Tho fact of an interesting but sad romanoo conncotcd with tho early lifo of tho luto Dr. William A. Muhlonburg has often been hinted nt, but its full details had never before been published until they appeared in tho obituary notice of tho dis tiuguished clergyman and philantropist as publishol in tho Lanoastcr (Pa.) Intelligen cer, Tho ongngeineut of luumago between President James Buchanan-thou a young lawyer of Lancaster--and tho beautiful Miss Ann Coleman, of that placo, Was ter minated by tho 8uioido of tho hapless youti? lady, booauso, it is Buid, her parents objected to thc marriage. A similar attachment existed between hor sister, Miss Sarah ll. Coleman, and Mr. M Uhlenberg, at that time-fifty yours ago-roctor of St. James' ohurch in Lauaustcr. Her father, Hubert Coleman, a proud and wealthy citizen of tho town, also objectod to this marriage, although ho had been mainly instrumental in calling tho young rector to .his charge. His oourso produced an unpleasant feeling in tho church and tho congregation divided into two parties, espousing tho cause of thc rector and tho haughty father respectively. Whilo partisanship was still running high Miss Coleman died-of consumption, as her parents said, but of a broken heart as be lieved by most pcoplo of tho town. . This sad event but intensified thc division in tho church of whioh Mr. Coleman was a leading member, aud on June 19, 1830, Mr, Muhl onborg communicated lo tho vestry his intention to resign on oooouut of roasons whioh it was unnecessary for him to state. A'oommittco of five was oppoinlcd to confer with him with a view to get him to recon sider his determination, but With thanks for their kindness ho declined to do SO in a more lengthy letter, in whieh ho stated that Iiis oourso was taken after duo deliberation and that it was not necessary for him to enter into details reg arding his motives; ho trusted that they wore puro and suoh as ho could think of with complaocnoy "in rcfcrcnco to thc great day of occounts." At tho sumo meeting a communication was received from Mr, Edward Coleman, brother of Miss Sarah Coleman, tho rending of whioh was deferred until a futuro meeting. Oo Juuo 26, 1826, tho vestry reocived tho rnoro peremptory resignation ot their rector, <V?tcd Now York, June 26, and asking that it bo received at onoe. It was ncooptod, and tho wardens wore instructed to draft a reply cxprcssicg thc sorrow of tho church afc his resignation. Afterward, ut Ibo same mooting, tho letter of Edward Coleman, previously laid over was read. It on nounocd to tho vestry thot "in tho event of all connection botweco thc ltcv. Tho offer was sigood by Edward Collo man for himself and tho other heirs of his deceased sister. A committee was appointed to inform Mr. Coleman that such a dissolution of tho connection between Mr. M Uhlenberg and tho church had tiikcu place, and tho trus t?es of tho churoh were rcody to rcceivo tho money. Mr. James Hopkins protested against tho appointment of such committee, and bofofc tho resolution to answer Cole man's letter passed he withdrew from tho mcotiog. At a vestry meeting held Juno, 30, a memorial was presented signed by Sarah Yeates, Margaret Yeates and Cuth crino Yeates, requesting thc vestry to pass ^resolution that Mr. Mulilcnbcrg should mwajs bo invited to preach in St. ?lomos pulpit whonover it was unoccupied.
