A New Grain for tko South. [From tho Southern Lumberman.] Tho Hov. II. H. Pratt, of South Carolina, who was for 80 Ul O timo a missionary in South Amerton, has presoutod to tho pub lic a DOW. oereal, which ho oath millomnizo. lt is found in Columbia in largo quantities, oud formes tho common food of tho work ing olasses thcro, and is also used for working animuls. Mr. Pratt has bocu Buooosifully growing it in South Carolina for several years. Tho oakes rando from it, ground into meal, aro preferred to carn meal bread. Tho Savannah Guano Com? pany's chemist pronounces it superior in food qualities to wheat. Kxpcrimonts show that from 50 to 100 bushels of olean seed per nero can bo raised. Mr. Pratt desoribos tho plant os follows: "Tho plant is allied to tho sorgum and Guinna oom families, and sh' '? not bo planted whero there is nay dan of mixing them. Tho grain is smaller and moro mealy than the Guinea oom, tho heads aro larger and moro com pact, and the colo* is milk white instead of rod. It differs from tho sorgum in this, that tho sugar it contains is fully oonvertod into corn when tho gruiu matures-so that tho pith cf the green stalks becomes ns dry and tastclescsB as that of Indian corn wheo tho stalk is dead. In Harunquilln, on tho const, where wc huvo a dry season (which is really a drought,) of fivo or six months' continuance, I have had it planted in my garden and after it hud riponod ooo oropofsecd, 1 havo cut it down to tho roots, in tho midst of this dry Reason, nud had a second crop, of inferior quality of course, to shoot up at oneo from tho roots. I hove been told that u third crop of fully ripened seed can thus bo made from a Bingle plant. I do not know that this ouu imply (for thc soil nt that season cots dry as a potsherd and nearly us hurd,) unless it means that above most other plants this lives off tho atmosphere, which them cer tainly is densely charged with moisture from tho sen. It wus this unlimited oo Iecity to stond drought which induced mo to bring thc seed home, in thc belief that it WOUld bo of incalculable SCl'vicO to our Southern States, when our crops so often fail from drought.
