As moro is learned of this fish, it becomes plainer and plainer that it is dostiuod to bo an exceedingly valuable addition to our sources of food supply. It seems lo possess every qualification that ono could desire very hardy, living on vegetable food, tho cheapest and most easily supplied-thriving in ponds with muddy bottouis, the very kind which requires no labor or trouble to have-growing to imincnso size-in short it appears to bo a thoroughly domesticated lish. Tho following account of it by Prof. Baird will bo found very interesting: "The fish itself is probably of Asinti? origin, and Ins been domesticated in Chiua for thousands of years. It has, however, been so extensively distributed in Kuropc as to have become, in a measure, a nativo fish, occurring in puhlio waters ns woll as in privato enclosures. Tho carp, tis known in Franco oud England, is as stated, an in ferior kind, but in Germany, by a process of careful breeding, several varieties have boon developed. Thus, while tho original stock is covered with largo scales, much in proportion liko thoso of tho Western Buf falo fish, a variety was first dovcloped in whioh many of tho scales had disappeared, leaving hero and there patohes on thc sur fuoo. These aro known as tho Mirror Curp. fttill further breeding produced fish iiaving soaroly any scaloa, only a few scattering hmo and there. These aro tho Leather Carp. Tho tinco vorietics, however, as imported by us, arc all of first class excel lence, and characterized by broad backs, us distinguished from tho sharp buok nod moro bony character of tho common fish. They occupy a conspicuous placo in tho German ihh markets, and bring thc samo price as thc trout, selling generally for about 25 cents per pound. "Its special merit lies in tho fact of its sluggishness and tho case with which it is kept in very limited enclosures, it being u vogotablc feeder, and its general inoffensive* ?less. Whereas, trout und black bass ro quiro a supply of animal food for their sustcnanco and growth, tho carp, while not disdaining flies, worms, larv;e, etc, livo on tho succulent roots and loaves of aquntio plants, their seeds, as they fall into tho water, and other similar substances, and may be fed .very readily upon corn, grain, bread, root crops, raw or boiled, and, in deed, noy vegctubio refuso whatever. Its rate of growth, too, is something marvelous und us observed so far in tho specimens in troduced into tho United States, being even more remarkable here than in i'<uropc. Among thc original fish imported by us from Kuropo, and whioh uro now only about three and a half yeur3 old, nvo some from 25 to 30 ?oohes in length, weighing from four to eight or niuo pounds. Tho fish wo send you oro all of this spring's growth, Romo of thom having made ?even indies siooo they were hatched in May or Juno. "Tho carp spawn in tho Bpriug, in May end June, aud indeed, under somo circum stances, throughout tho cntiro summer. Wo havo young fish that spawned nil tho .woy from May to Soptombor. They oro very prolific, thc female laying from 50, OOO to 500,000 eggs, neoording to her si/.o. Tho eggs adhere tenaciously to whitcvor they touch, and for that reason it ls very important th.it tho new pond should be provided with floating weeds for such at tachment. Tho eggs hatch out in a tow days, and tho young grow very rapidly. Thoy feed voraciously upon tho so-called frog spittle, the green alga scum so common in frog.ponds. Consequently such waters oro especially adapted to cup. Whoucvcr thc water becomes chilled down to perhaps .10?, and especially when frozen over ut the top, tho fish bury themselves ia tho mud, congregating in lots from 50 to 100, fre quently with their tails projecting, and -constituting what is called in Germany kettles or rosen. It is very important that they should not bo disturbed undor such circumstances. Of course, whilo hiberna ting in this way they nro not feoding, although they aro said not to lose apprecia bly in weight. In tho moro Southern regions, whero the waters do not freeze, they will probably feed throughout tho year, und moko a more rapid growth. '.Tho carp will thrive best in artificial or natural ponds with muddy bottoms, and such as abound in vegetation, lu largo ponds it may not bo necessary to givo spo -cial food, but in restricted endo un ci, as, for instance, thoso of r. fraction of au nore, they may bo fed with tho refuso of tho kitchen gordon, loaves of oabbogc, lettueo, leok, cio., hominy or other substances. Grain of any kind is goncrully better boiled boforo being fod to thc fishes, hut this is probably not absolutely neocssary. Wo have our ponds ai rangod so that they cnn bo drawn off at will, leaving all tho fish in tho pond collected in n small basin near tho outlet. This is for tho convonionoo of assorting the fish, nod selecting such ns aro needed lbr Other purposes, lt is n primo necessity that there will bo no prcdaoeous fish in tho same pond with onrp. Of oourso tho largor fish will bo measurably soouro against tho attaoks of tho carnivorous spe cies of about tho same size, but tho eggs and young will become a proy to tho rapac ity of their associates. As a g?noral rule tho lish will thrivo best whon they aro tho though tho association of suckers nod chubs would bo DO less objectionable thoo that of sunfish, perch or black boss. So far, no wntcrs havo proved too warm for thom; indeed, thoy aro said to thrivo espo ciolly weir iu reservoirs receiving tho con densed waters of low pressure steam engines, to Germany, of over 100? tomporaturo. As regards tho best plants for a carp pond, 1 may mention the ordinary ponds weeds, (Pontodcria and Sagittaria), splatter dook, or pond lily, and, indeed, any of tho kinda that grow iu tho water with leaves floating upon tho surfaco, duckweed among tho outnrer.
