No village or town of the State has improved so tnunh since thc war ns Walhalla. In 1 SOO, of tho German Emigrants from Hanover, Germany, which landed at Charleston, a So ciety was formed, which Society purchased 20,000 nores of land for 827,000, nnd in 1851 livo or six families moved up, nnd tho villago wns localed; and gradually Walhalla has grown tobo a piuco of considerable noto, lt has some 2,000 inhabitants, twenty two Stores, three Churches, o new Court House, ono Lutheran College, and ono Female Semi nory. Tho trado of Walhalla extends for a number of miles in oil directions, thero being ? no other place of trade nearer than Greenville, and Franklin, N. C. A number of rich val leys surround, among which aro Jocassee Valley, this side tho mountain, Cashier's Valley in North Carolina, thc Chechen Seo tion, llnbun County, Ga., and many other vnlleys and sections all exceedingly produc tive. Enormous quantities of corn and other graitiP, together with on abundance of apples, nnd almost every article of commerce, nie brought into Walhalla, which make up the trade of the place. At the time of our visit, the business sea son was mainly over, but wc were informed by tho citizens that in tho fall, after gather ing of crops, one continual stream of wagons could be seen passing in, loaded with produce aud returning loaded with supplies und mer chnndise. We must not forget West Union, a village now incorporated distinct, from Walhalla, though lying almost contiguous to it, Midway forming thc two. West Union certainly owes its origin, as n village, lo our former fol low ell ize? of Edgelield, C pt, John P. Mickjgr, than whom none pososscs a more energetic spirit. Such a spirit knows no such luck as fail. Capt M. purchased tho Wost Union place of Col. Gr isbn ni in 1SU9, and moved up his family the sanio year. At that time there were but six families living In the place and no Store; now there ure thirty-nine fam ilies and four stores. "~A'd tho settlers are mostly from the Low country. Among the tijun ber who have left ridgefield and taken up their abode in Walhalla, arc G. M. Var borough and family, who in conjunction with his step son, M. W. Coleman, Esq., pu rebus cd a few years since tho most valuable planta tion around Walhalla for ?0000 j Mr. James M. Abney and Mr. A. P. Coleman have rey cently moved up with their families for tho purpose of educating their children. M?. A. can justly feel proud of his promising t*u?, young duo. lt. Abney, lately a graihygdjof Welford College, who won honors at Ho fl cg? (none greater) and who we predict is destined to win honors of his country. Cape of Good' Hope give accounts of a re markable and sudden flood which has occur red at Victoria West, lt is supposed tu have been caused by tho bursting of a water spout. In the space of two hours thirty houses were washed away and ono hundred lives lost. Thc Hood sec?is to have commenced ut the farm of a Mr. lingo, sonic distance from town. His house, homestead, midstock wore all swept away, bis wife and all his children but one infant (which ho managed to save by swimming with ititi bis arms,) were drowned. Ho describes the scene ns appalling beyond men-Ul rc. First he and his wife heard a sound "?ike iron falling from the sky;" they looked out, anti saw a hugo black mass of cloud R?>' 00 ping along the earth toward I beni; they caught up thc children and rushed from the house, but it was too late, und everything was swept away in the torrent, sive lingo and bis infant ; even their escape was little short of miraculous. --?tr? ? mt* ? - - tlor.v COMPLICATIONS.-A oorrcspondenl from Columbia informs tho Charleston Ale irs that the accounts (d' tho Treasurer and Audi tor of Edgcfiold County are in n precious muddle, and that Mr. Frank Howard, late restaurant keeper in Charleston, has been sent from Columbia to investigate them. Humor hs'th it that several clerical errors, showing faults in addition to a large amount, have already boen found. Friends of the parties, in Columbia, assert that Mic. com pl i cations aro altogether thc result of incompe tency on thc part of one or both of thc par ties to keep noemi nts, such as are required in so complicated n system of collecting and re turning taxes.
