I ilk Muirs from Inside. IMPOMT.VNT MODIFICATIONS IX TIIK FARMKUS' MOVKMKNT PROQttAM. in viow of thc presoiit stale of af fairs in State politics, tho presence iu tho city yesterday of Capt. G. Wash Shel), of Laurens, Chairman of the State Farmers' Association and signor of the now famous "Manifesto" and call for the March Convention, could not fail to attract sotno atten tion and sot speculation lo work in local political circles. Captain Shell Oiimo up in tho morning and returned on tiie afternoon train. While in thc city, he was in conference, at the office of thc State Alliance Exoil ango, with Manager Donaldson of the Ex change, Chairman Leonard Williams, of tho County Farmers' Association and members of tho delegation to tho March Convention. That dur ing Captain Shell's visit there was a talk in regard to thc March Con vention Avas ascertained from con versations with gentlemen who met him, but further than tba ttlio gen tlemen had nothing to say. Referring lo a statement wdiitdi has been repeatedly made in regard to the original call for the Mandi Convention, Captain Shell stated in the presence of several gentlemen that Hen Tillman positively had nothing to do with tho preparation of that call and thal he knew noth ing beforehand of what it contained. Captain Shell also expressed thc opinion that a majority of the un instructed delegates to tin1 Mareil Convention will vote for nominal ions. Apropos of the coining Farmers' Convention, a reporter for thc Daily News learned yesterday that a letter has been received from Capt. lien Tillman by a gentleman ill the city who had written to him regarding his candidacy for tho governorship, in which Captain Tillman earnestly urged up?n his correspondent iud lo allownis name to bc presented to /th'c convention as a candidate for Governor ami coolaring that he was not a candidate. Captain Tillman went on to stale that bc was con scious that there were other men in the State whose conserv ai ism itself made them much belier qualified bli the place than himself. Ile declared that thc action of thc ICdge ll old con vention in nominating bim had been directly against his wishes and that thc mention of his name by the Laurens mass meeting bad been brought about by Captain Shell en tirely without his knowledge. There have been numerous predic tions as to what thc Mareil Conven tion will do. There is one plan of action which has been talked of in a quiet way among ibo men most prominent in the .March Convention movement and which bas been re ceived with the greatest favor by those wdio have considered it. so much so that it is not altogether guess work to say that the conven tion will, in all probability, adopt il. There are the best ol' reasons lor be lieving that the plan bas received thc sanction of thc'active workers in the convention movement in ilif?or ont sections of the Slate. Informa tion of tho scheme, of which nothing has been said publicly heretofore, comes indirectly, but from a source which stamps it with authority. According to this program. Ihn convention called in Columbia Oil ibo '27th instant will meet, niel, first of all, adopt a strong ami outspoken platform. lt will linn nominate candidates for Governor .uni Lieu tenant Governor. N\> oilier nomi nations will be made, the rest of thc ticket being left blank. A commit tee will then be appointed to plan a campaign, arranging for mass meet ings in all parts ol' t he Slate ; ? ' which the convention's choice for Governor and Lieutenant Governor and candidates foi other Mate ollices who may present themselves will speak. This campaign will be in ad vance of the August convention, of course, and will be willi a view to securing the endorsement ol' the nominees of the March convention by the August convention. It is argued in behalf ol' this plan that it would overcome the strongest objection urged against the nomina tion of a complete ticket hy the March meeting in that instead ol' arraying in opposition the strength of the numerous candidates for po sitions on the State ticked, it would bring to the support of tho Karine rs' Movement platform and nominees the full strength of all tho candi dates for the places left blank on thc ticket. After the departure of Captain Shell from the city yesterday, one of tho Greenville delegation to tito March convention said : "N on can rest assured that lien Tillman will not be tho nominee of thc .March convention, if anybody is nomina ted."- Greenville News, March 20. Tho G reen vi Ho News slates tl mt the paralytic stroke which han KO SC riously affected Col I). K. [Greenville Daily Nowa.] PKNOI.KTOX, March P2.