Make Addresses-Mrs. Lodboltor, Now tko Mother of the Regiment, Present. [Published by KccpioBt.J Pendleton, August 14.-Tho nine toon th annual reunion of the survi vors of Orr's Killen was hold to-day at Sandy Springs, four miles from boro, on tho Blue Ridge railroad, whioh was tho old camp of instruc tion where tho regiment spout some two months iu tho summer of 1861 proparing for tho serious business of war. The purpose was for the veterans to moot and tent on tho old camp grouud last uight, but it rained a groat deal, so that not moro than twenty of tho survivors, including Gen. Ilemphill, the president of thc association, spent tho night there But nearly all of tho old tents havo rotted down, and thc few remaining leak so badly that thc veterans wore in danger of having a revival of war time oxporienco but for tho authori ties of Sandy Springs church kindly nsking them in out of the wet and permitting thom to roost through tho night on tho church pews. This morning the clouds hung low, and showers fell throughout tho day, and tho relatively small attendance, both of old soldiers and the public generally, is due to this cause and not to any decline of interest in these annual reunions. Gen. R. R. Ilemphill was re-elected president of the association and J W. Thompson was continued as secretary. Comrades ll. Y. II. Low ery, W. T. McGill and A. M. Guy ton wcro mado vice presidents. A committee, consisting of W. T. Ric Gill, W. T. Ellis, W. A. Barron, R. Y. II. Lowery and J. R. Burns, was charged with tho duty of selecting tho next place of meeting, which is a fixturo for Tuesday after the second Sunday in August. Col. Orr and Hon. Hobt. Aldrich, of the gentlemen invited to address tho association, were present and effective, but Col. J. N. Brown sent a letter of regret, which was read. Col. Orr made one of his charac teristic, off-hand speeches, in whioh, after speaking of tho old regiment as ono of the finest bodies of men in tho armies of tho Confederacy, he pleaded for a correct history of the war to bo taught in the schools of tho South and for a modest, but comfortable home, with land at tached, in every county, where the needy of tho old soldiers may round out their days secure from privation, and assured that their countrymen aro proud of them and their deeds. Ho closed with an account of the great progress the South is making along all lines of industrial endeavor just now, and predicted a marvelous showing for tho future. Col. Aldrich's address on "The Confederate Soldier" was a master piece, being, among other things, a complete refutation of the aspersions cast upon tho Southern soldiery by Northern critics. That address, completely exhaustive of thc subject and clothed in the purest diction, should bo given a placo in til archives of tho association. Gen. Ilemphill also made a brief address, the leading features of which were a running account of his service with tho regiment from thc 20 th of June, 1802, to the dropping of the curtain at Appomattox, and an nt tack upon the inequalities in the operation ol tiie iStato pension law. Since the death of Mrs. Orr the mantle of the mother of the regi ment is being worn by Mrs. E. E, Ledbotter, widow of Lieutenant Co lonel Ledb?ttor, killed on tho glori ous field of Second MatlSsSas, and this good Indy was present to-day, receiving the respectful salutations of her husband's old comrades in arms. The oldest survivor present to-day was IL VV. Haddon, of Company (!, who ?H 81; but tho oldest living survivor of the regiment is VV. C. Dickson, of Company I), who is living at White Mound, Grayson county, Texas. Mr. Dickson is 88 and is totally blind. W.T. Ellis, of Due \\* st, was the only survivor of tlx regimental band present ; in fact, ibero is but ono other survivor ot the musical corps-John J, Ansel, of Walhalla. Mr. Kllis exhibited the watch, a double COHO time piece, which has boon running all these years, ho wore / at Sandy Springs forty yoars ago, aud whiob ho carried through tho war. Tho band wa? componed of the following tuen : W. M. Tribblo, Johu Cruise, August Brenneeke, John J. Ansel, S. W. Clinksoales, Harrison Vandivor, John T. Kay, Franois Cleveland, W. T. Ellis, P. C. Kant and P. W. Pieper,! Companies D, K and L were re cruited in Anderson county ; A, C, IC and F in Piokons, whioh is now PiokonB and Ooonoo ; li and G in Abboville, and II in Marion. These latter aro remembered ns small mon, but in battlo bigness of stature is of no prestigo, and tho little follows from Marion made as good soldiers ns any. The companies woro quar tered around tho squaro of wooden tents, enciroliug tho big ekolcton arbor, in tho following ordor : On tho West, A, C and F ; on tho North, I) and L ; on. tho East, li and G ; on tho South, E, II and K. This arrangement throw companies from the samo couuty near to oaoh other. The regimental headquarters wero in tho old church which stood at tho cornor near tho springs. Company drill was hold within tho enclosure, con taining perhaps two and a half acroB ; but battalion drill and dress parado woro hold in a corn hold from which the growing crop had boon cut, and tho ground rando smooth and firm with a heavy roller. Groat crowds fathers, mothers, wives and sweet hearts, proud of tho martial tread of sons, of husbands, of lovers, but sadly conscious of tho bereavements, that must follow tho coming battles iioclccd thoro daily to see tho soldiers drill, and dress parade was tho ovont of the day. A thousand woll drilled, stalwart men, with Hashing oyo and olastio stop, tho pick of tho Piodmon tese, in their uniforms of Confederate gray and stripes of greon, and all impatient "to git n-holt of thom Yankees," must have been a magnifi cent sight, and tho pity of it is that we Bhall never moro witness it. Tho mon rende/.vonsod there July 19,1861, and named the place Camp PiOkens, in honor of tho Governor. Karly in Soptember they wero moved to Summerville, (Camp Orr,) where or at Sullivan's Island tho first deaths in the regiment occurred-three men in Company F, John liradborry, John Kallengcr and John Lyles, all corpu lent men. Tho original captains were : Liv ingston, Co. A ; Perrin, Co. Ii ; J. J. Norton, Co. C ; Harrison, Co. D; M. M. Norton, Co. E ; Hawthorne, Co. F ; Miller, Co. G ; Fairly, Co. I ; Cox, Co. K, and Moore, Co. L. Fivo of these, namely : Livingston, Perrin, J.J. Norton, Harrison and Millor, the latter being in command at tho last and captured with a portion of tho regiment at Sutherland Station on tho south side of the railroad near Petersburg April 2, 18G5, became colonels of the regiment by gradation. While tho regiment was at Sandy Springs Jamos L. Orr was colonel ; J. F. Marshall, lieutenant-colonel ; I). A. Ledbetter, major; Benjamin Sloan, adjutant; T. li. Lee, sergeant major; li. F. Crayton, quartermas ter; II. It. Vandivor, commissary; T. A. Evins, M. I)., surgeon, and Kev. Mr. Sloan, chaplain. Those were tho old soldiers pres ent to-day: lt. lt. Homphill, Co. G ; J. W. You aro forbiddon by law to allow any toaobor to bo paid who usos tho old books instead of tho now. In addition to taking up tho old books and soiling tho now through tho de positories, County Superintendents aro hastening tho exchange by scouring tho co operation of tho merchants in difier en t country neighborhoods. They have recommended to the publishers reputable mon to handle tho adoptod books on con signment, and tho publishers have con sented to ship supplies to nil suoh per sons-tho books to bo sold at tho wholo salo contract price, tho merchants hand ling thom to bo allowed 5 per cont of tho proceeds in compensation. Although this is small compensation, it satisllos tho country merchant who realizes tho value of tho advertisement in handling tho school books of tho neighborhood. Tho publisher thus re?oives less for his books in this state than any where else in tho world, and school chil dren buy books at tho prico wholosalo doalors havo to pay outside of South Carolina.
