The orange went in thc animal's mouth and far into his throat. For a moment he gasped and gave a violent twitch, but the fruit stuck. In thc meantime tho boy made his escapo. In tho Southwest, especially in Kansas, tho loss will bo severe, hut in Iowa and other States raising as much or moro than Kansas in a normal season tho outlook is by no moans hopeless; o von if rain duos not fall for two wooks there will bo a chanco of a fair yiold. Harvesting and threshing of winter wheat progresses satisfactorily, and tho outlook in spring wheat States is such as to practically assuro tho largest total yiold ou record. Oats hnvo boon damaged to snob an ox tout that there is no prospect of oven au avorago yiold. Hay has boon injured by drouth in tho Southwest, but outside that region tho crop is fully up to expectations, and high prices will make this a vory valuablo yiold. Rain has greatly improved the cotton outlook, though much moro is needed to 8ocuro host results. lt is noteworthy that whilo agricultural products hnvo suffered from boat and d "outh, there is much less loss from in socts than usual. C., July 21.-Tho South Carolina railroad commission has noti fied Trafile Managor Culp, of tho South ern Railway, that tho roquost of tho railroad companies to havo tho rato on cotton seod in carload lobs increased has boon refused. During thc past two yoars tho cotton seed industry has boon a big factor for tho farmers and has cro atcd a groat trafile. Tho old rates worn reasonably low and tho railroads clainiod that it was just to have them increased. Tho contention is mndo by tho commis sion that tho rates in offect at tho present timo havo boon responsible for tho build ing of many cotton seed oil mills, and that this manufacturing industry would bo crippled by any incroaso or chango. Making changes, tho commission adds, would bo practically tho adoption of legislation to tho advantage of ono inter est and to tho detriment of another. Heartburn. A spoolal dispatch to tho News and Courier from Audorsou, prlntod yester day, told of tho of?orts wbloh woro being made In that ol ty. to have the Southern Railway operate through trains from Charleston and Columbia to Walhalla, instead of to Greenville, as 1B being done, at tho present time. The Anderson business men think this arrangement would be best for the railroad, and they are oertain that it would be host for their town. While no answer has hoon re ceived from the company, it is not likely that any change will be made for some little timo. Tho Bluo Ridge Railroad, over whloh tho now schedule to Walhalla would havo to bo oporatod, was only sold a fow days ago and tho Southorn doos uot claim to havo boon tho pur ohasor. It is woll undorstood, hoWovor, thnt tho lino was acquired hy the South orn, and tho chances aro that tho Wal halla destination will bo adoptod for through trains at no distant day. With this ohango Greenville would ho nt tho ond of tho branch lino, running from Holton, nt which latter point connection would bo mado with trains botwoon Charleston and Wai halla. Tho Ander son pooplo havo mado tho point that it is moro important to havo through trains connecting at Seuooa with tho main lino of tho Southorn from Washington to Atlanta. Seneca is only thirteen miles from Contrat, which is equi-distant from Atlanta and Charlotte This would out down tho distanco to Atlanta via Sonooa instead of Greenville, but tho fact that tho Illuo Ridgo heretofore was not a Southorn Railway property has pre vented tho making of Sonooa tho main connecting station. Thoro was a rumor in this oity some weeks ago that all trains from Charleston, or rather from Columbia, would go through diroot to Walhalla instead of Greenville, and lt would not bo surprising to railroad poo plo to SOO au announcement to this effect issued. As stated, however, it may bo some timo boforo tho chango can bo made, if, indeed, ono is contemplated. Nows and Courlor, July 20th. " A Good Cough Medicine.