-Tho courteous traveling agent of the inlcr-Stato Building and Loan As sociation, of Columbus, Ga., C. B. Kendricks, reached our town a few days since and with little effort soon organized a local Building and Loan Association with the following ollieers : President, M. M. Hunter; "Secretary and Treasurer, J.J, Sitton; Directors, J. T. Hunter, B. F. Gantt, F. G. Evans, J. J. Sitton and M. M. Hunter; Col. li, W. Simpson, Coun selor. I am creditably informed that sev eral of tho stockholders are contem plating the erection of residences and store rooms, and it is predicted by many that soon Pendleton will be on a big building boom. There are negotiations now in progress with Northern capitalists looking lo the building of a dummy line from Pendleton to Fort Hill and tho building in connection therewith of a palatial hotel at Pendleton on one of tho beautiful sites here. One of our enterprising young men is at the head of thc scheme to build a hotel, and it is believed that his ef forts will be crowned with success, as he is a man of capital and tine busi ness qualifications. Judging from the number of applica 'ons from summer boarders every season which are refused because of insufficient accommodations, in tho face of supe rior advantages Pendleton is sur rounded with on all sides, lhere is every reason to encourage our peo pie to go lo work at once in this di rection and build a hotel on a mod ern style. Fnterpriso is catching. A new hotel built OU a modern style is what Pendleton needs, and she needs il right now. There is no bet ter card for our people to play, hilt il is to bc played at once, or we arc loft and for ?food. Tho agricultural college is soon to bo established III Kori Hill. If our people sleep through their grand opportunity and do md help themselves, we must lake a back scat. There are large hotels progressing in a few miles of us thal have not our facilities to en courage them. Why should wc not grasp their golden opportunities? There is no better evidence of tho prosperity of a place that one can judge from than the business nt its railroad stations. This season thc freight receipts will double that ol' last season and some mouths treble thc same months last year. This speaks well for our town, and il should bc an encouragement for our moiiiod men lo place their capital oui and reap their just reward. Pendleton is in need of a paper. She wants a newspaper and wants it right now, too, I am satisfied our people will encourage such an enter prise liberally. There is no better place in thc Stale to establish a weekly newspaper than at Old Pen dleton. 11er farming interest is be ing watched l>\ the winde Stale and soon will bc looked upon as ibo most progressive portion in South Caro lina in agriculture. There is the material here and we invite a good live newspaper man lo dwell willi us. Work has commenced t both ends of the new dirt road running from Pendleton lo Fort Hill ami will lie ; ushed right through to comple tion. Just as soon as thc road is ivailabic lumber will he hauled and i bridge across Fighleen .Mile creek will be erected thus giving a de lightful drive to Kort Hill. I believe the Scriptures of the old and Now Testaments to be the will ami word of <?od. 1 believe Jesus Christ to be thc Son of God. Tho miracles whieb lie wrought established in my mind His personal authority, sud romler it proper for me to believe whatever Ile asserts; I believe, therefore, nil His d?clarations, ns when Ho dcolnrcs Himself thc Son of God ns when He declares any other proposition? And I declar? there is no other way of salvation than through the merits of His atonement. I believe that things past, present and to come arc all equally present in the mind of the Deity; that with Him there is no succession of time, nor of ideas; that, therefore, thc rel ative terms past, present and future, as used among men, can not, with Strict propriety, be applied lo Deity. I believe in thc doctrines of fore knowledge and predestination, as thus expounded. I do not believe in those doctrihos as imposing any fa tality or necessity of men's actions, or in any way infringing free agency. I believe in the utter inability of any human hoing to work out his own salvation without thc constant aid of the Spirit of all grace. I believe in those great peculiari ties of the Christian religion-a resurrection from the dead and a day of judgment. I believe in the universal Provi dence of God, and leave to Ifipiourus and his more unreasonable billowers in modern times the inconsistency in believing that Cod made a world which he does not take the trouble ol' governing. Although I have great respect for sonic other forms of worship, I be lieve tin' Congregational mode, on the whole, to be preferable lo any other. I believe religion to be a matter not of demonstration, hut of faith. God requires us to give credit to the truths which he reveals, not because we can prove them, but because he declares them. When the mind is reasonably convinced that the Hilde is the word of God, the only remain ing duty is to receive its doctrines with full confidence in their truth and practice them with a pure heart. I believe that the Ibbie is to be understood and believed in thc plain and obvious meaning of its passages; since I cnn not persuade myself that a book intended for the instruc tion and conversion of the whole world should cover its true meaning in such mystery and doubt that none but critics ami philosophers can dis cover il.
