Tho Fnco---A Histor}.?--An Index. livery face a history! Not in teresting, perhaps, but yet telling its story. Our features come to us by inheritance, partly by physical rela tions, largely by mental conditions. It is said that amono the Greeks mothers who were surrounded by the beau tiful, were kept in an atmosphere of thc beautiful in art. Forms of beau ty were on every side-here the eyes rested on a noble countenance in marble, there on visible ideal of a high imagination. What wonder the Greeks as a nation wen' models of beauty. As one regards the countenances about him in every dav life what of history do they reveal. Those faces that show beauty of features and are the exponent of u beautiful (inherit ed) soul within are a delight lo the eye and the heart. All is sweet ac cord between the soul and its outer manifestation. More of history is read in that face which shows eon Hud. Says .lohn liascotn in his sKsthetivs, "As men's career is or should hi' a prolonged resistance, a persistent toil, as crime and obsta, clcs are to bc surmounted, tempta tions lo be overcome, ami dangers to be met, nothing but will can take a linn stand of push, a determined ad vance. So conscious is a mau every moment ol' thc need ol' strength, and, above all, of the strength w hich can say in? to passion, that will is ever felt to be the very frame work of character, and wi' care not il" il occasionally lie on thc surface in massive ribbed strength. Symmet rical ami stalwart virtue is too much to bc often anticipated, and the fee ble appearance of single graces, like thc putting forth of carly (low ers amid frosts and snow, brings pleasure.1' Those faces then which show "massive ribbed strength" are faces with a grand history, faces which beal1 tho imprint of nobly won ?lialtles with hidden evil, laces which may light up into highest beauty. These faces ol' oms (ell sm h tales Upon us. lt may be au imperial countenance but for a sardonic mouth, or loose hung lips, a turu of the eye-some breech in the out ward bravery which gives the trea sonous key to the citadel within. The trail of the serpent is over il all, is thc thought which comes like a blighting wind upon the heart. Hut ev? i w hile wo consider the w ork marred by sins come the glorious hope-the hope given by Christiani ty alone-there is a remedy-lhere is a bloom ol' beauty given lo ( iod lie restores ns to our lost estate, lo Iiis image. Not the least blessed thought which conies of this hope is the be lief that we shall live forever here after in a world of beaut v. I'oor [thwarted, dulled, impotent liva-- ours seem s unetinics. Aspirations alter thc beautiful nogra ti li ed, apprecia tions of it stunned almost by long, continucd offences against it, efforts to produce it falling to thc ground by reason of unskilled lingers - -every where a hallling ol' the endeavors after beauty. Like a soul thirstino for waler in the desert is the de mand for the beautiful the cravinv; for gratification is imperious- it w ill not down at thc bidding of leas.ni, nor is il quieted by logie. Nows comes from Spartanburg of u now cotton plant, which if it is as ola i mci], will make a wonderful revo lution in tho agricultural and cotton oil interests of the nation. T. Fer guson, an experienced cotton planter, claims to have a cotton plant which will produce nothing hut cotton seed without the lint. His statement is briefly as follows : He claims that there is a male and female cotton plant-thc male being designated, he thinks, hy thc red calks. The seeds arc van-colored, the shades being go tl crail)' blue, green and white, and of com se can not bc distinctly specified. Given this fact, Ferguson commenced, some time ago, to pick out thc male plants, and with thc seed extracted from them planted another patch sepa rately. When the crop was ready for picking the male plants were again selected ami thc production of seeds plaided separately again. This process of selecting tin* male plants was kept up until at last the lint re fused to germinate, and nothing is left in the bolls save a large amount ot seed. The amount of seed con tained in tho boll is more than equal to the weight of the lint and seed found in the average sized boll of cotton. Ferguson claims that he can produce four hundred bushels ol seed to the acre by this new dis covery, whore only thirty-five bush els are now gathered with the lint Ho has been very careful in produc ing the results given above-lo ob literate all vest ago of lint from a boll of cotton-and has succeeded in ;i most remarkable manner. Oilier ex perienced planters have been shown Ferguson's now discovery ami an much struck with it. An expert who was shown tin plant and bolls said tho boll has tin. appearance, both on the exterior ami the interior, of a regular boll of col ton after tho lint has been picked out. Thc seed aro a little target (han the common seed ami arc per fectly free from any semblance id lint. Tie- boll? are lilied with thesi seed, which are as numerous as okra ?seed in a pod ?d' okra. The revolu tion that will bo effected by tim now cotton plant, if it can be culti val 'I successfully, will bc beyond calculation. If Ferguson's calcula tions are correel, the colton oil busi ness will bo entirely revolutionized, The planters who now raise cotton aro fortunato if they can make ??U I pounds of lint cotton to the acre, Counting the value of cotton seed al ' *.">(> an acre is considered a big return lo planters in this State. Ferguson claims thal his now colton seed plant will yield at least an acre. Thia amount ho says w ill bo obtained fruin fin? bushels of cotton seed at twenty ?cuts per bushel, that being the present price paid for the raw seed. Tho State agricultural bureau will investigate the matter. balneal hm vs. Protection? Tho movement of men ol' edin a lion ami cull uro away from the party of hi^li tariff ideas as illustrated in the ease of President Flied of Har vard College, who last Saturday in address lo tho Hay State Club, formally declared his entrance into tho D?mocratie party. President Flint's reason for leaving the |{c pnblieau party, as stated by him, is that lu- is not in agreement with the views thal now animate it. lt holds lo the policy of ''protection," but thc protection duties protect capital, ho thinks, and not labor. In tho long run it is a bad policy, ho holds, to protect capital at the expense of tho olas-e- without capital. As respects civil service methods, Presi dent Flint is of tin* opinion that .Mr. Cleveland's record was vastly bettor than that of .Mr. Harrison. "I lave wo noi." he asks, "soon the public service degenerating more : ::,l more, ami in these last series of years worse than all? Have wo not seen t he Democratic administration of ibo pllplic sers iee tho best we over had ?" As a believer in civil service reform I'resilient Flint is compelled to part company with the party he has so long voted with. His seces sion i- mn an isolated occurrence. The selfishness ami greed of the protectionists, who organize trusts lo plumier people who are already la.veil in their interest, is so vast that inuit it udos are everywhere fall ing away from tho high tariff faith. i ',. il i i m i ?ri Sun.
