Ono of tho most interesting stories that I findjn tho old war scrap book ?8 that about tho capturo of John Morgan by tho homo guard in Kahlin county, Georga. It was published in Tho Athens Watchman in 1864. Tho story ns givon in tho paper is as follows : "An incident conncoted with the rctnarkablo escapo of Morgan from his Northern imprisonment carno to our knowlodgo tho other day, which will boar repeating. Having made application to two respectable citi zens of Kahun county for a night's lodging and been refused because thoy thought ho was an impostor, a third, who had seen him before and recognized him, invited him to his house, whore ho spout tho night. In the meantime it had been currently reported in tho village and vicinity that an impostor, pretending to bo John Morgan, waB at tho house of Mr. "Next morning about twenty of the '?Homo Guards' assembled, and under tho direction of their efficient captain, arrested him. Ho quietly submitted and assured them that if he failed to prove his identity he would accom pany them to Atlanta. About this timo one or two gentlemen who had seen him recognized him, satisfied the Home Guards that they had cap tured the veritable John H. Morgan ! Ol 00111*80 he was at once released, liefere leaving ho addressed thc crowd briefly, commending in tho highest terms the vigilance they had displayed, advising them to arrest all persons who could not give a satisfeatory account of themselves, and closed with the piny fill remark that twenty men had accomplished in Kuluin what it required forty thousands in Ohio to do. The crown gave nine cheers for Morgan, and he proceeded on his way to Walhalla." On that date whilo in latitude 53.22 south, and longitude 73.22 east, he saw to tho southwest an expanse of sea that had a bright red appoaranoo. Tho phonomona interested him and ho direotod his vessol toward it and as he oamo near ho noticed that it appeared to bo dotted with black specks. When ho roaohod it ho saw tho strangest sight that had greotod his eyes in a sea faring lifo of forty-throo years. Ab far as tho oyo could soo in ovory direction tho soa-wns blood red and filled with millons of wrig gling snakes. Thoso roptiles had blaok backs, and about two inches from tho tail began a whito linc that was about throe inches broad. Somo of tho snakes woro doad and tho upturned bellies of these woro whito. Tho roptiles squirmed, but mado no progress in tho moss and many of them wore out to pieces by the prow of tho ship and tho sorow. They appeared to m ak o no effort to escape. Their average B?ZO was three feot, but somo of them woro six foot and moro long. Tho vessol wont through tho entire extent of tho moss, con suming in tho passage nearly two hours, it being fourteen miles long by four miles wide Tho black par ticles which tho captain had noticed woro seeds somewhat resembling those ot tho watermelon, but larger. On his left sat a young man who had contracted tho habit of profanity, and the habit was so strong that it had got beyond his control. The young man had a particular weakness for the expression : "Oh, tho devil I" Ho used it thoughtlessly and without] intention to give offense, but itseemed to serve as a sort of punctuation for every sentence he uttered. Initially a friend of thc young man thought it necessary to give bim a hint and said to him : "You'd better be a little careful of your expressions. You are sitting next to the Kev. Dr. Leighton Parks.*' "The devil !" said the young man in surprise. And then, recovering his presence of mind, he turned to tho clergyman and made a very polite apology. Westminster Times, October 24 : "Tim Voyles is suffering from a wound in his left hand made by a bullet of a 38-calibre revolver. Ho was handling tho weapon and in some way it was diseharged, tho ball entering his left hand and lodging near the wrist joint, whero it remains. He is suffering great pain, but is slowly improving. Litorally, Stokes is dying of ag \ for in his lifo thoro has been crowded so much of sorrow and tragedy and strife that tho yours ho has lived do not begin to measure his oxporionco. Tlio faco of "Jim" Fisk has always beon before him. Since his release from prison in 1877 ho has novor slept in a dark room nor has ho over bcon alono at night. Stokes' lifo was as uneventful ns the oxistonce of any ordinary wealthy young man until, at tho age of 'iii, ho met Eisk. This meeting led to ono of the most famous tragedies in this city. Eisk, with Jay Gould, controlled the Erio Railroad. Ile found it desirable in 1864 to cultivate Stokes, as a combi nation with Ins oil business would bo of great advantage to the railroad. Eitdx was in tho full Hush of glory when he took up young Stokes, who was already getting to be a well known figure in tho city. Ho put him into the way of making money remarkably fast, and for almost six years the two were fast friends. Then Fisk began to suspect his friend of playing too frequent visits to the bouse of Miss Josie Mansfield. Eisk hired a deteetive and had his suspicions confirmed. Ile was quick to act. Ile attacked Stokes through tho courts, in which bo bad influence. In January, 1871, Stokes waa arrested at the Hoffman House for embezzle ment. Stokes was nt dinner with Miss Mansfield when news of Fisk's movo was brought to him. I Io started out to hunt for Fisk, and an hour later be shot and mortally wounded tho latter in tho Grand Central Hotel. Stokes was twice declared guilty of murder in the first degree. On the third trial tho veY diel was manslaughter, and bo was sentenced to four years' imprison ment. Ile was released tn 1879, and came out with hair as while as snow. The life lhat is slipping away from Stokes is a burden that he will pro bably be glad to lay down. Some where in Europe the woman who made him a murderer is living in con tentment and comfort.
