What tho Moulders of Public Opinion Say and Think About the Mailor. That is a queer movomont on tho part of Stato Chairman Jones. Finding that his hrr^o business in terests do not pormit him to mako tho race for tho Seuato, ho withdraws and urgeStho others candidates to do tho samo, so that O on. Wade Hampton may recoivo tho unanimous vote for tho United States Senate. The movomont is quoor becauso : 1. Mr. Jonas did not seo tho pro priety of tho suggestion until ho found it was not convenient for him to run. 2. Tim suggestion presupposes that the half dozen men who havo dc dared themselves candidates havo a right to select a Senator of thc United States from South Carolina. 8. It would permit Mr. Jones, and tho other candidates, to say not only the kind of man, but tho kind of Democracy, South Carolina wants and that ia the real point at issue in tho State. The Observer has always believed that thc method of Gen. Hampton's dismissal from tho public service was littlo short of an outrage, and if the general should bo a candidato for re election wo might champion his cause-wc certainly would if his opinions on public questions should commend themselves to our judg ment, and if in addition it should appear to us that he is physically vigorous enough to discharge the duties of Senator. It must he re membered that Gen. Hampton is an old man. His torin of oflice would not begin boforo 1008, and at that time he would be, if wo mistake not, 85 years of age, and before thc term oxpires, 91. There is a very commendable sen timent involved in thc plan proposed, but this is tho day of practical poli tics, and common sense should pre vail. Tho attempt is making in certain quarters to commend the candidates who adopt Mr. Jones's idea and to condemn any who may not. There is no sense in that. Suppose all shall adopt it-then a handful of men would .say wdio is to bo tho Senator from this Slate, and the pooplo would have no voice in the matter. It must be left to them to say. If they shall say Hampton is tho man they want, then the wrong of 1890 will be wiped out-not otherwise.-New berry Observer. An Absurd Proposition. The proposition of Col. Jones for all tho candidates for thc Senate to withdraw in favor of Gen. Hampton strikes us as absurd and one that is purely sentimental and without a single element of practicability about it. It is not practical politics, and its only use will be to let Col. Jonos out of the race gracefully. ICvery hody knows Gen. Hampton and he holds a placo in the hearts of tho people that but few of her sons has ever held or ever will hold. But the old general is now a feeble old man, past the four score mark and thc infirmities of age aro pressing heavily upon him and he could not possibly fill a seat in the Senate and it would mean that the State would practi cally be without ono Senator in Washington during the term, if he should be elected. But could he bc elected ? Wc have some doubts. And we do not think ho could be elected without Opposition. This is tho day of young men, and oven if all tho candidatos who have declared themselves should withdraw that does not keep out other aspiring and ambitious young men who want to enjoy political honors and emolu ments, That Gen. Hampton is thc great est living Carolinian goes without saying, but a man who has passed the lour score mark is beyond tho ngo of public usefulness. Ho has been unable for some time to appear in public and has excused himself from attendance upon the reunions of his old comrades because of the Infirmities of old age, and it is almost a orttelty IO attempt to drag him now from tho retirement of his old agc, and we have no idea that he will sanction such a thing. Ho would break down before tho campaign was half over and if he did not and was elected ho could not endure tho la bors and fatigues of a session of the Senate. We think it is a groat faux pas that Col. Jones lia* stumbled upon and it is a great pity it has been done. Hut we have this to say that if by any possiblely all the prosont candidates should get out of tho way, of which wo do not think there is the least probability, and Gen. Hampton should stand for eloction, which is extremely improba ble, WO shall ho for him first, last and all tho time.-Anderson Daily Mail. . W. T. Among tho speakers at Tirzah, on August 3, 1900, was Mr. A. C. Lati mor. Tho Enquirer bad no personal representativo at that meeting, but | got its information of what occurred from different pooplo who wore pro sont. Among otlior things Mr. Lati mor was reported to havo claimed much credit for his offorts in behalf of rural freo dclivory and many of his hoarors understood theso claims to infringe achievements that they know belonged to Dr. J. William Stokes. This writer was, at the time, serving temporarily as the Yorkvillo correspondent of tho Charleston News and Courier, and told of tho circumstances rolatod in that paper. A fow days afterward there carno a lettor from Dr. J. Wm. Your hit on tlie picture on?vdng business was a centre hit. Several others equally appropriate-organizing free junkets among members, placing bis kinfolk in tho government service, and having his farm set in grass at tlie government expense and under a government expert when the State farm at Clemson is but a few miles distant. All this is of a piece with tho penitentiary book case scandal. .X # ? With kind regards, Faithfully, J. Wm. Stokes All this was so interesting that thc writer was constrained to ask Dr Stokes for more substantial details, at the same timo giving assurance that nothing thc doctor would write would afterward be used to his em barrassmont as a publie man. In reply Dr. Stokes said that all the matters inquired about wore of com mon knowledge in Washington, and some of them are of public record. Tlie lettor covers four pages, but for thc present one or two short extracts introduced here as "Exhibit Ii" will HU flice : Orangeburg, S. C., August 21, 1900 Mr. W. D. Crist, Yorkvillo, S. C. : * * * The party in question organized a junket to Cuba, and also one to Due West from Washington a couple of years ago, and many smaller trips to New York and Niagara for family and friends. On many, or most of these, I was per sistently urged to go. It was urged that it would cost nothing-untiKI plainly told the party that was my chief objection to going. Ho also had sent nie an annual pass over one of the great trunk lines, which I re turned. I have heard of others whoso scruples of this sort wero over come by him. * * * If any con trove. \y should ariso and I am called upon to testify, I will not flinch ; but I don't caro to appear in thc role of informant, even though it lie fts to matters of public record. Faithfully, J. Wm. Stokes. After these letters had been rend more than a year ago, they wero carelessly thrown aside ; but when Mr. Latimor made his vicious attack Ml tlie The Enquirer ?it Tirzah soino weeks back, they became of renewed importance, and it luis required a tedious soarol) to bring them to light igain. They contain Homo additional facts that are quite interesting, but which, for the prosont, will keep ns well as tho others would have kept liad Mr. Latimor conducted himself with becoming circumHpection at Tirzah.
