A little incident which somebody about tlie White IIouso witnessed tbo other day is significant both as an illustration of certain traits in thc character of President Roose velt and ns an example for Iiis ad mirers. There has been an impres sion among certain of his critics that I he believed "tho strenuous lifo" to consist chiHly in hunting and kill ing animals ; but though a mighty hunter, bois not merely a Nimrod, as tho following occurrence shows: It was a rainy, dreary day, soon after Mr. Roosevelt's return .to Washington, and after a busy morn ing the President and his secretary started out for a walk, .lust outside the door ley a homeless, friendless dog, i's close to tho wall as ho could get, his body curled up into tho smallest possible bunch to avoid the rain and possible observation. As the two men emerged from the door he looked up apprehensively to seo if a kick or a stern "lie off with you, now !" would compel him to beat a rapid retreat. Hut nothing of tho sort occurred. Mr. Roosevelt's ex pressive face took on a pitying and kindly look, and bending down, h?i stroked the animal's head and pulled him gently by the ears. "Poor doggie, haven't you any master ?" he inquired. Then he went batik into the house, and the dog, with instinctive understanding ot the situation, trotted close at his heels. The President ordered that the waif should be taken to the kitchen and given a good meal ; and it is said that dog will bc thc dog of the White House during this admin istration. Mr. Roosevelt is not one of those sportsmen who are satisfied with pop ping away at tame pigeons. When J he goes hunting he wants thc excite ment of killing a dangerous wild boast. It will be a good thing for his boy admirers to remember that thc man who led the charge at San .Tuan Hill was quite as ready to bc friend a homeless cur as to hunt cough ors or grizzlies.-Spnrtanburg Journal. $100 KEW A RT) $100.
