he having about eight years ago held a series of meetings in Walhalla under his tent. Atlnnta, September 8.-J. N. Porter, a woll-known planter of Dougherty county, died hore at the Baptist Tabernacle In firmary of blood poisoning, which is said to have been oaused by the bite of a negro. Several weeks ago, in a light with a negro farm hand, Mr. Porter was bitten on the thumb, the negro's teeth sinking almost to the bone. No atten tion was paid to tue wound at the time, but soon after Mr. Porter began to suffer from the swelling of his thumb. He went to Albany for treatment and then came here. Recently his arm, which was severely swollen, was amputated in an effort to save his life, but the poison had gotten into his system and he died, after long and severe suffering. Smith, about 50 years old, who lived at the Spartan Mill, oommitted suicide to day by shooting himself through the hoart with a parlor rifle. He was alone in one room of the house, the other mem bers of the family being in an adjoining room. He was born near Glenn Springs. It Is a sad affair. Ill health and despond I enoy oaussd the deed.
