Has Stocking Room. A "stocking room" has boon built and furnished in tho National Bank of Commerce of this oity. It is called tho "stocking room" because it is a plaee where a woman may g; to bo alone and out of sight while she takes from its scouro hiding placo tho money sho wishes to de posit. Tho room is beautifully furnished. It has an inlaid floor of different colored woods, wainscoting of ma hogany, tho walls set with mirrors and a chiffonier in one corner with combs, brushes, rouges and other toilet articles ; but the most inter esting things in tho room are three mahogany stools, about twelve inches high, with a leather cushion at tho top of each. These stools aro not intended to be sat upon. There are chairs for that purpose. The stools are for women to put their feet upon while they aro taking out their money. Next door to tho stocking room is tlie woman's main room, witli desks and cliairs, and beyond that is a waiting room finished in mahogany. William II. Winants, vice-presi dent of the bank, took tho World correspondent into the "stocking room" to-day and showed him its beauties and mysteries. "Not many men will ever see the inside of this room," said Nr. Win ants. "It is sacred to the use of our women clients. A colored maid will al ways be in attendance in this suit of rooms, and no man may enter its portals during banking hours. I have seen tho necessity of it ever since I have been in the banking business. It is a fact that half tho women who come to til is bank to deposit money carry it either in their stockings or on the bosoms of their dress. I have often had women come to my desk and blushingly inform me that they wished to deposit some money, but would have to go into retirement in order to produce it. "Why I have seen women many times go into one of these corners and turn her back and peep all aroud, then stoop down and gently bring forth a roll of bills. We de cided if women would carry their money in such places we would make it easy for thom to abstract this or re place it, so we originated tin stocking room. I predict that it will soon be a feature of all banks that have private rooms for women clients."-Kansas ('itv Dispatch. An Austrian gunboat has foundered Off the oqast of Spain. This portrayal of the experiences of the patient women of the olden times, when women not only bore many children, but were over burdened with the toil and oare necessary to bring them np, ?B graphic in its correctness. The pioture is so true that I kneoly appreciated it, being myself the eldest of thirteen. In the retrospective it seems lo me incredible that any woman could have had tho endurance and have accomplished what our mother did for her largo family in a country primitivo in every sense of the word in those days. Yet she performed her duties so faithfully and with such marked ability that tho remembrance of her achievements has been a robuko to mo all the long yours since hor un timely doath. She filled hor mission with such exalted ambition for all of hor chil dren that it still seems to mo that her like is not to bo seen in those latter days. That tho women of hor day were suporior in tho qualities that go to make up blessed womanhood and motherhood seems indisputable. In tho first place thoy wero wholly uu scliish and solf-sacrifioinp; for their families. I do not claim that there aro no women of tho present day who would not do ns they did, but I do claim that their prototypes aro not numerous. Wo have only to contrast tho con ditions of to-day with thoso of a quarter of a century ago to realizo tlie difference in the facilities for accomplishing anything in those days and the prosont era. Electricity and tho ingenuity of men have lifted many of the burdens of domestic lifo from tho shoulders of women. . Imagine tho contrast of tho White House with it? up-to-date improve ments and tho modern methods of conducting it as tho homo of tho President's family and its condition when Abigail Adams had to have the family washing dried in tho East room and wrote such gloomy letters about her domestic trials while sho was its mistress. All along the lino from thc first home iii the land to tho humble cot tage in tlie far West, domestic work has been made easy ; to say nothing of the chango from hand-earding, spinning, weaving hand-mndo mate rial and band-made blankets, table and bed linen and the clothes for these large families. The cheese, butter and sweetmeats that these women made every year, not only for tho use of their large families, but the hosts of gu? sts they entertained, for hospitality was un? limited in "ye olden times." To which add the prodigious labor they performed in raising poultry and supervising, if not actually work ing, the kitchen and flower