Tho Ladies' Association have ? collected for tho purpose over thirty one | ti,oUsaiid dollars, and their efforts arc still unabated and successful. They have snfo, ly calculated upon obtaining fifty thousand dollars. Wo take tho liberty to make them n suggestion. It is, that they induce the State to aid them, and which it can now do is iu a most effective and convenient form.? Whatever bo the style, size or character of the monument which thev mav admit. v * T-? ,vv the base of pedestal of it be of granite? Carolina granite. At Columbia there i? a splendid quarry, near the Itailroud, now worked for the use of the new Capitol in progress of creetion. I f the monument be 100 feet high and a column or colossal statue, such a pedestal would be necessary, and should bo fully DO feet high, and large in proportion. Let the ladies petition the legislature it its next session to direct that at the expenses of the State, this pedestal should bo prepared at Columbia, under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol, by the numerous and skilful masons there employed, according to the design which thev mav ftolect. 10very stone could be tliere fashioncd, sent down by tlio railroad, nnd put up hero. They should then petition the cities and towns of the Stato, to contribute through their corporate authorities a sum sutliuiont B(iy ton or fiftcccu thousand dollars, to procure a bronze statue ofOulhoun to be placed in the proposed recess. Such a monument, composed of granite, bronze and marble, lit types of the man and the memorial, and embodying the stylos of the column, the arch and the statue, would bo worthy of the people of the State and of him to whom they reared it.
