Anecdotes of proaobors being on tap, Hon, John Dougherty of Mis souri contributed tho following : In one of the counties composing the Third Congressional district oj Missouri there lives a good Christian lady, a devout and consistent mem ber of the Methodist Episcopal O hmo h, South. Some days before the dato of a quarterly conference held there some years ago our good lady friend received word that thc presiding elder would be her guest for a few days during tho meeting In order to oonvinco tho elder thai she had boon and was doing bei Christian duty in the matter of train ing her only ohild, a boy about foul years old, to walk in "the straight and narrow path" she thought it nol amiss to give him some spcoial in structions before the minister arrived So taking the little fellow upon hei lap one day she. told him that thc presiding elder, a big and a greal man, would visit them soon and thal he would "be vory sure to ask Borne questions about your Sunday school how you like your teaohort etc Bul probably the first questions he ask? will be: What is your name? How old aro you ? Do you know when had boys go when they dio ? Now when ho asks your name, tell hin Johnnie Jouoo. When ho asks how old you arc, toll him four years old and whon ho asks if you know where had boys go when they die, toll him using tho Scriptural word, that bad boys, whon they die, go to hell.' John was drilled on these question* daily until. tho minister came. Ir the meantime ho know by rote thal his name was Johnnie Jones, that ht was four years old and that whor bad boys die they go to hell. Tho minister was a portly gentle man of friendly manner and ploasanl countenance. After receiving a cor dial Welcome ho was scated in tin: sitting room, and tho proud parent excused herself and sought Johnnie the pride and expectancy of her lifo to introduce him to tho minister After John's faco was washed, hit hair combed and ho was otherwise made pro8entable his motlier led him in to meet tho preacher. As thc urchiu entered the sitting room ht observed through tho open door f neighbor playmate Bitting on thc fence whistling for him and calling him to como out quick. Johnnie at once grow impatient to go out anti wished tho ceremony of meeting tht preacher and answering his questionf to bo dono with as quickly ns possi ble. The doting mother introduced him as the youngest and her onlv child, tho baby of tho family. Thc good minister called tho boy to him and taking his little chubby hand ir his own remarked : "What a verv handsome lad ! How Uko his mother 1' His next question was oxaotly at had been anticipated. "Well, my little man, what is your name?" Thc boy glanced first up to tho minister, then at his waiting playmate and, intending to expedite matters m much as possible by answering thc three expected questions at once, re plied, "Johnnie Jones, four years old, go to hell," and in tho confusion that followed skipped to meot hit friend..-Champ Clark. Tho various things I thought wore good things bogan quarreling among themselves and trying to agree upon a fusion ticket that would win out. Four years ago I was in a foreign land whoro.there were no drug stores, so I had to resort to the Swedish cure, which does not allow one to take medicine. Therefore, I used carbonate of sodaovery night. When tho heartburn came on I took a hand ful of it. One night when I had no soda I said to myself : Vi would rather stand tho pain." Purely by accident I stretched myself on ray left side, and, curiously enough tho pain passed away. I made the same experiment several times with tho same result. "When I went to London I spoke to my friend, who is tho seoretary of tho Royal Medical Sooioty, and asked him why the heartburn passed away when I lay on my left side. Ho said ho didn't know. Well that was in a place whoro doctors were passing through each day by tho hundred, and I asked him to see if any of them could toll me. Nono of them could. One doctor, a very famous one, no less than Sir William Thompson, said he remembered hearing of it fifty years ago when his own heart burn was cured that way by an old man in Germany, but he had never thought of it since.