gardens. Other fields occupied their time also. The work of their churches-they took an active part in every move ment for the advancement of religion and thc building of churches. They bad to take turns in board ing tho ministers and school teachers, and aid in keeping Up the six months' schools-all they had each year. Mrs. John A. Logan in St. Louis Re public. Kelburg, which U situated in Po? land, not far from Cracow, is one of the mokt extraordinary cities In the world, for not only ls it entirely subterranean, but the mate, rial used in ito construction .is not stone or bi ?ck, but salt, says Pearsons' Weekly, London. NH Three thousand people are resident in its 700 houses, and they nre all workers in the great salt mines. The street and squares are pavel with rook salt slabs of purest white, and are kept exquisitely neat and clean by a corps of volunteer scavengers. The pride of the city, however, is ito Cathedral, curved in suit and lighted with eleotrioity. It is gorogously decorated and on the high altar blazes the magnificent cross whioh was presented by the late Czar of Russia, when he descended from the upper air in order to worship there for a brief space eleven years aj;o. Disease of an infectious or conta gious nature is quite unknown io Kelburg ; in fact, the majority of the inhabitant? die of old age. A non fatal ailment of a scorbutic type is, however, occasionally prevalent, aud a mild form of ophthalmia, said to be due to tho continual and all-pervad ing whiteness is more or less com mon. Regsrded as aoity of salt, pure and simple, Keblurg ie of course, unique. But there aro several examples of cities situated boneatb the surface ol the earth. In the Pcruviau province of Cuzoo, for instance, is an abandoned quicksilver mine, 170 fathoms in circumference and about 100 in depth. And within this profound abyss are streets, squares and a chapel, where daily religious worship is carried on. Among the inhabitants are many old men and women who have never oared to visit tho earth above them sinoe they left it as little toddling ohildren in the early years of the last coutury. In Japan, again, thirty miles or so from Kumanolu, somo 20,000 men, women and children are permanently resident in tho orator of an extinct volcano. In this pit-like city, surrounded by a vertical wall more than 800 feet high, the entire community lives, moves and h&i its being. Rarely, indeed, does one of its members make a journey into the outer world ; and they are not often intruded upon, for they are of a ohurlish, not to say revengeful, disposition. The Etahvans, or "Arctic High landers," of Ross, live in the ioe oaves within tho vast glacier oap which covers all Northern Green land. Theirs is, perhaps, the most wretched and isolated existence it is possible to conceive. Their "dwellings" are always wet, owing to tho molting of the ice walls and floor. For full six months of the year the darkness of the erotic night envelops them. The ice is around them, beneath them, abovo them In nine oases out of ten, if they ven turc abroad, they breathe the frozen particles and tho sensation is akin to that whioh comes from inhaling thc blast of a furnace. Nevertheless they refuse to move further south with the approach of winter, as do all the other Eskimo tribes. They take a sort of perverted pride in their loneliness as in their misery. "What matter," they say, "if we are cold and hungry ? We are tho last of all peoples. We dwell liter ally at the end of the world. To the north of UB there is snow, there ico ; but there is no land, aud there is nothing that lives, breathes or has independent movement." In 1898 a wild tribo of natives was discoverd in the Wentworth district of Now South Wales, whose dwellings and mode of living approximated al most exactly to those of our troglo dyte ancestors. The tribe had its origin in a runaway black fellow hid ing in some little known country thirty years with a few gins. During that period the horde had increased to above thirty persons mon, women and ohildren. They herded together in two low caves which they hail dug for themselves increasing thoir length as fresh arrivals in the shape of babies neces sitated more room. Thoir only food consisted of kangaroo, with oat and ant eggs. Their sole weapons wore spears and they were merely stems of malice wood, pointed and barbed. They produced fire by rubbing two sticks together and their water was contained in bags made from the skins of kangaroo legs. It was noted as a ourious faot that whon discovered the station blaoks had the greatest difficulty in making tho wild tribesmen understand them although thirty years previously they must have all spokon tho samo lan guage. _?_ CASTOR IA For Infants and Children.
