SENECA'S BUILDING BOOM. Stn??? People ar? Awake te the Bett Inter ests ?f Their Tewn-Th? Nsw Bank. Seneca, August BO.-Seneca con tinues to lead in the county and proves to be one of the. moat pro gressive towns in upper South Caro lina. At present there is under con struction a new hotel, being built' by R. M. Richardson, and a large barn and stables are now going up on T. M. Lowery's lot. These are being built for the storage of wagons, bug gies, harness, farming implements, stook, etc, for.the large trade he has t built up in the past few years. At t^Rjtsent he has one of the largest ?^Ruldings in the oounty and more floor spaoe than in any one building in the oounty. This building is full and he has, been forced to build an other warehouse for the storage of his mammoth stook of goods. Dr. W. R. Doyle has uuder con struction, on the lot at the rear end of Hunter, Dendy & Co.'s store^a large warehouse, 100 by 80 feet, for one of our leading merchants. The bank, reoently organized, capi talized at $50,000, is an assured fact, something over $45,000 having been already subscribed. B. L. Lowery is president. The bauk will be in new quarters, when opened for business, which will be early in the fall. It will be on the corner lot of what is known as the Bacon corner. The two brick storerooms now there will be torn down and a handsome build ing will be put up on the corner, 30 by 90, two stories high, for the bank, wbioh will be equipped with the latest fixtures and furnishings for banks. On this lot will also be a number of storerooms. Messrs. Lowery and Hamilton propose to build up the re maining portion of thia block, which will afford ample room for at least 6 or 8 storeroom*. The buildings will all be two stories high, 25 and 30 feet wide, and 90 feet loug. It is to be hoped that above .these stores a hall or opera house will be fitted up for some attraction? to be given dur ing tho fall and winter months. It is believed that a hall of this kind would prove profitable to the land lord and appreciated by the public. Let us have a hall of some kind for the coming season by all means. Dr. W. B. Doyle is now making preparations to build a storeroom adjoining J. D. Morgan ?fc Co. Briok and sand are now being hauled for this purpose. John Harper is now having placed on his lot, where Kell &. Co. wore located, which was burned down a few weeks ago, sand and brick to re build. R. M. Wright's dwelling, now un der construction, is nearing comple tion and will be a very attractive cot tage when finished. What we need is more dwelling houses to rent. Only a few days ago a man from an adjoining town was in Seneca hunting a residence to rent. Ho stated that he wauted to move his family to Seneca so that he could take advantage of the school facilities afforded hore. Aftor look ing over the town for a house he re turned hom?, we are very sorry to state, unable to find a house ; there fore he will not be registered as one of our citizens. This is not the only instance. Every few weeks there is somebody looking around for a resi dence or business house. At present there is not a vacant residence, cot tage or business house in Seneca for fljk ?\: Three store rooms wore rented JlkWtO merchants of this town something over a year ago, and still they are not finished. Only a few weeks ago a man was herc looking out for a loca tion for a business and stated that he was very much impressed with the town and that ho would have been a citizen of Seneca had he succeeded , in securing a residence and business house. Unable to secure either, he returned home. We must have moro dwellings for rent. We must have more business houses to attract the outside people to our town. It is only a question of a short while un til Seneca will be lighted by elec tricity and have a system of water works and other improvements that will liven things up. More business houses have been built in Seneca in the last year than in ten years pre vious. It has been a record-breaker, and it is believed before another year rolls around Sencoa will have brokon another ^record. Let all give one hard, continuous pull and all pull to gether for the upbuilding of Seneca, and then it will be only a question of time when we can afford room to attraot the outside people to become citizons of our town. h. it. o. Mystery Cleared by Meeting ot Two Brothers Grand Kapids, Mich., August 27. Two brothers, one of whom had been tried for his life on tho charge of murdering the other, met unex pectedly at a hotel in this city the other day. They are Edward S Van Liou, of this city, and Corneliui S. Van Lieu, of Pasadena, Cal. Tin meeting cleared up a mystery of long standing and relieved one of tin brothers of a shadow whioh has rest?e upon him for years. Twenty years ago the brothers hac quarreled in a tavern in Oneidf county, New York. After the quar rel Edward returned to his home ai Vernon Center resolved never t< recognize his brother again. Corne Hus made a like resolution anc having no family, determined to gc west and forget. He left withou seeing any member of his family 01 his friends and without giving |then any idea of his plans. The next day after the departure of