ability of those who lived long
ago. While we have great res
pect for thc old folks, living and
dead, wc must not shut ocr eyes to
the reality. The truth is that peo
ple live longer now thon they ever
did. The m?dica I profession
knows more now than ever it did:
and wc could put into thc field to
day a bigger anny of centenari
ans than our grandfathers eould in
the good old days when t hey were
young.
Moreover, old people now P?O
much more vigorous than thc old
people of timon past. Our people
arc growing larger and stronger.
It is not so very many years since
the American woman was a slight
delicate creature; now silo is
and portly. The numbers of sin
gularly tall and well proportioned
young men and women io boston

astonish thc old fellows who re
member thc boys and girls ot forty
and fifty years ago. ?>omo per

ill size is confined to tho children
of our foreign born citizens: but
this is a great mistake, for thc in
crease growth is general. Cer

have something to do with it, but,
whatever may be I he cause, it is a
fact plainly to be seen by any ob -

Thc greatest known feats of
physical strength and endurance
arc recorded to (he credit of thc
young men of this agc; and, in
deed, it is hardly too much to as
sert that the greatest runners, the
greatest walkers, the greatest
jumpers, the greatest swimmers,
thc greatest oarsmen, thc greatest
weight lifters, the greatest gym
nasts, the greatest boxers, thc
greatest fencers and ihc heaviest,
men that ever lived are among
the living to day. There seems
to bo a universal increase in the
growth of humanity. The height,
the chest measurement and the
weight of the soldiers of thc im
mense armies of Europe of the
present time arc at least as great
us they were among thc picked
men of the much smaller Euro
pean armies of fifty years past,
clearly showing that the average
man ol to day is as big and as
strong as thc picked up man of long
ago.
Thc fact stares us in the face
that tho grown up sons and
daughters of thc old people of
this country are, as a rule, bigger
and stronger than their fathers and
mothers were. An ordinary sized
Englishman finds considerable
difliculty in sqeczing himself into
the armor of one ol' thc Norman
conquerors of this country, but
what could one of our Western
farmers do with it? Certainly he
could pick it up and look at it, but
that is all.
Wc have great respect for the
memory of our grandfathers and
great-grandfathers, as well as for
our grandmothers and great
grandmothers, but we cannot af
ford to delude ourselves witludeas
and notions that facts and figures
sot asido. People are inclined to
overestimate the measure of wis
dom and ability of the grand old
fellows of days gone by. It is an
amiable fault, but still a fault; be
cause the truth is not so.-New
