Popper fired upon Vaughan, both' ?of thom being on tho wharf, and within ten .fitcps of each other. Peppor's first shot did ?ot tako effect. Vaughau drew his rovolvcr and fired, striking Poppe in tho sido. Pep per fired ngnin, striking Vaughan also in tho Bide, tho latter returning tho fire with four shots ?onoh of which struck Poppor, who feli und 'almost immediately expired. Vaughan was Chimed off mortally wounded. Thero were 'over ono hundred persons on tho wharf at the time, bat fortunately no one was hurt except ing tho parties immediately engaged in the 'duol.