Cornelius a search began. Tin search was in vain and it was ru mored that Cornelius had beer struck by his brother and carried away. Edward was arrested, trice in the courts of Oneida county anc set up a claim of self-defense anc tho jury disagreed. A second tria followed and he was discharged. Five years ago Edward came west and located at Grand Kapids. To clay he went to a local hotel to mee a friend on business. While there 1 stranger accosted him with the ques tion ; "ls this Eddie Van Liou?" "lt is," was tho reply. Inside of live minutos a dispatel was sent to tho aged mother ii Oneida county, New York,| and an other to tho Oneida county authori ties informing them of a happy re union. The brothers have d?cid?e to return to their old homo at onci to prove conclusively that Come Hus still lives. [New York Evening Post] If the Evening Post is sometimes overtaken in a fault, it is glad to be overtaken in one *hat leaps so strongly to virtue's side as ovorreadi nesss to praise those that under great difficulty strive to uphold the or derly administration of the law. The tragic holocaust at Stateaborot Ga.t in which the miscreant participants lowered themselves to the moral level of their victims, proved us in error when we spoke yesterday of the military precautions against mob violence as being "prompt and effect ive." As a matter of fact they were disgracefully feeble and inadequate. We do not find, however, that we have a word to retract in our state ment that "Too great credit and honor oannot be given to all the people of Statesboro, Ga., concerned with conducting the trial . of the negroes charged with the murder of the Hodges family." The elimina tion of mob violence will not be the work of a day or a year, but leaders of the better class of citizens, such as Judge Daly and Kev. Mr. Hodges are worthy of all tho greater credit for their willingness to engage in an uphill tight under particularly trying circumstances. The fact that Judge and jury did their duty at Statesboro only makes it all the more important that the prosecuting authorities and the Governor of tho State should now give their attention to the mob. There never was less excuse for a lynching, for the Court had done its work promptly and the death pen alty stared the murderers in the face. Morely to have tho satisfaction of burning the negroes, the lynchers swept aside the soldiers, defied the authorities, and turned a deaf ear to the pleadings of the Judge. We have not lost faith over-night that the better element of the South is strongly opposed to such outrages. But the "best citizens" are on trial now. If they do not come forward and insist upon the punishment of the white lynchers in the name of humanity and civilization, if they remain silent in the face of such, an attack upon a swift-handed justice, then they must be considered as either craven or oriminal. Gov. Terrell, absent from his post, should return without a moment's delay to set the example by insisting upon the enforcement of the law and the punishment of the offending militia officers. B. Ben nett, who killed his wife by accident at Brunson's, in Hampton county, will be brought back to the Peniten tiary here to serve out a life sentence because he violated the conditions of his pardon and came back into the State. Tho peculiar part about it is that even had he killed his wife in tentionally ho could not be tried for it now, because he has a life seutence over him. As soon as the Governor heard of the Brunson incident he sent the following telegram to Sheriff Lightsoy : "Arrest Bennett, convicted of mur der and sentenced to life imprison ment ; pardoned January 1(5, 1908, by Governor McSweeney, conditions having been broken, to await peni tentiary authorities. Advise me of arrest. Foley's Kidney Cure is a medicine free from poisons and will euro any case of kidney disease that is not beyond the reaoh of medioine. Sold by J. W. Boll, Walhalla; W. J. Burton at Monetta, Saluda county, in April, was vtried at Saluda this week and the jury re turned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to morey. The evi dence showed that Thrailkill, assisted by his son, was the aggressor. Thrailkill, however, had all kinds of evidence to show that he did the shooting in defense of his life. It was pretty clear to tho jury that the defense had been made necessary by his own action. The younger Thrail kill was not indicted. Quick Relief for Asthma Sufferers. The strike sp:rit has reached Spartan burg. The Baptists had bargained for a carpet for their new ohurch. It was brought in Atlanta, and Mrs. Brooks, an expert in putting down carpets, was sent by the house to seo if it was made and put down right. Negro help was fur nished, whioh she did not like. She plainly told the church people that she would not do the work with them. All yesterday morning there was parleying and attempts at a settlement of tho diffi culty. The finishers working on tho in terior of the building struck, through sympathy with Mrs.- Brooks. The wo men of the.church came to tho relief and they formed a big Dorcas Society and be gan to sew up the carpet, which they are going to have put down with local holp.
