Ile must riot hold it in contempt if he would succeed in it. It should he the same with thc farmer. But I um sorry to say that he docs always seem to take pride in his chosen .linc of labor that lie would ho warrantable in doing. Ho is quite apt to undervalue him self, or his profession rather. He has fallen into the habit of thinking that tile farmer is quite inferior in point of importance to thc mer chant or thc lawyer. They make their mark in tho community, whilo the farmer remains in com parative obscurity. He goes on in 'he even tenor of his way, from mc year to another, and it would .natter little to thc world whether ie worked or remained idle. It would bc a matter of comment, ind it would affect thc interest ofa argo circle if thc merchant or the lawyor were to do nothing. So the farmer argues that they arc of more importance than he is. Ho is wrong. He underrates himself. The trouble willi him is he has been content for others to -think for him. They have thought, and quite naturally they have put. their own profession in the front, and thc farmer's has been left so far in thc rear that he has settled down to thc conviction that that is where it belongs. It is high time that the farmer began to think for himself. He is abundantly able to do so. Ile should get thc idea out of head that his profession is one of minor importance; for it is riot, and the moro he thinks and acts for himself the more pride he will take in it. Ile will sec that while it may not bc showy in its results as some others are, it is really tho founda tion-stone of national prosperity. When he gets to thinking of it in that way he will begin to realize what injustice he has done himself in thinking for so long that ho was really ol small importance in thc world. The idea of thc true importance of thc profession is growing in thc 'ninds of farmers to-day. They are >eginnjng to think. They are nuking themselves a literature of heir own. They are starting to lo now what tho merchant, and he lawyer, the physician and tho nmister have been doing all along. They begin to realizo that they mist educate themselves to a lighcr standard if they would keep ip with the spirit of progress which haracterizes the agoj and they ..an do that only in ono way; by an ?xchange of ideas with each other, md a systematic, scientific think ng out of tho problem which the arm puts before them. The idea of tho insignificance of heir profession has been tho direct *csult of thought on their part. They havo failed to pcrccivo thc *cal dignity of the position they occupy, because they havo not ried to bring out the elements of strength and beauty which are in it by combined efforts and a wide spread general culture.
