Tho mob followed and a proposition to storm the stairway was mot with a threat of instant doath to tho tlrst man who made a move. Meanwhilo tho negro was hur ried down a back stairway and taken in a buggy to Newton jail. State Sunday School Convention. The twenty-seventh annual Stato Sun day School Convention will bo hold in Washington Strcot Methodist Church, Columbia, May 2-4, (Monday to Wednes day, inclusive). The Sunday School Convention is in terdenominational; its object is to build up the Sunday School cause in South Carolina, Ita present aim is to organizo every county in South Carolina. Every wide-awake and progressive Sunday School in South Carolina may send dele gates. Paatora, superintendents, teachers and workers are all oligiblo. It would bo woll for the schools of Walhalla to bo represented at tho con vention. Tho gathering of workers in this cause, and tho interchange of mc i h ods of work, will prove a great stimulus to teachers and superintendents, and will i .uh in infusing new lifo into tho work in all sections. Rut the cbiof inter est centered in a proposition from Chi cora College for Women at Greenville, to convoy that nourishing institution, upon certain specified conditions, to the joint ownership and control of Enoree and Bothel Pi eshyt eries. The ?chemo was approved and Rev. Robt. Adams was ap pointed to represent the matter before the South Carolina Presbytery and Rev. G. G. Mayes before Bethel Presbytery. Rev. G. G. Mayes, E. E. It is announced that tho sum of $230, ?J28.72 has boon received by tho Southern Presbyterian church for foroign missions for' tiie ecclesiastical year just closod. He taught the sum ner school last summer ano the sohool tgain this winter and during that time bo won the love of all his pupils, as he teemed to take all interest in helping thom in w hat over thoy called on him for. ?Ve feel safe in assuring Prof. Mathis that he and his wife will nave a hearty welcome at any time, if they should be to kind as to condescend to conic back to Oakway.
